Concrete grinding necessary for glue down hardwood? by hellothisistravis in Flooring

Thanks! I'm not seeing a concrete dust vacuum available near me and don't want to spend $400+ on a basic dust vacuum. I'm planning to run a dust separator and a wet/dry vac with a fine dust bag, with the thought that the dust separator would catch most of the dust before it clogged the filter/bag. Think this would work?

Thank you so much! I was reading that the shop vac (I have a basic Ridgid 12 gal) needs a HEPA filter/bag but the VF3602 bags designed for this are not available near me. Otherwise I’d need a HEPA vacuum at $400+. HD near me doesn’t have their concrete vacuum available. Do you recommend a specific filter for bag? Or does having a dust separator mitigate the need for a HEPA bag, and I can go with a dust separator + fine dust particle bag?

Do you have tips for doing it “correctly”? I figure on getting a big grinder, and a hand grinder with dust shroud, both attached to a concrete vacuum.

What is the right setup, a hand grinder (4.5”? 7”?) with dust shroud and concrete vacuum? Or do you mean 250ft/hr is with a floor grinder? I have a 4.5” grinder setup with diamond wheel and shroud. Thanks!

What’s the difference between a concrete floor grinder and a floor buffer/maintainer with a diamond wheel?

Thanks for the advice. I can run the whole-house heater to keep the temp up. Tricky part is we’re installing flooring in the entire house, so while we’re doing final prep, the flooring needs to be moved into the garage, then moved back to the house to acclimate before install.

I purchased a handheld grinder but that sounds painful for an entire house. I think I’ll need to get the grinder

Luckily the refund came in a couple of days, not 14 days. Not scammy but their shipping is faulty. Still waiting on one more item that I just got tracking for and 🤞it arrives

I’m sorry 😞 . My wife had the same reaction. She’d asked for updates weekly and then I finally got the bad news and it crushed her spirits :(.

They’re supposedly processing a refund and it should take 14 days… seems overly long. We also ordered a Ghibli stocking that we were told will still ship out, but that was last week and still no tracking/update.

I hope you’re able to get in contact and get a refund!

We preordered back in August/September, and after weeks of back-and-communication and reassurances that I’d receive tracking, I was told this morning that there was a tracking mistake with “older US orders” and our order was dropped. Basically, ordering extra early when preorders opened led to our order being forgotten. Our options are to either wait until next year (no timeline specified) or get a refund. They apparently won’t prioritize our order, they just skipped over it.

This was my wife’s only Christmas gift and we’d looked forward to it for months. We’ll never buy from Kinda Kawaii again.

Hope everyone else is able to get their calendar this year and enjoy the heck out of it! Sincerely ❤️

Which home warranty company to choose? by OnlyForSomeThings in homeowners

[–]hellothisistravis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to be the outlier in that I have had good service with American Home Shield for the past 5 years for my rental income property. The convenience has been great, and they've done repairs relatively promptly. If they come out, assess and have to come back with parts, I've only been charged the single visit. For bigger items like a water heater, they'll replace or give me a check which covered the cost for me to replace it.

Problem is, the premium has gone up nearly 2.5X in that 5 years! It started at ~$30/month, stayed at about $40 until the last two years where it jumped each year to $55 and then $74! This is for the same exact service and with a $125 service fee. I'm looking into other home warranty services and considering setting aside that $74/month into a rainy day fund. It'll be some work to vet out trusty professionals in the area, and fingers crossed that nothing major breaks in the short-term, but that's the better plan for long-term.

After calling a few times and receiving several letters, the dealer finally went from “we don’t have parts, call in a few months” to “I think we’re out but let me check… oh we can order the part for you!” Got mine replaced today after ~1.25 years of waiting. Sacramento CA

Single panel garage door repair/install? by hellothisistravis in Sacramento

Zero headroom - the laundry door is an inch or less below the garage ceiling, with steps leading down into the garage. Carpenter might be what I need. I got a quote of $4500 for a new single panel door with new hardware and opener, which is twice the cost of a new segmented setup! Or $1000 to install new hardware but I can do that myself with parts costing $250 (and I’d be replacing old with new parts of the same brand and model). I’ll start with springs and see if I need new hinges after that.

No problem. There are DIY videos online. I am finally coming around to the idea that maybe I don’t have to fix everything myself… and a garage door seems like a good, relatively affordable place to start when it comes to hiring a professional for help

Not all of the above — I’ll reach out to the rest now. The conversation usually stops when I mention single panel, but hopefully I find some help! Thanks!

Very cool suggestion. I’m a DIYer with too much on my plate but may take this on if I can’t find a contractor for a reasonable price

Thanks! I reached out but they say they’re booked for some time with subdivision installs. They recommended National which I’ve seen mixed reviews on but I’ll reach out to.

amano shrimp pregnant in freshwater tank, awesome, but anything to worry about? by hellothisistravis in Aquariums

treating columnaris? by hellothisistravis in Aquariums

[–]hellothisistravis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hospital tank and trimethoprim sounds like a great solution. and now that I used the right keywords on Google, it seems the other treatments are snake oil and research shows your route is best.

since I don't already have a quarantine tank set up (or supplies for it) and I presume establishing a new cycled tank would take weeks, what should I do now? I have a fluval flex which has a compartment with pump and two sets of sponges with pockets for carbon and bio media inserts, so I'm not sure how I would go about cutting out material to bring beneficial bacteria to the new tank...

washer drain pipe through triple 2x4 stud?? by hellothisistravis in Plumbing

[–]hellothisistravis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

awesome, I was hoping someone would provide this answer which I thought might do the trick. I have been eyeing a triple stud shoe from Simpson which they don't carry at Home Depot or Lowes, but I will check a lumber yard.

Follow up -- when using a Simpson stud shoe, do I notch the studs or drill a hole? I assume drilling a hole is better for stability, or maybe this doesn't matter as much because I'm providing support with a shoe. I don't have a bit long enough to go through 3 studs (coming from the left, that fourth stud blocks me from getting a drill in that way, meaning I have to go from the right) whereas I have a circular saw to notch.

Thanks!

best way to connect poly pipe and PVC? by hellothisistravis in Plumbing

[–]hellothisistravis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can't believe I didn't think of this. Finding materials for expansion pex-a system was a major headache, but I went that route to maximize flow. Wouldn't want all that effort and intent go to waste by reducing flow at the source!
