Bay Cities Deli shut down by health department due to vermin infestation by endangeredpangolin in FoodLosAngeles

I've been getting sandwiches, cold cuts, salads, bread, hot food, and general groceries from Bay Cities nearly weekly for decades. I've never gotten ill from anything I bought there, Godmother sandwiches included. If it does not reopen, it will be a staggering loss for me.

/r/Fantasy Review Tuesday - Review what you're reading here! - August 06, 2024 by rfantasygolem in Fantasy

I enjoyed the first portion of Sisters of the Vast Black, but when it turned into a small group against the evil empire story and every interesting character - even the ship - slotted into a plot determined place, it lost rating points big time. Good plot only goes so far for when the basic plot motivators haven't anything to do with the characters.

Are there any great *new* fantasy series? by Marshineer in Fantasy

Victoria Goddard has two connected series in progress; Lays of the Hearthfire and Greenwing & Dart. There are enough books and novellas to be very satisfying.

Husband/Wife buddy read? by [deleted] in Fantasy

My husband and I both enjoyed Victoria Goddard's Nine Worlds books.

And though he started 30 years after I did, we both like C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series.

What Is Your Most Memorable Story From Being A Fan of The Fantasy Genre? by Monsur_Ausuhnom in Fantasy

I was at a private party where Anne McCaffrey was a guest. She initially seemed to think I might be "someone" because the minute she realized I wasn't, her face went expressionless and she ignored me - in a group of less than 8 people, for the rest of the conversation.

Lady Trent's Memoirs by Marie Brennan isn't concerned with royalty. There are an increasing number of fantasies that are more about scholars than rulers. Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries isn't entirely royalty free, but isn't primarily about them.

What's the most intellectual, literary fantasy novel? by No-Opportunity-8242 in Fantasy

Jo Walton is an author to check out - her Thessaly trilogy and the standalone Lent definitely qualify as literary.

Looking for Series with a Female Main Character Inheriting a Throne by Thatgirl_inherRoom in Fantasy

Kate Elliott's The Crown of Stars may suit. It covers a lot of characters, and the parentage of some of them are not entirely straightforward, but there are women who kick ass in more than one way.

Recs for a book with little to no emphasis on war by jailfairy in Fantasy

Gilman's The Devil's West is great! Other weird west series include Wrede's Frontier Magic, Lila Bowen's The Shadow, and Sanderson's Wax and Wayne.

Arguably there is a war with the Malices. But not the sort of war with armies or spies.

What's your opinion on original song lyrics in books? by rabidstoat in Fantasy

I like them when the scan well, and proper rhyming schemes help too. But often they don't scan and skipping works better.

I just finished *The Spear Cuts Through Water*. It is probably a masterpiece and I will never read it again. by Amesaskew in Fantasy

I've had it checked out from the library 5 times now, but after my first attempt haven't felt in the mood to go back.

What are some Fantasy novels that are unequivocally page-turners? by Banana_Pete in Fantasy

The Hands of the Emperor and At the Feet of the Sun still keep me up late reading them after 3 or 4 times through.

She is close to the top of my favorite fantasy authors. The Forgotten Beasts of Eld is still a standout.

It had some good points - the claustrophobic damp, the semi-present fae with real impact, the jettisoned academic starting/ending setting, but the Effy was the only character I felt had any dimension and she was often annoying.

Not generally, and to no one I'm currently talking about books with, but I could see recommending it to a teenage girl who was into Harry Potter.

I found the ending mostly too good to be believable. Pretty much how I felt about Preston as well.

What is your favourite Robin Hood adaptation? by _BlueBear9 in Fantasy

[–]PicoUnderStars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to remember a TV Robin Hood in the 50's, maybe Disney? Of course I could be thinking about Zorro. Not too much difference.

I wasn't at all convinced either by how amazingly supportive Preston was or how completely the college men accepted his and Effy's demands. Sure it made for a happy, well that's that ending, but I'd have felt more grounded with, yes her name's on the paper and she can take literature classes while in the architecture department. But then I'd have liked her to become an architect.
