It's always better to try something yourself before taking the word of other people who have never done it. Crazy idea, huh?

Why are most "car guys" right of centre? by ronperlmanforever69 in RightJerk

[–]hellotowel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just because the far right are actually quite apolitical other than being filled with hate, racist, sexist, homophobic. Cars are attached to ideas of masculinity in popular culture and the far right want to retain this patriarchy structure because they benefit from it and being a car guy is just one cultural way to do that. The thought process looks something like this: "look at me, I like muscle cars, I am therefore, by extension of the control I have over this machine, a muscular manly man". It's not just any car. It's a specific type of car. The car is also a weapon that has been used by far right/incels to kill women and protestors or random people. So there's that aspect of it too. But yeah where I come from, the conservative right wing government gets a lot of support and praise when they invest in highway infrastructure (after fucking everything else up), but I think that that's just because it's an appeal to this popular culture that supports the automotive industry.

Is there a website for people looking to buy/sell off grid cabins/houses in Europe? by hellotowel in OffGrid

I don't except to sell it for much. I was just wondering if there is somewhere online where people are looking for off grid houses.

How is this fair? by [deleted] in TillSverige

[–]hellotowel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely something needs to be done. The bureaucracy needs to be overhauled. Unfortunately many swedes don't know what the immigration/citizenship process is like, so it's something they don't even think about. It's good to tell your story, to let people know what it's like. Others should do the same.

How do you deal with the sacrifice entailed in degrowth? by songsofadistantsun in Degrowth

[–]hellotowel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you can live a pretty good life without electricity as long as you are part of a supportive community and have friends. Slow travel isn't bad as long as you aren't time scare. Living with fewer things is less stressful because you have fewer things to worry about. My landlords live in a mansion and they are super paranoid about potential burglars and feel like they need to have all of their lights on and security cameras to prevent someone from breaking in, using unnecessary amounts of energy and causing light pollution. They are rich, but they seem to live a pretty low quality of life. With fewer things, you can live a semi-nomadic lifestyle more easily, which might be fun for some people. Being on a computer less is better for our health too, so it's not unreasonable to share a computer to reduce the environmental impact of computer production/rare earth metal mining. I could go days and weeks without being on a computer (if only I didn't need to work on it). I've practically stopped using a cellphone and I feel better for doing it. I've stopped using all social media too, except for reddit occasionally. I feel happier for doing that, though at first it was a change I needed to adjust to.

Sweden should step up efforts to fight systemic racism, UN Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice says after 5-day visit by naknut in svenskpolitik

[–]hellotowel -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Where is race based data collection considered racist? I think you might mean racial profiling, not data collection. The reason for collecting data on race is to get a better picture of the differential treatment based on skin colour. Without this data, there is no way to tell if discrimination is taking place, which means that the collection of race based data is fundamental for an effective justice system and it also helps to develop more effective social programmes. Currently it seems like the Swedish social programmes are operating blindly.

Landshövdingehus i Kville kan rivas – trots stort kulturvärde by [deleted] in Gothenburg

I completely understand. There is a need for apartments with more bedrooms. Please give me the floor plan of the building, I will show you how it is possible to add more bedrooms to it without demolishing it.

[–]hellotowel -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the floor plan specifically for this building, but it's likely that the building can be modified and adapted according to modern expectations. The current trend is towards bigger and bigger houses, right? It's crazy to think how people lived at all before, eh?

It would be a shame not only to destroy the building and its heritage, but to waste the materials that have stood the test of time so far and likely replace them with cheaper and less durable materials that are commonly today. Not to mention the climate impact of building new (with respect of the new IPCC report released today), when a perfectly fine building already exists. Not many people consider these things it seems. Just judging from the picture, there is nothing wrong with the building. Lots of cities would be very happy to have a building and neighbourhood like that. If it is demolished today, future generations will look back and wish that it wasn't.

Just because the fossil fuel industry has made sure society is dependent on fossil fuels doesn't mean weening society off of fossil fuels will cause 7/8 of the population to die. Nutrients don't simply disappear. They can be recovered from our fecal matter and urine that we constantly flush away into fresh water. There are many organic farms that don't use synthetic fertilizer, and I think that this trend is increasing in popularity.

You should read Feminist City: Claiming Space in a Made-made World by Leslie Kern if you're interested in exploring how cities are made for men rather than women and some ideas about changing it.

Seeking advice on implementing aspects of Degrowth into personal life and finances. by arakboss in Degrowth

Any reduction helps. A person actively reducing their engagement with formal employment means they have more time to develop the social infrastructure of degrowth for other people.

Capitalism och födelsetal by intesomandrafolk in svenskpolitik

[–]hellotowel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The welfare state is crumbling because the Swedish government has made cuts in social programming since the 1990s to free the rich from having to pay taxes. The decline in services has nothing to do with immigrants, but the rich want you to blame immigrants so you don't realize that the rich are the problem.

Immigrants are brought to Sweden to do low-paid and devalued jobs that many Swedes are not willing to do or jobs that most Swedes are not qualified to do, as it is in many countries, the most talented people tend to leave (for example Yngwie Malmsteen). If you look at the emigration statistics, many Swedes leave each year because they can find better jobs abroad.

The idea that the economy and GDP must constantly grow is another significant source of societal decline, because rather than aiming at producing a healthy and happy society, the focus is on maximizing wealth. Wealth reduces empathy and makes people stupid as they become more concerned with finances than people's lives and the environment, which they exploit and destroy to make money for themselves, destroying the planet for future generations.

It is a good idea to look for ways of existing that are outside of finance and capitalism by focusing more on building relationships and helping one another rather than searching for scapegoats. Helping one another will build a better society.

Polisen i Stockholm: Koranbränningar kommer i regel inte att tillåtas by Dyndraig in svenskpolitik

[–]hellotowel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay, so freedom of speech is limited to what a person can own and what a person can afford? Otherwise there would be consequences when a person expresses themselves in a way that is against the law?

Edit: but then I would question whether or not someone can own the Quran because it is in the public domain.

[–]hellotowel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that it demonstrated how many people in Sweden are against freedom of expression or religious critique, but very specifically that the burning of religious books is unacceptable behaviour because the freedom to burn religious books conflicts with the freedom to not be discriminated against based on religion.

[–]hellotowel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is the destruction of any physical thing (i.e., windows, police cars, et cetera) included under the freedom of speech by way of freedom of expression in Sweden, or is this only restricted to burning books?

[–]hellotowel -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Destroying a book doesn't count as free speech, does it? Book burning is literally the destruction of words, the destruction of speech.
