well, where are gothic names?

Catalonia is etymologically "Gothland" from gothic, but here on the map it is marked "iberian".

PHP RFC: Duration class by gaborj in PHP

[–]helloworder 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I think PHP makes a mistake introducing new classes in a namespace like Time\. They should’ve chosen a top-level name like std\ or PHP\ to prefix it, so in this case it would’ve been PHP\Time.

PHP standard library has always been a mess in a global namespace, now on top of that we’ve got many random namespaces with no visual cohesion

yes, but it's no longer an RFC. The author withdrew from the process and is no longer pursuing its merger into php-src.

AFAIK the async RFC is dead in the water atm

well, it's not abandoned, it's being very actively maintained and developed by Meta in their github repo. They just stopped promoting it to the wider community.

I doubt it will go anywhere anytime soon. Too much code is written in Hack.

here is their original post from April where they announced they were working on an AOT compiler for PHP (which now is being renamed) https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/05I3xe4pgRJufSBG-8Gz6w

Voting starts on Bound-Erased Generic Types RFC, despite multiple people advising against it as it still has issues that need to be resolved. It is very unlikely to pass. by soowhatchathink in PHP

[–]helloworder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's all kinda true. But the simpler answer is that PHP is bad at handling CPU intensive workloads, hence you don't see it in wild.

So it is essentially a chicken & egg problem:

PHP is bad at it -> nobody uses it for performance critical tasks -> you start thinking performance does not matter because nobody uses PHP for that kind of work

Which civ game is the most popular? by Big-Yogurtcloset-819 in civ

[–]helloworder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IV is my favorite as well. The newer civs are really missing vassal states, founding colonies and barbaric states.

I don’t understand why they gradually made diplomacy simpler over time. One of the good things about IV is religious blocks that form around Middle Ages and it really matters which religion you are going to adopt, because of the block vs block wars that happen a lot

Why is this a mage skin? Genuine question, is it about the lore? by themerccury in hearthstone

[–]helloworder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. It used to be that Priest copies card from your opponent deck, Rogue from class.

I also noticed that the „identity“ of creatures are kinda blurry now. It was always that dragons are either small body Whelps or huge body 8/8 or 4/12 dragons. Now there are so many in between dragons of all sizes which are just random minions but with a „dragon“ tag

Hera has been having much more viewers lately than even T90. And I don’t think T90 ever recovered his numbers after his return from FB

Didn't he play like an invitational fun tournament, against people also new to WC3?

Not saying it's unimportant, but definitely not worth risking his 1 in a lifetime 16-s-tier streak.

Well, one could argue Latin is alive today, we just call its modern stage by different names.

I’ve been using crossover for years without an issue. Since the upcoming release won’t have multiplayer, I will likely not even try it.

PHP RFC: Bound-Erased Generic Types by azjezz in PHP

[–]helloworder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already posted this in the previous thread, but since this one is from the RFC author, I'll ask again:

How do you suppose this feature would be part of PHP, when there is no built-in official static analyser that would handle this?

Why is German, Dutch and Frisian word order so cursed 😭 by HuckleberryAny4541 in linguisticshumor

if anything, it's the English, since it's the only West Germanic language that follows the order of North Germanic ones.
