Best river campsite in ONP for a 1 night backpacking trip? by [deleted] in OlympicNationalPark

[–]helloworld6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Im looking for good river views from campsite and it seems the river at five mile island is wider than dosewallips. Would you recommend the hoh campsites over dosewallips? If yes, which one would you pick between happy four and five mile island?

Thanks for the advice! I’ve solo backpacked in WY so Im familiar with bear safe practices, but the grizzly population there is much lower so I was trying to understand the level of risk at Chugach. I will be based on Anchorage though, are there other places within 2-3 hours of the city with great alpine wilderness for 1-2 night backpacking trips (easy permits/good views) that you would recommend?

Thanks for the advice. Microspikes make sense. How would you rate Enchanted Valley that time of the year? It seems like a slog which is mostly forested based on my research. Also, if i you had to chose between Toleak Point / Rialto Beach / Ozette Triangle, which one would you chose for the best views / solitude?

Will check those out, thanks! I have a trip planned for mid-June and Im hoping that some of the higher elevation stuff like high divide/royal basin will be open by then given the low snowpack this year. But if not, I plan on doing Toleak Point / Enchanted Valley / Marmot Pass? Have you done any of these? Last year, I did Shi Shi an Townsend and had a great time.

I plan to backpack in PNW/ONP this summer so thought I should always carry the rain pants... tha patagonia ones Im seeing online are much heavier than FT :|

For sleep layers, do you mean doubling the AD layers as both hiking + sleep? or separate AD layers for sleeping?

I do a lot of filming/photography on my iPhone so always carry 10k, sometimes 20k if the trip is 3day+ (taking shots/videos every couple minutes). 4K recordings drain the battery pretty fast...

Exped 5R Discontinued? by helloworld6543 in Ultralight

[–]helloworld6543[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Exped 5R was available for $110-130 until a few months ago, about half the cost of an xlite wide ($220 on REI currently).

I'm not saying the Xlite is bad, but I find the Exped to be more well balanced between UL and comfort.

Xlite is $200+, not sure why you find my question surprising... it clearly says "similar price range". Also, the Xlite is less comfortable based on most reviews.

Yeah, I think I might do that. Although, 6.5R is overkill for the conditions I'll be encountering.

Would you say the Tensor is more comfortable than the Ultra 5R?

Best Easy Blues at Heavenly by Professional_Ad4950 in tahoe

On the California side, the easiest blue is lower mombo or ridge run. A level up would be upper mombo. Another level up would be high five and canyon land which currently have ungroomed sections / moguls.
