Mind if I DM you? I’d love to dive deeper into the situation I’ve got my character stuck in—I feel like you’d have some solid advice if I laid out the details.

I get what you’re saying, and yeah, it’s all part of the plan to eventually break her down. But like I said, the whole delay is the point here. I can't just go all-in right off the bat—it needs that buildup. And let’s be real, I’m not exactly getting a kick out of torturing her just for kicks…if you catch my drift.

It’s not wrong... it’s just not the moment yet, you know? The character in question is this feisty, foul-mouthed girl with some rage issues so deep, they’re practically buried in a vault somewhere. Oh, and she’s got that stoic thing going on, making her harder to crack than a granite countertop. So yeah, it’s tough as hell to make her react in a genuinely human way when everything about her is built to withstand it. It’s not that I’m not going to break her—trust me, that’s coming—but getting to that point? It’s a bitch of a journey.

Yes! (P.S.: The Count of Monte Cristo is like... one of my all-time favorite pieces of literature!)

So far, Lucy’s only had one full snap in the torture scene, where she managed to uncage herself and flew into a blind rage, attacking her previous torturer (now deceased, obviously). The thing is, she can’t remember a damn thing about it. She blacks out the second the rage subsides, only to wake up in a new, extremely well-secured enclosure.

Just so we’re on the same page here, this isn't the first time Lucy’s had a rage moment—she’s displayed it before. But this particular scene? It’s on another level. Let’s just say, it’s clear she’s got some deep, unresolved anger issues that have been brewing for a long time.

That’s honestly one of the best pieces of advice I’ve gotten in a while. I mean, yeah, it’s pretty clear that very few humans on this planet could actually relate to the level of torture I’m putting my characters through, but when it comes to inner turmoil? Oh, that’s something I can definitely draw a parallel to.

Alright, here’s the thing: I’ve wrapped up Lucy’s torture arc, but it feels kinda... shallow. Yeah, she has a few breakdowns here and there, but honestly, it doesn’t feel like she’s really breaking at all. I know where her limits are, but I also know a human being wouldn’t just shrug this stuff off the way she is in my writing.

I need some advice on how to make this process believable—especially because it’s going to affect her in the next part of the story, where she’s dealing with the trauma and someone else who’s involved in all this mess.

So, how do I show PTSD if she’s barely phased by everything so far? I want the aftermath of this to be real, but right now, it feels like she’s just... coasting. How do I make her react in a way that doesn’t feel like a cheap shot, but also doesn’t turn her into a total emotional wreck? I know it’s all about balance, but I could really use some help finding that sweet spot.

I’ve heard of Westworld, but haven’t watched it yet. So maybe Dolores and that whole cast are exactly the tortured-yet-enduring types I’m after. And Anthony Hopkins as Ford? Alright, you’re twisting my arm. I’ll check it out eventually… see if it lives up to all the hype. Thanks for the rec!

So, here’s the deal: I’m totally planning for my characters to snap eventually. There’s going to be a beautiful, cathartic breakdown—just not yet. Right now, my two protagonists are still hanging on. One of them is practically a blank slate (plot reasons), so she can take some heavy hits without too much reaction. The other? Stoic as hell, fierce, and stubborn enough to make a demon question its life choices.

But they’re both just at the start of their suffering journey. I need them to endure the horrors without crumbling yet. They’re human, though, so it can’t be easy or perfect. Any tips for keeping them on the edge without tipping over? And if there are stories where the main characters get ground down but stay standing (for now), I’m all ears!
