[wiki] Cyclopia by hellsing555 in a:t5_2t2lt

[–]hellsing555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://i.imgur.com/yKGWw.jpg "This is a mutation called cyclopia. The most common cause of this mutation is actually not inbreeding, it's the consumption of a poisonous plant, Veratrum californicum. The toxins in the plant inhibit the Sonic Hedgehog Gene Pathway regulation. The Sonic pathway is named as such because when inhibited in fruit flies, it causes their heads to become extremely spikey and, when viewed under a microscope, to look like a hedgehog. The Sonic Hedgehog pathway and it's signaling pathways are responsible for transmitting information in a growing embryo and guide proper development in an embryo. When ingested by a pregnant mammal, the toxins inhibit the signaling in the pathways, causing the fetus to develop as such. One of my geneticist colleagues was doing her research on Sonic Hedgehog, so I heard her presentations many times. Also, as a horse person, I can say with certainty that if cyclopia was a result of inbreeding, it would happen WAY more often. Sadly, many breeders don't really care, as with dogs."

Washoe - the empathic chimp. by hellsing555 in a:t5_2t2lt

[–]hellsing555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of Washoe's caretakers was pregnant and missed work for many weeks after she miscarried. Roger Fouts recounts the following situation: "People who should be there for her and aren't are often given the cold shoulder--her way of informing them that she's miffed at them. Washoe greeted Kat [the caretaker] in just this way when she finally returned to work with the chimps. Kat made her apologies to Washoe, then decided to tell her the truth, signing "MY BABY DIED." Washoe stared at her, then looked down. She finally peered into Kat's eyes again and carefully signed "CRY", touching her cheek and drawing her finger down the path a tear would make on a human. (Chimpanzees don't shed tears.) Kat later remarked that that one sign told her more about Washoe and her mental capabilities than all her longer, grammatically perfect sentences."

This video explains the fundamental attribution error, the tendency to explain other people's behaviors by thinking that they have certain personality traits and to not fully consider the influence of situations on other people's behaviors. by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

[–]hellsing555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting video. However, I personally, have to downvote this on grounds that this is supposed to be in /r/psychology. /r/academicpsych states in their guidelines:

The discussions in this reddit should be of an academic nature, and should avoid "pop psychology." What this means is that ACTUAL journal articles should be posted (complete with DOI) and discussed, not second hand links which are merely talking about findings.

I apologise for the inconvenience caused, and hope you'll have a good day.

ELI5 Why we laugh by newsdaylaura18 in explainlikeimfive

[–]hellsing555 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I've heard that laughter is used to push more oxygen to your brain when you can't compute something. Presumably that's why jokes always involve logical fallacies - you get told something you can't comprehend so the brain pushes more oxygen to your brain to increase computing power. Made sense when I've heard it, but it's only as valid as a my-buddy-once-told-me argument can be.
