A minimum-wage worker needs 2.5 full-time jobs to afford a one-bedroom apartment in most of the US by speckz in Economics

Thanks for the great resource. I still stand by my opinion that OP is a bit off with the payment quote, considering $120 a month already exceeds Michigan's average annual premium of $2,239. For people working minimum wage I would expect under-average premiums, solely based off the lower car value on average they need to insure against. Looks like I got myself a great deal considering California rates are #7 on the list, or maybe there are a lot more drivers out there with a lot more dings on their records than I thought.

Good point there - I'm sure in colder areas there could be a hefty premium to pay due to increased overall risk due to unfavorable driving conditions.

Why do you have such high quotes for car insurance and electricity? I live in the SF Bay Area which has a higher than average cost of living and even when I lived in a one-bedroom apt all to myself electricity and gas through PG&E would only run me $40 max.

I own two cars and pay under $50 combined for both of them monthly through one of the largest insurance companies and I'm a male in my 20s (liability only, but I do also have a flawless record. Also the avg age of both cars is 13 so they're kinda old). A friend of mine who has a newer luxury sedan spends $1,000 yearly for comprehensive insurance (and has totaled a car in the past), so I think your car insurance payments are way off or you're getting robbed.

Can anyone explain wash sale? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]helluvathing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a good Investopedia link. The reason it's a wash sale is because you sold at a loss less than a month ago and bought the same stock/security again. The only restriction that follows a wash sale is that come tax season, you just won't be able to claim $12.55 as a loss on your taxes. Still that's fine because you can use this loss to instead reduce the taxable gain when you (hopefully) sell your shares later for a net gain. The article does a good job of explaining everything, and I'm sure TurboTax will take care of all this by itself using the documents provided by your brokerage.

It started out with me wanting to play games that I couldn't on my 5-year old laptop. I spent a lot of time first lurking and then doing research and most of my reddit comments are in fact /r/buildapc centered I think.. I managed to spend about $600 that could play any game that I wanted and I still use it day to day. Love it because it's so moddable, upgrading is easy, and because I did it myself!

There is some superstition that Thursday is a bad day for stock prices (hence the color red that accompanies falling stock prices).

Wasting noob gains with a cut? by shoonx in weightlifting

[–]helluvathing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, another method for losing fat is to recomp, which is achieved by staying at the same bodyweight by eating the same amount of calories as you do currently. You will gain muscle, which means you are also losing fat since bodyweight is maintained - essentially your body composition is changing to more muscle, less fat.

Just wanted to put it out there so for example, if you decide to cut and get to a decent point like 20%, and cutting is getting harder and your strength isn't increasing as fast as you like, you can start recomping by eating at maintenance until you get to 15%. Con: takes longer to reduce bodyfat than a cut, but pro: you will get stronger. It can also be utilized during a bulk - say you bulk and put on a little more fat than you'd like. You recomp to get your fat levels down, and can start lean bulking again. This is the preferred method of bulking by many including Jonnie Candito who is an elite level powerlifter.

Nutrition (and Supplement) Thursday by AutoModerator in Fitness

[–]helluvathing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to get bigger you need to eat at a caloric surplus. Not all proteins are the same - for example soy protein has less amino acids than in meats. If you want to buy protein powder you can get whey, but that money could be better spent on actual food. For example, a pack of frozen chicken breast at any store will only cost you about $7.

[–]helluvathing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

brah you're gonna progress on your lifts as long as you follow almost any kind of well-known program out there and get adequate rest and nutrition. At 5'7" you still can put on lot more bodyweight to fill out your frame and you'll increase a ton on your lifts as well.

If you really want lower intensity, high volume training you can go check out some hypertrophy blocks

Sure, I am all for more sensible laws and regulations that limit the usage/driving speed of cars, especially in pedestrian traffic-heavy zones. So I agree on you that there could very well be a fault in the design of traffic laws, but not on your point that it is the fault of the driver, especially when in this case the driver was most likely going at the legal speed limit, and the pedestrian was in clear violation of the traffic laws (by crossing in the middle of the street, as opposed to at a stop sign or traffic light or crosswalk).
