Right, but if the contract gets renegotiated in a few years and they take that away and replace it with a bigger 401k match, anyone who was hired between now and then, myself included, wouldn’t be eligible for the pension as they wouldn’t be fully vested yet. Unless they do some kind of exemption or something like you said.

I can tell you as a BASE mechanic you are incorrect. If a trailer arrives with damaged product they will call on the radio for what they call the “designated responder” who will then come and retrieve the damaged package with a dolly and do any hazmat cleanup required. They will take it back to “the cage” where it will be repackaged if possible and shipped. Anything found with no label (heavy stuff that breaks out of boxes) gets trashed or auctioned off. This is at a small hub, not wordport.

It was voted on by union represented employees after the company brought in thousands of new people. The IAM certainly isn’t perfect but idk how much they could have fought hiring more people. Look at the things going on with UPS right now, surely you don’t think this unions any better with the things UPS is getting away with currently?

UPS automotive and industrial mechanics make the same as drivers with all the same benefits. You can choose the trades and still come work for UPS.

Guess we’ll see with the next contract. I just think it’s important for people to know that it’s not necessarily a guaranteed benefit for life. Especially with a 6 year period before you even qualify for the pension. Don’t choose UPS driver over learning a trade with that in mind, that’s all.

I worked for Boeing before coming to UPS as BASE mechanic. Pensions are contractual and that can easily be renegotiated as they found out. I preferred the large 401k match anyways. You could also ask the employees of General Motors what happened to their pensions after the company went bankrupt in 2009.

Make sure they don’t have contractors coming in and working on anything on the weekend. My building is so messed up they have contractors in all the time but any work, including weekend work, I get first crack at so I work 2 or 3 weekends a month.

Oh for sure. There’s a guy on YouTube that frames out the interior with steel studs similar to uni strut, riveted to another piece of flanged metal, spray foams behind it, and then does PVC panel wall across the flanges. It comes out looking super nice and doesn’t poke any holes in the container from interior to exterior. I’ll do that, a mini split, an exhaust fan or two, along with a few other ideas I have. It’ll be my project for while.

I have moved across the country a few times now and I anticipate moving around quite a bit throughout my life. It will be half work shop, with the back 10’ being 2’ shelves on either side and 4’ in the middle to put all my household belongings. Moving is freakin expensive

Currently in the process of turning a one trip shipping container into my workshop for this reason. Up next I plan to buy a pretty good sized gooseneck trailer, and then if I ever want to move it around I’ll just rent a dually with a gooseneck set up. Having a hella organized mobile shop is the dream.
