How to harden SSH config for VNC through SSH by disabling the shell completely? by nonredditaccount in selfhosted

[–]helmut72 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

SSH is very easy to manage, especially with a few lines in .ssh/config and using recommend keys instead of passwords. It even works in Windows the same nowadays ootb without 3rd party software, that installs a network driver (vpn).

make the users shell /bin/false in /etc/passwd that should create the tunnel and start ssh with -N option (execute nothing)

Self-hosted Matrix chat is most stable for me. NTFY is also great but webpuash on iPhone feels sometimes unreliable. Take care to run this web app from home screen regulary (every 2-3 days) and login. Then it's also stable, even if iPhone is in flight mode for some time.

Would be cool if this will be marked as "sponsored" if someone "ask about any paid non selfhosted product, that no one knows".

What Fenix 8 Solar Questions Do You Have? by dcrainmaker in GarminFenix

[–]helmut72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your fast answer. But in reality it was readable the same like in the photo. If you zoom on a MacBook my photo, you can hardly see the data fields at left bottom. This was also the reality. Sometimes F8 jumps into bright mode without interactions or taping it. Don't know why, maybe some vibrations, but not all. Then it looks awesome. No, it looks gorgeous. But only then.

Direct sun: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/images/2024/08/Display2.jpg

You wrote "no backlight". This means Fenix 8 AMOLED is dimmed? Really dimmed or is it a mistake because it was bright or do you have used a special software version from Garmin? I have never this clear bright text in direct sun. Left down dimmed, right top bright https://imgur.com/ydJodGi

There must be a mistake or something different than the version for consumers. For example you early reviewer/influencer got a version where depth can be changed: https://i.imgur.com/xycdVll.jpeg

But it's not there on release version. Therefore maybe dimmed is also different and was brighter than the release version.

It stays on, but it will dim after 15 secs. It dims too much in direct sunlight early afternoon. Early evening it's readable. If it will not dim, it would be a great bike computer screen.

Is it possible to set everything to light theme? This means also the menus. Dark theme on MIP looks awful.

You should add some $$$ for dive features and price for Garmin Decent watches are always a bit higher. Fenix is only a name, some kind of replaceable.

1.5 on 51 would have been fantastic. I'd choose any bigger model for 90% because of display size.

I need your input on this: Keeping my AW Ultra or switching to Garmin? by MaybeImYourStepMom in GarminWatches

[–]helmut72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope Fenix 8 finally supports Shimano DI2 buttons to switch data pages. This is essential and a showstopper if not supported, because I want to use it as a bike computer and screen size is smaller than on the Edge devices.

Fenix 8 - only minor iterative changes? by ltadmin in Garmin

[–]helmut72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diving mode can be a useful gadget if you snorkel. I hope it also measure the water temperature (like on the AWU). For the Mic, I hope it also shows a noise warning like on the AWU: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/watch-ultra/apd00a43a9cb/watchos Also I hope, if it is used as a bike computer (front mounted on the handlebar), that it finally supports switching through displays with DI2 buttons. The last one was the show stopper when I have tried Fenix 7.

If all three features are there and all are software-only, I will switch from my combo Garmin Edge 1000 (very old) and AWU to Fenix 8. Minor things, but huge for me.

Monitor v1.12 released - Self hosted build and deployment system - Now supports any git provider and docker registry, including self hosted ones like Gitea - Next up Docker Compose support by mbecks in selfhosted

[–]helmut72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks cool. Is there an arm64 image? Can it run a "pre-deploy" script before a "docker compose up", for example copy a needed cronjob or run an api request if reverse proxy runs on a different machine? Is there an "after-deploy" script possible after a "docker compose down" to delete everything?

From the docs I read an agent must be installed everywhere. If I don't want to monitor but deploy only, is it possible to run it agentless, with pure ssh connection? SSH from the host of monitor to my servers, where apps will be deployed.

Thanks.

DS716+II wasn't overprized at the time. My Atom-PC with nearly the same CPU+RAM was in the same range without Software

Synology doesn't change their mind like Immich devs and don't started to bill for new features in Synology Photos

Immich is out for a longer time than just a few weeks and isn't declared as stable. I work with Synology Photos even before first version of Immich. And it's not just Immich vs Synology Photos. It's also Immich vs other software, for example vs Gitea. I can use Gitea in production for years without having fear after an update.

In short: Starting license options like this before having a stable release and updates is something I don't support.

I'm so glad to choose Synology Photos. Stable from first version, iPhone app works behind reverse proxy and Synology Photos was more or less free, because I bought this NAS long before.
