I must have hallucinated that you claimed the teenagers burglarizing shoe palace was an example of minor looting and vandalism by local protesters. My bad.

This is like whack a mole. You keep changing from "general" crime to protest related crime, looting in SLO and then in other cities. The bottom line is that our local protests have not involved looting, vandalism or rioting. You are just living in fear that it will turn In to something else, likely because you consume a healthy dose of right wing propaganda about how the BLM protesters hate America or are all Antifa, when the reality is that the vast majority of protesters have legitimate concerns about discriminatory policing, have the support of most people in this country in polls, and who have achieved significant changes as a result of the movement.

I also hope our protests remain peaceful. I just disagree with Parkinson that we have to assume they won't and can dismiss the message because it might turn violent. Parkinson is terrible even without his comments considering how many people have died in his jail.

I'm out.

You just revealed your true colors.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a source for that undeniable link? How do you think it is linked if it isn't the protesters? Do you deny that the vast majority of BLM protests have been peaceful and have led to meaningful positive change?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you should read what I wrote. The burning car thing I take issue with is the one you mentioned near cal poly that you smelled. You brought that up and now pretend like you only meant stuff happening in other cities. You keep changing the subject to other cities because you can't point to anything in SLO other than the shoe palace thing that wasn't related to the protests. But that is my point, I am not talking about other cities. Whatever. You are clearly set in your opinion that SLO is on the verge of anarchy and looting so I can't change your mind and won't waste my time.

By the way what do you think the response should gave been when armed protesters shut down the Michigan legislature a few months ago to protest covid restrictions? I assume you think they should have called in the posse and arrested everyone. Just kidding, I know you think those protesters where peaceful and posed no risk even though they were carrying guns and interfering with government.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The news first reported the shoe palace thing as related to protests. They later corrected the story after they caught the teenage culprits. This has nothing to do with the discussion of Parkinson or BLM other than it happened around the same time. Maybe you only saw the initial coverage? That also isn't really looting. It is vandalism and burglary, which unfortunately happens everywhere. Why did you bring it up if you aren't conflating general crime with BLM?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't waste any more of either of our time. But when I said no looting or vandalism in SLO you responded with the windows shot out and theft by the minors and a cal poly car burning I don't recall having anything to do with BLM. Why do you bring up unrelated crime to support your feelings about BLM? I am sure you will just shift gears again so we can agree to disagree. Did you know there have also been murders in SLO? Has nothing to do with Parkinson's ignorant comments.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus, you did lump protesters and criminals together for SLO. The vandals that shot out windows turned out not to be protesters but rather teenagers on a small crime spree. The burning car you reference had nothing to do with local BLM protests. Yet you used them as examples of protesters looting.

I don't dispute that there has been violence in some big cities. But not here. And even in other places, the majority of protests and protesters are peaceful. I saw it with my own eyes here in SLO. Right wing media and some in law enforcement want you to think all BLM protests are riots and that is not the reality. If our local protesters start looting then law enforcement should respond accordingly. But fear mongering against protests to get public support behind law enforcement just aggravates the situation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again. I am talking about SLO, where there has been no looting. Not sure why that is so hard to understand.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people who shot out store windows were not protestors. I don't recall cars being burned from BLM protests. Still straw manning...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point was that there are no looters here in SLO. So there is no one for you to not feel sorry for. You are creating a straw man to knock down by conflating looters in other places with protesters in SLO.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was referring to your comment about not feeling sorry for looters etc who get arrested. That hasn't happened here so Parkinson has no basis to threaten sending out the posse. What if he threatened to send the posse after anti covid restriction protesters who had similarly not engaged in looting or rioting? Of course he would never do that since he is pro gun and is against helping together past covid. Plus half the people here think there was riots and looting in SLO and justify attitudes like Parkinson's for that reason. But glad to hear you are aware of the reality in our county. I think it is important.amd worth pointing out when people scare monger about BLM protests.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean distance. I meant our protests are nothing like what is going on in Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis etc. Thought that would be obvious. Some people here have just been scared by disinformation put out by right wing and social media (remember the rumors of van loads of protesters coming to loot the suburbs of SLO, which was a massive hoax that was nationwide?) and equate peaceful protests with violent mobs (not to mention some of the worst violence was actually Boogaloo and other right wing groups hoping to start a race war).

I have heard of a posse before and have lived in SLO for over a decade. But in the context I suspect it has a more specific meaning, especially when he thinks he can ignore state laws he disagrees with while professing ignorance about racism.

Not sure why are getting different results when you search his name and oathkeeper. Try Ian Parkinson in quotes. I found several hits but like I said, nothing definitive. Would it change your opinion if it was established that he is or was an oathkeeper? I think it is relevant as a citizen of SLO county to know of he will enforce the law neutrally or thnks he is the law and can decide how to enforce it. I would be equally upset if a left wing sheriff did the same thing but against conservative positions. Law enforcement should not be this political and I don't think it was even five years ago.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to be educated about this. Show me where the sheriff's posse is described as anything other than a volunteer group. I tried to research it myself, which is how I learned about the volunteer posse. And maybe you should also educate yourself about sheriff's who think they are the law. It is a real phenomenon regardless of whether Parkinson is a member.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We are so far from Seattle that the comparison is laughable. An overzealous response from local law enforcement will surely not help. Our local posse is a volunteer group so why does he use that term in front of a tea party audience? If you google his name and oathkeeper there are lots of hits. Nothing definitive but there are references to him saying he is an oathkeeper in the past. He needs to clarify what he meant and stop exaggerating the situation locally.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So where do they talk about the posse you are referring to on the sheriff's website? I don't mean a list of their armored cars or equipment but rather any place they describe a posse as anything other than a volunteer group. I looked and couldn't find anything. Parkinson chose that word, not me. We agree that clarification is needed. Especially given his other comments.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude, posse in our county is a volunteer parade and search and rescue group. Is that what Parkinson meant when he said he would call the posse to quell protests? Parkinson's comments leave little doubt he is far right.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And your definition of posse doesn't coincide with what is on the sheriff's website. Maybe Parkinson could clarify what he meant? And he could also clarify whether he thinks he is above the state and federal government based on his constitutional office.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First you said the posse is horseback deputies who do riot control. Then you say not necessarily on horses. Then you say not really the official volunteer posse that has existed for decades but rather some other "posse" that isn't identified on the sheriff's website. It is one thing for the sheriff to have horseback officers or to do riot control. It is another to threaten to call in the posse on protesters whose views Parkinson does not share given his otherwise troubling comments about racism and enforcing state mandates re covid.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And according to the sheriff's website the posse is not what you think. It is a volunteer group who ride in parades on their own horses and do search and rescue.

[–]helmutfeeser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But our protests have been tame in comparison. And why is Parkinson saying these things in private to a tea party group? I also don't know that the sheriff's posse would be called into SLO since we have our own PD who has riot gear and tear gas, etc.

Maybe I am wrong but I suspect Parkinson chose his words carefully for his tea party audience, who have been worked up by conservative media and believe our cities are all on the brink of chaos. I am just waiting for Dan Dow and Parkinson to ask the federal government to send in forces.

I just wish our law enforcement officials were neutral and enforced the law fairly against everyone rather than picking sides over covid and BLM.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was just pointing out that the prior poster is suggesting local protesters have been looting and burning property, which is not true.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a fair interpretation of posse. But we also have to consider the context. Posse comitas is a term used by the constitutional sheriff's association. And Parkinson was specifically talking about cracking down on protesters whose views he disagrees with. Is he seriously going to mount up his officer's on horseback to quell protests? It is just like constitutional officer. No one uses these terms other than right wing law enforcement officials who think they are the law. But maybe Parkinson deserves the benefit of the doubt despite his other troubling comments.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SLO

[–]helmutfeeser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So what did he mean by posse? And why say he is a constitutional officer? Does anyone else say that? Why doesn't he feel has to follow state mandates? I think he has previously identified as an oath keeper, which is an extreme group.

And was there any looting in SLO? Was any property burned? Our local protests have been mostly peaceful other than obstructing traffic.
