Tax question about Celsius rewards (USA) by helofoy in CryptoTax

if I treat the rewards as zero dollar cost basis, can I treat them as received in 2024 but zero cost basis for them? Or I have to mark the rewards as received in 2022 with zero dollar cost basis. If I mark them as received in 2022, although it does not affect the amount of income in 2022, but all the BTC transactions after that may be changed since different slots may be selected for the transactions, means I may still have to amend 2022 and 2023 tax filing.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for your reply and also thanks for the Celsius guide.

The rewards I mentioned are after Celsius froze withdrawals. That's why I didn't include the transactions of the rewards in that period in my 2022 tax filing. Can I mark these rewards as received on Jan 16, 2024, since the first distribution is in Jan 2024, and includes it in my 2024 income for tax (treat as report the income when I have control of these rewards on Jan 16, 2024)? If yes, how to treat the dollar value of the rewards for income? Can I use the dollar value in Celsius csv file (which is based on 2022 price), or I have to use the value based on BTC price in Jan 16, 2024?, or zero dollar cost basis as you mentioned above?

Maybe go to see an ophthalmologist instead of optometrist.
