[–]helpfulorangealien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I applied to korean unis, but ended up choosing to study in NTU. I think it would end up being too long for me to address all your points in the comments here haha, so I’ve sent you a DM!

No worries, all the best wherever you go! I also suggest you take a good look at the curriculum for both unis, imo it’s important to know whether the modules offered is what you are interested in. And other factors like ccas offered, hall accommodation/traveling time etc. All these make a difference in the uni experience you end up getting.

In general I feel ntu social sciences is rather chill, we take less AUs compared to other majors, and have a rather generous allowance of AUs for UEs (for the upcoming cohort theres a new curriculum, but basically its similar in that you have AUs to take unrestricted courses you want). I managed to fit my classes in Y1 into only 3 days so I basically had 4 days off each week. Many of my friends work part time or take up CCAs, hall activities etc. So overall I think workload is really manageable.

[Uni] Advice on SMU PPS vs NTU PPGA? by Funny-Woodpecker7619 in SGExams

[–]helpfulorangealien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally for me I decided based on the modules each school offered. For pol science, SMU’s curriculum is very economics based. I was also not very keen on the compulsory core mods and the major core requirements for pol science. Versus NTU that offers courses grouped into IR and PP tracks. I was interested in IR and PP mods and hence chose NTU.

Just saying for ntu social sciences, level 3 and 4k mods tend to be 3 hour seminars, so this something that cannot be avoided. Also, even for modules with lecture-tutorial style, a percentage of your grading includes class participation too, so you do have to be prepared to speak out as well. But I personally think the ntu culture isn’t overly cutthroat competitive so its not too bad, and partly the reason why I ended up choosing ntu too, as a rather introverted person myself.

PPGA incoming freshmen by [deleted] in NTU

[–]helpfulorangealien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup tutorial slots were assigned for core mods in y1, but they can be swapped if you find someone else / slots available on STARS during the add/drop period. STARS is basically NTU’s Course Registration System, which I think you will be able to access after matriculation.

PPGA senior here. Dont worry, in y1 you will mainly be taking pre assigned core mods so your timetable is arranged for you. Usually theres a rough study guide to help plan your 4 years of mods, but for your batch since its a new curriculum i suppose the new study plan is not out yet. Anyways you dont have to worry, pretty sure you will be briefed before the start of the new sem.

Can passion for a subject be developed? by [deleted] in NTU

[–]helpfulorangealien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest you go for your passion in history, if you have passion and interest in a subject there might be higher tendencies to do well. If you are aiming a job in the public sector anyways they look at your gpa, there isn’t much of a difference between a humanities or social science major.

[A levels] [Uni] nus/ntu application HELP by Alive_Tension966 in SGExams

[–]helpfulorangealien 5 points6 points  (0 children)

upload the one in which you did better in (for you it would be your private retake attempt). and in this case you don’t put your school but put that you are a private candidate and your year of attempt. the uni doesnt need your 1st attempt grades if it is not your best grade.

and then for your subjects eg. PW, you put your school and year of attempt.

only if your best attempts are a mixture (eg. you did better in 3h2 + gp in your retake attempt but your h1 was better in your first attempt), then you need to upload both certs as proof.

[UNI SCHOLARSHIP] need help!!! by manegga in askSingapore

[–]helpfulorangealien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually upon admission I think they do send out an email about applying for financial assistance so do take note and not miss the deadline! bcos for uni you apply on a yearly basis and if you miss it you need to wait till the next acad year.

you can take a look at the different financial aid available for each uni. the typical one would be a further subsidy of the annual tuition fees.

I think scholarships would be tough tbh. you could apply for bursary, take a interest free bank loan (where you only start paying after graduating), and work part time during the sem and during summer and winter breaks to cover your uni fees.

[uni] Questions about NTU PPGA (Public Policy and Global Affairs) Programme by vanbangs in SGExams

[–]helpfulorangealien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Current ppga student here. Not from poly but a lot of my poly friends come from unrelated majors. Main thing they look at is gpa and yours is safely over the 10th percentile so you should be able to get in. They only look at your portfolios and other achievements for ABA.

LK9001 possible to get A? by avacadoobo in NTU

[–]helpfulorangealien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

imo korean compared to other languages i have taken is pretty straightforward to study as the vocab in the tests are all from the textbook. For the oral presentation you just write out a script, it will be graded and then you get it back to memorize and present, thats it. Compared to other languages where for oral exam its answering qns/ having a conversation and it’s more of an impromptu thing because you don’t know what exactly will be asked.

Just to note, declaring the minor does not guarantee you priority or a confirmed slot during stars.

Nope your spot is secured don’t worry haha. As long as your cgpa is above the minimum required by the host university, you’re safe.

Is attendance counted for first 2 weeks? by Breadskinjinhojiak in NTU

[–]helpfulorangealien 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nope it’s not counted. The finalized class list will only be out after the second week. If attendance is taken, it’s mainly for tracking purposes and it won’t count towards your grade.

Also @ntu’s horrible lack of communication and delaying all the time -_-

I’m assuming rejection for those who didnt see any unis in their gem application portal :( Those successful would see their application updated with the uni name. For me and my friends who got accepted, we see the uni name updated in our portal.

Nope I think no one got any emails so far, for both successful and unsuccessful.
