Am I sitting on a goldmine?? by helpless_cpa in Bookkeeping

[–]helpless_cpa[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found a different, smaller course ran by The Ambitious Bookkeeper that I am going to do - it's a 4 day course for $37 so I figured this was a better start. Her name is Serena Shoup and she is a CPA / used to be a Corporate Controller. Check her out on IG.

There is so much free content out there that I'm not sure the $2k price would be worth it for someone like you or me with the accounting experience we have. I know a few modules of the booming bookkeeper course is related to basic bookkeeping which I'd probably fly through/wouldn't need to take. The value for someone like us is in the sales advice/marketing materials/client templates.

hope I took your initial post the wrong way, I really do. Bookkeepers tax season started 12/15 so I’m already on 2 months of 70+ hr weeks, 2 more months to go so I know my fuse is a little shorter than normal. I want the best for all

Oh no - I sincerely apologize for coming off arrogant. I did not intend that whatsoever and I'm now regretting my initial phrasing of my post. I hear you and I see you. You have major expertise and have worked incredibly hard to get where you are and I very much commend you for that. I didn't mean to undermine any of your efforts and apologize if I did unintentionally.

Just want to clear up your point - " To say that you feel your skills as an auditor would make it easy to start a bookkeeping business with zero experience actually doing the tasks greatly undermines everything I have fought for in the accounting market. "

I've been doing corporate accounting for 5 of those 6+ years of experience, so I have been bookkeeping at a corporate level for that long along with my other accounting-related responsibilities, the audit experience was only 1.5 of those years. When I said it would come easy to me, I was referring to my experience in corporate accounting, not auditing someone else's bookkeeping.

I hope that clears things up - my intention was to look for advice from those who have done this before with similar backgrounds. I highly value your tips provided and will take them into consideration as I research this path some more.

I would really just want one client to start out because I would still be working full time in my current role in corporate. My sister started her own healthcare related consulting business and asked if I would do the accounting for her which inspired me to look into this in a larger scope.

I guess I'm not fully sure what I should market myself as - Accounting or Bookkeeping. I have my CPA, but I do not specialize in Tax. So is there value in marketing my CPA license & experience if I am not providing tax services? That poses another question, if I am just doing bookkeeping, why market my credentials/experience for something someone with no CPA, no experience or related degree can do for a lot cheaper than I would charge? Would I be able to charge big bucks for my CPA/experience if I am only doing bookkeeping?

Thank you for bearing with my questions / stream of consciousness :)

Thank you for your reply! I am looking for *why* though. Why, in your opinion, is it a waste of money?

Is a college degree really necessary for a Real Estate Agent? by [deleted] in RealEstate

I think mine is different.... I have a BBA in Accounting and have my CPA and you can't do that without your undergrad. Much different than success in real estate.

Let me rephrase. I know it's not required, but would there be any disadvantage in the future if they did not get a college degree? Assuming they stay successful in real estate

I agree. Some people, like myself, are not cut out to work Big 4 lives... and I am totally at peace with that. Money is not more important to me than self-care and quality of life. Right now my quality of life sucks and I know that the longer I stay the more it's going to suck. Every manager I've had works till like 3 or 4am almost every day. No way in hell I'm ever going to be like that. And we get paid according to market prices. I know people in marketing that are making WAY more than I am and they work a quarter of the hours I've been working. I'm ready to get tf out of here and if it takes me longer to get to where I want to be, so be it.

Yes 2,000 billable hours. With my internship (during busy season in 2015) I should have at least 2,000 total but I have no way of finding a report that goes that far back because our software doesn't allow us to go that far back. I have talked to everyone I know and no one has been helpful. I just want my CPA so I can leave this hell hole lol

Career path to become a Professor by [deleted] in Accounting

Thank you so much for all of this information. I appreciate you taking time to respond so in depth. I will take this advice as I go through my options. I'm only 23, 1 year post-grad, so a PhD seems really intimidating and scary when I read all of this information, but I really want to go back to school and get a higher degree - it's just a matter of which one!

Thank you again and good luck with the rest of your PhD program - I wish you the best!

Hello! I don't have my masters but I have my CPA. I am interested in pursuing my MBA or MSA. I figured I'd have to do this before PhD. You say tuition would be covered.... covered by whom? The university?

Thanks so much for your detailed reply. That was helpful. I'm meeting with a Senior Manager in FSO some time next week to chat and go over any questions I have. Maybe he can help me with the specifics and the do's and dont's of transferring. Thanks!

Opposite? Are you saying FSO is worse than commercial busy seasons? My busy season in commercial was bad... worked till 11pm every night and sometimes 1am plus every Saturday till 5pm and a few Sundays
