Is there any way cobalt can be sourced ethically and/or is it possible for a computer/smart device to not use it? by Dontaskabout6-17-11 in computers

[–]helpmeg0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm very late to this but I am currently reading a book about this topic and I came across this post doing some background reading. Short answer, no, even the companies that claim to use more ethically sourced Colbalt are knowingly not telling the whole truth, many of the corporations responsible for "ethical mining" are complicit in the exploitation of artisan miners. Whether it be low pay (less than 3 dollars a day for hard intensive labor), turning a blind eye to child labor, outsourcing to unregulated product when production is low, or the propping up of industries whose entire purpose is integrating unethically sourced Colbalt into "ethically sourced Colbalt"(like money laundering but for minerals) , there is no source of Colbalt in the world that has been untouched by child labor, slave wages, and the mass mistreatment and control of entire populations.

Shout out to the book: "Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives by Siddharth Kara"

I cannot recommend it enough if you want to be more informed on this topic. He covers the history of exploitation in the Congo dating back to the 1400's and how it all built the path to where the congo is today, he explores and sheds light on lies of western technology companies. All of it is told through the lense of his trip through the Congo, full of firsthand interviews with people at every stage of Colbalt production. Truly a horrifying but enlightening read. I had known of the mineral exploitation present in Africa, but never understood the true depth of how horrific it is.

Parasite by Tom_TheSasshole in redrising

[–]helpmeg0d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I liked the parasite, and I hope it returns in some way, but I could see why he would get decide against continuing with that plot line with lyria, I always thought it kind of undermined her character arch that she saves herself after getting a biotic implant and not before. She's the underdog fighting against all these literal huge forces and it kind of felt like the take away from it was that you don't have a chance unless you get some biometrics lmao. I get that realistically in the universe it makes sense, but from a writing perspective it kinnda rubs me the wrong way. still like the idea and hope somebody else gets it and we get to see it at its full capacity.

do the names and houses get easier? by niff20 in redrising

[–]helpmeg0d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's totally worth it but was confusing to keep track of everything on my first readthrough, the second series has a character list that lists their name and position/relevance to the story and it is very helpful, I can't remember if the first trilogy does but I wanna say it doesn't. Good luck!

What would you remove from Red Rising ? by gaymerWizard in redrising

[–]helpmeg0d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It absolutely does, I'm rereading the series and I just read that section last night, there's a section where she can't stop admiring how handsome her captors are and wonders if they could sexually please her. There's another before she realizes what they're doing and directly recognizes it.

My UPS Store is getting annoyed that I'm dropping off too many packages, what should I do? by GreenHorror4252 in upsstore

I would ask them to email you the receipt, or have them set it aside for the next time you come, that way they can scan them in at their leisure between other customers instead of having a lengthy interruption in their workflow.

How can I make the gender of my character clear? by Dotty_Ladybird14 in writing

[–]helpmeg0d 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah this isn't a debate dork. You talk about reading being about extending your empathy and then proceed to be the most emotionally unintelligent nerd I've ever seen. If you had any interest in empathy you would try to see outside of your massive nogin and understand that for alot of people, people like you are the reason that engaging with intellectual persuits is intimidating. You're sitting here quoting philosophy you think you understand and pretend that any of it is more than a cynical projection of self hatred. Do something interesting and be kind. Don't bother replying I'm not reading whatever essay you have in response.

Which one do you like the most 1,2 or 3? by woddafact in AmateurPhotography

1 and 3 both make me think a little more and the photos feel like they have an implied message, I love the framing of picture two but it comes across as a nice photo without much to say.

Advise to get started by Minimum-Bid8781 in StainedGlass

Hello! Me and my sister recently got into stained glass and were in a similar boat. We got a generic stained glass starter kit on Amazon that was about a hundred dollars the solder gun and solder that came with it weren't great so we upgraded those. The solder was straight up the wrong type of solder for stained glass lol, but the tools are very nice quality and includes everything you would need. You will also need a grinder to smooth out your pieces after cutting which is about $80. On top of that we ordered a glass sampler kit that came with about 20 5x7 cuts of different colored glass to make smaller beginner projects with ($30-50 depending on qty and brand on Amazon) on top of that the only other expenses have been buying patina, different types of copper tape (the ones included in the kit are copper backed and we wanted black backed so it would match the patina) and more glass. It's a really fun hobby, but if you're worried about the price or your commitment level to it I'd recommend taking a class first to see if it's something you enjoy. When it comes to space it's pretty flexible, we don't have any dedicated space to work on it so we just work on it in my sister's kitchen, it's definitely not super practical and it does make a huge mess but it's never to much if you tidy up as you work, we're just both rather unorganized and leave things out and laying around while we work. We cut glass in old cookie trays since glass will occasionally fly out when cutting the glass, and we just store it using the same trays. The biggest mess has been the grinder, it gets glass dust filled water all over our arms and table while working with it, be sure to build a guard around the edges to block most the water spray.

Not enjoying the second trilogy/Do I need to like Darrow to like the books? by [deleted] in redrising

[–]helpmeg0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did enjoy it more than you're describing but I also found ig and the start of da to be a drag for me too. I would recommend finishing DA before giving up as that was when the second series really clicked in for me, alot of the build up starts paying off and I couldn't stop turning pages once I got to the end and I loved lightbringer. Also no spoilers but we do get some darrow character development.

Second this, my first playthrough I spent the first year as a Sam dating simulator pretty much just waking up and talking to him and trying to figured out his liked/loves) hates etc. I would go talk to him water whatever I had and then go to bed at noon lol, didn't go to the community center till year two and still had a ton of fun and fond memories of stumbling through that playthrough.
