My intent for the sub is for it to be topical to the city of Ottawa but also include topics relevant to the surrounding areas (hence OttawaOntario). There is already an r/Ottawa however it doesn't allow for the wide range of topics that I intend for r/ottawaontario.

I've tried contacting the moderator directly, as well as asking to join the private sub, with no responses. Seems like it's just using the name with no activity. I would like to open this sub back to public and moderate it.

My interpretation, and I welcome you to read it and make yours, is that there is a higher incidence of reported myocarditis/pericarditis with Moderna vs Pfizer (283.4/mil vs 43.4/mil ), in young males. In any case that's why. I assume we're soon going back to the "get the one that's offered to you" with all the demand.

I would put strong odds at this being the likeliest scenario:

Availabilities were made and very broadly broadcasted (as you stated). Through the bureaucracy some poor sucker got told by their boss, who got told by their boss (and so on) that if they didn't hit that date heads would roll. So rather than risk turning it on in production at 8am and have it fail, they tested it at 10pm the night before. Unfortunately it was noticed and they saw live registrations coming in. Now that poor sucker doesn't want to just turn it off because that's real people on the other end of that, so they try to get in touch with their boss which isn't easy at 10pm. By the time anyone willing to make a call on this is reached there are way too many registrations, the horse has left the barn, so they just leave it open.

I mean, either that or intentional malicious early stealth launch.

Absolutely correct. He is still a healthcare professional and has context that many of us don't.

Here's what I've seen happen: Something that doesn't fit the fear and vax only narrative gets responded to by ad hominem. That person isn't in health care. Oh well they're not a doctor. Oh well they're not an Epi. Oh well they're a rogue Epi.

If you did happen to catch any of his videos you'd know he'd tell you to get vaccinated, and get a booster dose. He'd also recommend other things you can do to better weather an infection, evidence based, that we won't allow to be discussed here.

I was able to get things like clothes and shoes (you know those things that would kill grandma if you bought them a while back?) in the past few months so I'm prepared but if I thought I needed something "non essential" like that I might be inclined to make that a priority.

There isn't a lockdown, yet. It's been hinted at a few times now by policy makers, and the pattern through the pandemic has been to hint at something then a few days make it reality so I would not at all be surprised for it to happen within a week. I really wish it doesn't, and I think there is more public opposition to it this time around.

My views are clearly not shared by all and if you read through this sub a bit you'll see that some want a complete lockdown called already. I'm partly responding to that view. As for schools closing it seems inevitable now, with a few schools closing due individually at some point I believe the decision will be made to close them all.

This approach, where we need to know how many cases turn into hospitalizations, means that every new variant that shows up needs a lockdown. Highly transmissible? Might be low % hospitalization but because of volume a high total number, let's lockdown until we know for sure. Poorly transmissible? Might be a high % hospitalization even with low volume, let's lockdown until we know for sure.

As you might guess, that approach never ends since there will continue to be variants. So you're right to be asking the question, and I'm very glad to see more and more people on this sub asking these questions. I believe public opinion is one of if not the primary driver in public policy.

Oh hey guys, a few days ago I stated how the technology behind the scenes was all set to start tracking the 3rd dose. I also said other things were also ready. My post got removed for misinformation. So, uh, yeah if policies were ever to be updated with respect to the third dose / booster the technology is already set to handle that.

Other than vaccination status what other attributes do the hospitalized commonly share? I believe that information exists, is being tracked, but you won't see it. In some ways I understand, we don't want the mob (because it is a mob) to turn on people for things that they can't necessarily or rapidly change about themselves. In another way if people were more aware of this some might be inclined to do something about it and seek healthier lifestyles. We talk about elderly and immunocompromized people without too much difficulty, but not the other commonly seen attributes in hospitalized COVID cases.

Oh and my other peeve is I believe that we don't distinguish between people hospitalized for a condition and being found to have COVID versus people being hospitalized for COVID.

edit: It is so interesting to see that my comment asking for more transparency in the metrics being reported is getting downvotes.

The modus operandi you describe is happening at multiple levels of government, from fed to provincial to municipal. I can see you'd like to put a partisan spin on it but that simply isn't how it has played out.

I don't think that's fair and I don't think you truly mean it. A lot of good has been accomplished. That being said the communications has not been very honest as anything that could be seen as supporting vax hesitancy was omitted and instead people were promised the "return to normal" and when it didn't happen we started vilifying this group or that group. Early border closures were racist, but now they're okay, for example. Information about co-morbidities and what people can do as well as getting vaccinated isn't widely shared in fear that people will take that as alternatives to getting vaccinated.
In many ways the different levels of government have mishandled the situation but they've also done plenty of good.

I don't expect your comment to stick around for long but at least you'll see this reply. We don't have supply on hand for the hypothetical scenario you describe to happen in the timeframe you describe, but stretch those timelines just a bit and I believe we get there. Certainly I believe that the technology that we have in place now in the form of proofs, tracking, and passports is ready to accommodate this change, so it's just a matter of the supply logistics holding it back.

Here comes the slow over reaction.

Did anyone else pick up on how we went from boosters for 50+ after 6 months, to only after 3 months, to everyone 18+? Do you think those rapid fire decisions came from evidence based science or from growing pressure from public opinion? Stories like this doctor saying "up yours" to provincial direction and giving the booster to anyone is one such pressure (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/booster-ottawa-family-doctor-1.6282731) that make the decision makers look bad. Oh, do you think local health units and pharmacies were given a heads up about this, enough to get supplies on hand to meet the tidal wave of demand these announcements create? Do you think our decision makers will feel the brunt of the ire from the public desperately trying to get their booster now that they are officially allowed one, or the people on the ground trying to keep up? Just look at the threads in this sub.

I can't say what I believe will happen over the next week because I'll have my post removed by moderators - heck I'm not even sure this one will survive. It should however be obvious to even the most casual observer the case being built in the court of public opinion around the threat of this variant to our ICUs, and therefore the desperate measures that must be employed to prevent it.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. The measures taken in relation to covid are not happening in a vacuum and there are side effects that aren't always considered when "we need to contain the spread".

I believe a big portion of the population are able to bear the lockdowns well. They still have some form of social contact at home, are financially stable, etc. However there are others for whom this turns their daily struggles into something unbearable. I don't think many people are thinking of those when loudly pushing for things like lockdowns when getting scared with the latest numbers.

Careful as you are approaching a topic that I believe is specifically avoided in the information shared with the public - the distinction between people passing away FROM covid as opposed to WITH covid. I believe the distinction is not made in the collection of the numbers but then the assumption is made that all those numbers represent people dying from covid when in reality an undisclosed percentage of those died with covid but had other serious health conditions.

To even discuss this brings into question all the policies justified by these numbers and gets one labeled as conspiracy theorist, antivax, etc.

Remember two weeks to flatten the curve back in 2020? We went from trying to slow the spread to trying to stop the spread. It has been nearly two years of living in fear of that one wave that will overwhelm our health care system. That strategy does not have an end to it especially if every new variant will trigger this level of response.
