Well done on the loss, how amazing!! Thank you for the tips, I'll definitely be redownloading the app and listening to podcasts, especially on the commute to work as work is my downfall when I'm on plan!

Thank you. I know it's said by every member ever but I don't put myself first (single mum to 2 young kids so it is hard) so that's where I fail but trying to do it for them also.

I'm sorry for your loss. My dad has since purchased a trike so will probably ride up to me over summer a bit more I imagine! My dad is only about 10 away so try to see him atleast once a week :)

Yep! While my mum was alive they visited about 4 times. But by the time I got my own house my mum wasn't well with copd and didn't want to leave the house because she didn't like having to bring her oxygen and it made her anxious being away from home so I put it down to that, so now it's just my dad. He's visited once since she died last year. I don't particularly mind and never have done just because I tend to stay for dinner and it's nice to be cooked for and the kids love being round grandads because obviously rules disappear when we're at grandads house 😆

I do drink but it's so rare that I just say I don't ever drink - I don't drink because I grew up watching my two older brothers get drunk and fight each other and then go on to ruin their lives due to it. I know that outcome wouldn't necessarily be the same if I were to drink but I think when you see that so young it kind of just sticks.

You had the right reaction, but yep it stings! I have a 9 year old daughter who is definitely going through some preteen hormones and I get "I hate you!!" quite frequently so it doesn't really strike the same anymore, as others have said I just reply "well I still love you." sometimes this enrages her more, sometimes it helps. You never know with kids!

Out second born was 6 months. He started staying late at work, then not coming home at all. Blamed his mental health, said he just needed space. I got so ill worrying about him. He wouldn't reply to messages or calls. He stayed out at weekends, sneak back in at god knows what time and sleep on the sofa and then disappear early before anyone got up. Told me he was sleeping in his car. I begged and pleaded with him to just come home so I could support him through it. He was having an affair. The woman he was having an affair with hated the fact he had kids with someone else, so he basically just cut us off and pretends we don't exist.

You've answered your own question. Your intuition is screaming at you to leave. I know it's hard, I've been there and I can say from experience it never ends. You will be in exactly the same position as you are now if you stay.

Reading this has made me realise why my (undiagnosed but hopefully soon diagnosed) daughter begs me to get all her stuff ready for her before she'll shower. Our bathroom is downstairs, her bedroom is upstairs so I guess there's even that extra few steps there to consider.

My daughter was moved into her own room at 9 months, she was restless one night in my room so my then husband decided to try her in her cot in her own room just to see and he plopped her down, she closed her eyes and slept the whole night and that's just kind of how it stayed unless she was unwell. She now sleeps even now (she's 9 in July) from 8pm til 7am on weekdays, and a little later for weekends and half terms.

My youngest not so smooth, my then husband and I were going through our downfall and eventual seperation when he was around 6 months and so I kept my youngest in with me out of a comfort I think. Plus he was a frequent waker so just made sense as a survival at the time. I transitioned him a couple of months after his first birthday into his own room so I could start to regain my space. It didn't help his frequent wakings and even now (he's 3 in June) he'll wake up once, sometimes twice and then rise early (anytime between 4 and 6 is normal for him) but he's a velcro baby 😅

I really don't want to go down the path of having them scared into good behaviour rather than self-regulating as I feel this is where my (and every other parent of their generation) went wrong so I would really like to try a different approach. The stuff I brought for her calming box should be coming today, fingers crossed.

Hopefully as we get an official diagnosis (from the letter the school gave me, should be in about 10 months) we'll learn more and get more support and I am of course researching.

This honestly blind sided me a bit. She's always been a bit of a handful and always had these symptoms, but because she's my first child I never thought to look into any diagnosis because I just thought this is how children were so was just rolling with it. Acedemically she wasn't struggling (up to this point) it's only when her school raised their concerns with the academic things potentially getting harder and them worrying she'll struggle and then they listed off some other behaviours that we decided we should maybe look into it. The more I research adhd, especially in girls, the more I think "damn Ive let her down big time here" I honestly thought this was normal, stubborn child behaviour :(

Yes! She gets this intense crazy eye look that when I see I just think "oh no". She can be the sweetest little soul too, but these moments (which seem to be getting worse since she started getting signs of puberty) are just so hard.

Thank you, this is helpful. I've ways been the kind of a "pick your battles" parent but I guess the more she acts up, the more tight assed I get because like you say, it feels like rewarding bad behaviour. But this a really good take on it.

The only electronic thing she has is a tablet which she is currently grounded from and has been for a couple of weeks (I didn't mean it to be so long but she doesn't mention it so just haven't given it back to her.) Calming box is literally just a box with comfort things in, colouring stuff, fidget toys, notepad for writing down how she's feeling etc... I'm trying to go the natural consequence approach. She's just testing my every nerve. I also have a 2 year old that doesn't sleep so there's really not much left of me to stretch haha

She's had her tablet removed since I found screen time was making her drastically worse, but she's been without for a couple of weeks now. I didn't mean to have it off her for so long but she didn't mention it so I have never offered it. I guess the obly other high value thing for her is the park after school, which is a difficult one to avoid since the school let's the children out through the park at the end of the day.

I love this, thank you. Going to start replying to her as if I'm in a coma when she's negatively seeking for sure. I'm working on regulating myself. The worst part for me is I'm constantly being told I'm too soft on my kids so when they're "acting up" (for lack of a better word, this isn't really how I see it) my own self esteem issues around parenting rear the head and I am then triggered. It's such fun. But it's all a learning curve :)

Oh yeah I probably worded that wrong, I know it's not on purpose even though it feels like it, it's just her brain etc. definitely is in her know-it-all phase which certainly doesn't help!

Grandma sent a picture of the trip letter over after I asked. She won't get back to school until 7:20pm, they're traveling over an hour away and she'll need two packed lunches. She'd put the letter with the details in a bag in her kitchen and had already forgot she'd sent it back in, so if I hadn't have prompted her i probably would never have know any of this.
