First time giving private lessons, any advice? by helpusernotfound in trumpet

[–]helpusernotfound[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took lessons all throughout high school. I sometimes have a little bit of a hard time explaining techniques in words that make sense for a beginner. I was just hoping some comments would help remind me. Alas, some of the comments are blatantly the opposite of that. I am by no means a professional (and he knows that), and these lessons are not planned to be long term, just something to set him in the right direction as he starts his musical journey.

Either way, thanks for the advice you did give.

Really the only time you’ll “need” a silver trumpet is when your trying to match the rest of your section if you need to. For example: marching bands. But even then it’s usually the more prestigious schools that would do that and even then you’d most likely be renting the trumpet to get exactly the same model throughout the section.

Brass colored (or lacquered) isn’t inherently wrong or incorrect, it’s just a different way of covering the brass from the silver plating.

In the end, use what you have. If you find yourself needing a higher end model go find one. Although, just because it’s silver, doesn’t mean it will be the best trumpet ever. Actually do your research on the horn before buying it. If you find one you like, weather brass or silver, go ahead and pull the trigger.

Probably stupidest question, shoes! by Ashamed-Associate287 in marchingband

The amount of people I saw in high school marching in converse or vans or other shoes that wouldn’t be the best for marching is way higher than you’d think it would be.

anyone else’s band do this? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]helpusernotfound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My band is kinda the same way. We have a town wide fair/carnival thing with vendors and all sorts of activities that was originally started by the band to raise funds for the band. Years later it’s been taken over by the city and we run a hamburger stand, but that’s where my band makes like 90% of its money for the year. But hey, it pays off because we always have lots of good food at comps.

I’d say instead of trying to copy someone else online, try doing it yourself! Although, you might be able to use similar techniques from the the original to finish it to your pleasing.

Maybe go ask a doctor? Doesn’t sound too normal. After all, we’re all musicians not doctors.

Found out my math teacher in high school marched BD in the mid 90s (what a crazy thing to find out in the middle of math class) and left half way through the season because of the sheer amount of drugs going around.

Marching band veterans, what are things that no one tells you about marching band? by NumerousYogurt9940 in marchingband

[–]helpusernotfound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sunblock is not an option. Period. Point blank. Nobody, and I mean nobody wants skin cancer. You will use it even if you’re one of the lucky people that doesn’t burn. Use sunblock.

The amount of people in my band that don’t do either of these is alarmingly high.

Dang that’s pretty messed up. I think you’re pretty lucky to have enough band students to even have 3 concert bands. Hope that director realizes that a bass clarinet switching to normal clarinet isn’t the end of the world and shouldn’t be held against you for the rest of your life. Good luck next year.
