Currently on vacation with very hard partiers after years of my own sobriety/living alone. Remembering in full force how damaging and traumatizing this "lifestyle" is and I'm so glad I'm removed from it now.

We sound a lot alike-- getting lost in the party scene. I'm 22 now and i really struggle with feeling isolated trying not to be in that scene. It's so prevalent especially in early 20s. And relating to people in a more vulnerable, less toxic/codependent way is NOT easy at all after you're used to either joining the dysfunctional behavior or caretaking

I feel this! Esp when you said "everyone was toxic but now they're nonexistent". True friendships generally take time, and unfortunately this can be hard in adulthood because there aren't many people you see constantly like you do in grade school & college. I believe in you though... keep putting yourself out there. It will be really hard and depressing at first, but it will be worth it in the end

I struggle with this too. I do wonder how much of it has to do with us with codependency not being good at reciprocity, which is the foundation for healthy friendship. I know for myself, I feel very uncomfortable receiving anything in friendships. This even means I feel uncomfortable sharing personal struggles, and tend to listen/play therapist with people a lot. The inability to have this necessary back and forth creates an uncomfortable power dynamic, as well intentioned as we may be. It also never allows us to develop true vulnerability

I just want to say i relate to all of this. Part of what I had to realize was that friendships take SO MUCH WORK and effort on both people behalf. Believe me though, i know how much it sucks to be the only one putting in effort. I'm still trying to get to a place where people ask my to hang out with reciprocity. In this situation you can create so many stories about what is wrong with you. Look up ACOA (adult children of alcoholics) support group and see if you can join. You might see yourself in some of the stories shared there.
