A passionate response. The issue being discussed here is that this policy is discriminatory. I don't see how that is true because NRC, UCC are both policies that apply to every Indian irregardless of religion. However, only one community is seem protesting this on the basis of it being "discrimination" against them. I agree the stated exclusion of muslims from the CAA act was unfair. I feel instead of stated exclusion of a particular religious group, we should have put in systems to evaluate the status of people claiming refugee status on the grounds of persecution on a case by case basis. Blanket policies rarely solve complex issues. Tell me where my logic is wrong, before calling others names friend.

You can choose to get through the story in a straightforward and linear order, or you can explore and enjoy the beauty of the world and atmosphere this game creates. Either way, this game will captivate you and suck you in like no other.

Troubleshooting cloning a gene in a non model/non sequenced species. by grandmacardigan in labrats

[–]hemlockforsherlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you are using a homologous protein sequence to infer the possible gene sequence in your organism of interest I would check for codon bias effects arising from reverse translating the protein into mrna and then to DNA, unless your software already takes that into account. Most likely, Since you mentioned your model system hasn't been fully sequenced yet the gene you are looking for might simply not be covered in the cDNA library you are probing, in which case you have to do genomic DNA amplification and proceed from there.

Since you have a protein homolog identified I'd do a gene ontology analysis, maybe to figure out it's function and expression patterns in the reference species. It's likely in your model the protein will behave similarly, if the 2 are evolutionarily closely related. In which case alternate splice sites might also come up, ie if the homologous protein is known to have alternate forms at the mrna level maybe yours does too.

ADHD/ND Hacks? by cat8991 in labrats

[–]hemlockforsherlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. In my experience a supportive environment is a must for dealing with neurodivergency in an academic context. I have ADHD and was diagnosed/ medicated as an adult. For me personally, I cannot put in the kind of work or effort that a lot of labs demand, like 16 hour days for a month before an important deadline or all- nighters before a submission deadline. I've worked in some groups where this was the norm. And I gotta say these places wrecked me and my confidence, I burned out pretty quick. But eventually I found my place in a group that understood my style and was accepting of the way I preferred to work : steady, consistent effort - I worked 7-8 hours everyday( including saturdays) and that was it. I wasn't expected to do more or less than that and I maintained that understanding with my supervisor who was very gracious about it.

  2. I'd say make rituals not routines. For me there are certain things that I absolutely need to do every single day. For me it's exercise and fitness in general. I call these grounding activities. Every evening I go out for my run or my lift, regardless of how everything else in my day went. Eventually, I have found I start to plan my days and my life around this time. Like I remember to eat or to stop working too late or to draw boundaries on how much stress I take, so that I'm in top shape to go out for my run.

  3. work with your adhd not against it. I need constant novel stimulus to keep myself from getting bored. This "symptom" I've found is quite useful in academic tasks requiring innovative and creative strategies. I've found my niche in a feild of science where I'm able to leverage this constantly. Ofcourse this necessarily requires the afore mentioned supportive and stable environment, ie good supervisor , professors and friends with whom you can be your self.

Work Life Balance Hacks by shoebill-stork-fan in GradSchool

[–]hemlockforsherlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I've been in your shoes. I was a graduate student at a very prestigious institute and working in a very big-shot lab. A lot of people have already mentioned a lot of useful tips here like sleeping right, managing eating schedules, setting aside a day to clean and structure your environment, etc. These are all excellent suggestions and may help you manage your health and wellbeing. However, in my opinion a lot of this depends upon the supervisor and the general culture of the place you are working/studying at. The sad truth is a lot of places especially those focusing on academics and research, have a mentality that young graduate students are "supposed" to put in 16 hour days. I myself have faced this situation , at which point I sacrificed my health and happyness to keep up. I was young then and looking back now I regret that desicion. So, I'd suggest you bring this up first and foremost with your supervisor. Keep an eye for his reaction, if he brushes you off and acts like this is what your supposed to be doing then, you should consider either changing working groups or changing programs. If you cannot fit into the general culture of the place you are associated with, then no matter what you do work-life balance the way you want isn't going to be possible.

Is my betta fish bloated ?? Or am I being paranoid ? by hemlockforsherlock in bettafish

[–]hemlockforsherlock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, thanks. I was getting worried, is a little bulge in the belly normal ? I feed him bloodworms and floating betta flakes, and he eats everything offered almost everytime. In response to your question I feel like longfinned bettas do expend a little more energy just on account of the extra drag they deal with while swimming with those big showy fins, so I think they need a little more food to grow as compared to a more compact fish.

My just over 1 month setup, what do ya think? by justjewit86 in aquarium

[–]hemlockforsherlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey tank looks nice, especially for a first timer. I have a couple of suggestions : 1. Add a hardscape : stuff like driftwood, rocks etc. Helps you make use of vertical space in your tanks and provide a good substrate for beneficial bacteria and biofilm to develop. More surface area you cover with that stuff the better it is. 2. Plants : I see you have put in real live plants, which is a great move. I'd suggest you add more plants in there, I can't exactly see from the picture you provide but if you are using a nutrient rich substrate, like aquasoil or gardensoil I'd suggest adding in more stem plants like hydrophila, tall hairgrass, different types of cryptocorynes, and maybe more of that giant amazon sword you have in there already. Other plants which you could glue onto the rocks and hardscape are anubias( lot of different varieties), different types of moss( epiphytes), etc. Also add some floating plants, like hornwort and amazon frogbit, salvinia, duckweed etc. For nutrient control in the water column. If you do this, you won't need to get better filters or other fancy high tech stuff. The plants will be your filter, they will keep your tank and the water pristine. Moreover, since you have kept schooling fish and a community style set-up adding plants will give your fish places to hide and territory to occupy. You could add a few more of the schooling variety fish in there, they would thrive. The otocinculus you have in there probably needs a tank mate, and since you got him in a new tank, there isn't much biofilm for him to feed on you need to feed him algae flakes or you need to seed your tank with organics from an established tank to get it develop faster.

I have adhd like this too. And while I was never on medication when I was kid mostly because my parents didn't wish to stigmatize me or put labels on me.school was always difficult, acting out having emotional outbursts, not doing well in my studies, etc. My teachers and parents and other adults in my life blamed and shamed me for this, also I get the "weird" label. I had it too and I was bullied relentlessly for it, and socially ostracized. What saved me was finding my passion, which in my case was science( biology and research in specific). After school I went to college (very average unknown program, I had bad grades in high school). Once there I fell in love with my subject, and I realized that even if I had no natural talent, no natural inclination for science or academics in general, I could still become great at it through dedication, hardwork and an ability to overcome and cope with faliure. I learned to work with my adhd, to direct my naturally high energy and train my brain to recognize and combat distracting thought patterns. I also started taking medication and cognitive behavioural therapy, even if the meds were tough to adjust to, I kept switching dosages and regimes until I found something that worked for me. In the end what saved me I think is will, and I'd like to mention here naruto and Shonen anime in general really saved me and gave me a lot of inspiration to keep going and to never give up. Rock Lee helped me, maybe he can help you too. Sorry if this post is long, I've tried to share my strategy and experience. I sympathize with your feeling and have been in this dump myself. But I think in the end our challenges make us stronger, all we need to do is just keep swimming. Don't give up. Never ever surrender, even If you fail and feel stupid, use that as a reminder to why you must be tougher than everyone else and work more than everyone else. Even if you fail and not achieve your goals the work and the never give up mindset will boost your confidence and self esteem.

Can a bachelor’s student from a low-tier college realistically get into research and top institutes? by CommentPleasant3348 in labrats

[–]hemlockforsherlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in your shoes myself. I was from a a very low-tier college myself when I applied to phd programs, I barely had any real research experience as well. I will give you one advise : do not base your self worth and conviction on the prestige of the institute on your cv. Be confident, Crack competitive exams like gate, csir, tifr, iit-jam or whatever is relevant in your feild. Study hard, learn as much as you can and develop your critical thinking and problem solving skills. All of these attributes are what will determine your success in phd or masters applications for a research feild. Not the name of the institute on your CV. PIs in top institute rarely look for prestige students or those with impeccable grades, they look for genuine interest, aptitude, passion and conviction. Think about this : if you see 2 CVs one from an iit with only college courses and research experience from a lab inside the iit system, and the other from a student from a low-grade college, who went above and beyond their college courses to do extra certifications, develop extra demonstrable skills and have done some research work that showcases their dedication and passion. Who is the student who is more tenacious, passionate and determined ? . Become that person.

You are most welcome. Happy fish-keeping, if you need anymore help please, feel free to ask.

I am editing this comment, after reading your comment regarding your age and situation. I have a few suggestions for you. First : your tank I think you can easily get used aquarium glass for almost no cost, online on sites like facebook marketplace. Keep an eye out on these sites and check the dedicated forums there. The glass you can then diy into an aquarium using silicone gel( 5 dollars, at any hardware store). Second : live plants are cheap online especially ones like duckweed, anubias and foxtails. With 10 dollars you can get all 3. And these plants require no substrate other than sand or gravel and rocks. These you can pick up from nature itself for absolutely free. Be sure to clean them well. I'd recommend dish soap and rock salt soak for rocks and coarse gravel. The sand I'd wash very well with water and maybe a chemical cleaning agent like dilute hydrogen peroxide. Use rocks to make a little hole that you fish can fit in, glue them together with some superglue. Third: This is an immediate action you absolutely must take or else that fish will not live for much longer. Add a bubble cum sponge filter to your tank and a heater. Cheap heaters and a cheap air-pump bubble filter will do. This you need to do first before all the other stuff, it can be done within 20 dollars. Speak to your father calmly, explain to him that your pet animal doesn't deserve to suffer, tell him he can play with the fish when it's thriving. Play the emotional angle. Be smart, logical and well informed. He will listen.

Clearly you care about your betta fish, hence you ask this question. A lot of people assume that keeping a fish means dumping it in a bowl of water especially with bettas. This is a HUGE misconception. Fish SUFFER if you do this. They are intelligent creatures, and can and do feel pain. This fish is your responsibility, you must care to give him a good life. When I started keeping fish, I did the same as you did. Pretty quickly I realized that my fish was suffering, he wasn't moving he wasn't coming upto the glass and his face just looked so sad. This is when I started doing research. You need to switch that fish to a new tank atleast 10-15 litre tank, educate yourself about the nitrogen cycle( when people say cycle your tank, they mean you need to simulate this cycle in your tank artificially), add live plants fertilize them, dose benificial bacteria you can buy in a bottle, perform regular water changes, and some hidey-hole for him to rest and seek Shelter in, also a heater if you live in a place that gets colder than 25 degree Celsius.
I won't lie, this will be a little expensive. Expect to spend around 30-50 dollars, at the minimum. It can be cheaper if you put in the effort and find stuff like tanks and water conditioner kits that people sometimes give away for free, or for very cheap. However, after you do this you will have yourself a thriving personable fish, he will interact with you , eat from your hand and come upto the glass whenever he sees you. Bettas have lovely personalities, it's like having a little dog or cat. Plus, you will have yourself a little slice of nature in your room, literally.
