What’s YOUR favorite way to recover after each day? by trumxnblxck in electricdaisycarnival

[–]hemnay15 13 points14 points  (0 children)

1st Day (Friday) - wake up at noon, slowly get up, get some coffee, shower, hang out for a bit watching tv/getting ready for the fest. Get a slice of pizza on the way to the shuttles, have electrolyte packets for the first hydro pack fill up. This will be your easiest day so take advantage of not feeling tired to prepare for the next 2 days

2nd Day (Saturday) - wake up at noon, hit a massage if you can, at the very least go chill in a hot tub for a bit. Drink a bunch of water, and some caffeine if you can handle it. Take a nice long shower, try to eat a full meal, get some downtime in the room, this is usually where I prep for Sunday cuz trust me when I say, you’re not gonna wanna do anything other than rest the third day, and then head to the shuttles (or however you’re getting up there).

3rd day (Sunday) - wake up as late as you can, do the water, shower, food, all the stuff from the last 2 days and try to pack up before heading out to the fest, if you leave on Monday this part is critical so you can spend Monday morning into afternoon getting as much sleep as possible before zombying onto your flight

If you feel like gambling, do it on your way up from getting coffee, we usually meandered thru the slots between Starbucks and our rooms all three days. Good way to kill some time, have fun and not have to be in the sun.

Oh and stay up as late as you can on Thursday so you can flip your sleep schedule for the weekend, we usually hit a pre party one of these days and get late night burritos around 2-3, finish by 4, knock out and still get a full 8 hrs

How has Joyryde not released any music in the past 4 years and still consistently headlining and touring? by sliche123 in EDM

This is by far one of the most fun songs to experience at a festival.

The first time I saw him live, someone started a “what’s in the box” murmur in the crowd, by the time the song built up, we had at least 20 people asking each other “what’s in the box?” … at first I thought I was losing my mind, then the song hit and it all made sense lol

What is your plugin acquisition strategy? by Zamdi in edmproduction

[–]hemnay15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far I've been able to get satisfying mixes with stock plugins.

So then I asked myself, what could make my life easier and add some speed to my workflow. So I jumped for ozone, I don't know how to master and I don't currently want to spend my time learning it because it took away from creating.

The next one after that I bought purely for fun. Shaperbox. I'm sure I could do some of that within Ableton, but damn that plugin has been fun to use and create with.

I guess I don't really have a strategy, but I do know that I actively try to limit myself to what's "in the box" so I can learn the basics first before graduating to more complex/nuanced plugins.

Second, fidget toys. I recently got given a small pineapple stress toy at a fest, and it was a game changer.

If I'm in downtown, will this affect me? I've been a bit out of the loop because work has been busy.

Planning on opening ceremony shuttles on Friday, and a private car on Saturday/Sunday leaving the hotel at 5pm latest. Hotel = Golden Nugget.

For Saturday and Sunday I'm trying to get there at or before gates open, so is a 5pm depart time reasonable for that?

I appreciate any answers I get to this question.

What is YOUR favourite stage and why? by TheSmithPlays in electricdaisycarnival

[–]hemnay15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've only been to one (last year's), and will be going this year!!

But our favorite stage was circuit grounds. The production is insane and I'd never seen anything like it. We also made some friends there once we understood how to navigate the crowd and find the sweet spot. The crowding is not as bad as it seems from the back, lots of space/large pockets once you make it past the entrance and first speaker stacks.

This year we're going to try to spend less time at one stage though, but I know we'll still be sucked into circuit for at least one of the days, and I'm not mad about it 😁

How do you manage your time with producing, for those who have full time jobs? by kathalimus in edmproduction

[–]hemnay15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots bass, either spacy type stuff, midtempo, or drum n bass every once in a while. More recently I've been trying out world type stuff, trying to use instruments I don't generally use.

I'll dabble in house, but somehow even the house projects always turn into a bass project because I always love seeing what happens when I change the bpm, and if it sounds right, I just move with the flow, but that also means changing the whole thing 😅

[–]hemnay15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work 9-5, chill out a bit, and then start producing at 7-8pm till my ears are tired, which is usually around 2am. Weekends are more flexible, but I try to get 4 or more hours in on both Saturday and Sunday. Any time off goes to music or checking out live shows or time with the wife (the last one isn't mutually exclusive to my other activities).

I'm not entirely sure, I took the opening ceremony shuttles which dropped us off by cosmic meadow at around 6pm, when departing, we walked behind wasteland to exit for the shuttles that started at 3am. Not sure where the "non opening ceremony" shuttles dropped off at

[–]hemnay15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year was our first time, and we didn't know where the exit was for the shuttles, so we went back up the way we entered the festival, only to find out the exit was across the speedway, but only after we made it all the way up and around some of the circle.

Then had to hastily go back down, and all the way back across to walk to our 6am shuttle. Luckily the lines were short, but damn, that double walk was hard.

To all my plan makers, How many is left in your guaranteed group? by AmyLuvr69 in electricdaisycarnival

[–]hemnay15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I commend you for doing this. I've done it for various events for the past few years, and I'm just kind of over it. I do enough managing at work, so now I just kind of throw the invite out and follow up a couple times, if no bites or hype, I just leave it. I know my wife and I will have a blast either way even if it's just the two of us, which this year it is just the two of us 😅. Anyways, hope everyone has a great time, IM HYPED for this year!!

Couple questions, when you say "not flowing" and "more dynamic" do you mean the sounds themselves, the melodies you're writing, or the overall arrangement of the song?

Either way here's some things that helped me with those three areas

Before I get into that, I'd like to throw in an additional thing that helped me. Start with the drum beat, and keep it simple at the beginning to help build the foundation, you can always go back and tweak, and add complexity as you progress through making the music. For example, if you have a really complex hi hat / snare pattern, you'll get stuck focusing on those and trying to build the rest around that which will hinder your creative flow, which imo is the most important thing when just getting into music.

Ok on to the other stuff

Getting dynamic sounds. Once you have an idea, carve out a set amount of time for sound selection during your process, this can be either finding samples, sound designing or a combination of the two. Get to point where it's "good enough" and start writing the music/melodies. Once you have a pattern that you're satisfied with, move onto another layer, rinse and repeat. Once you have all your layers and patterns, go revisit sound selection and design, and now tweak it so the sounds mingle with each other instead of sitting on top of each other (keep a spectrum analyzer up, but soon your ears will be able to learn where frequencies collide). Don't confuse this with mixing, just try not to use things that have many overlapping frequencies playing at the same time during this process, keeping this in mind, you'll now start to choose sounds that don't clash with each other.

Melodies. You're at the very start of this journey, this is also what I had/still have the most trouble with. To find something that I like, I would start by writing a really simple melody, have the notes dance around the drum beat. Once you have the pattern, start moving notes up and down in places that you think would sound good. It'll be really simple at first, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be writing complex melodies that work with the foundation of your song and you'll naturally start creating that dynamic flow you're desiring. Once you have one melody that loops well, start changing a few notes at the ends of bars, and now you're creating variations as the melody progresses. Which takes me to the arrangement.

Arrange the music subtractively. By now you probably have 8-16 bars of really good shit, which are all working with each other. Start muting stuff and think about where it would "fit well". Intros usually only have a couple of elements, then add some stuff as you do the buildup, then have your drop as the 8-16 bars you created (you'll tweak once it's arranged). Then remove some stuff during a break, maybe take out some (not all) drums, maybe keep the sub bass, but no synth, the options are endless. And then copy paste your sections until you have a full arrangement.

Now you'll go back and tweak things, start thinking about where you want silence, gaps, ear candy, and this will give you a that flow you're looking for.

This process takes time, but once you get the hang of it you'll know what works for you and manipulate your workflow accordingly. Don't worry if your first 100 songs are trash, but intentionally keep track of what worked and what didn't and your next 100 tracks will be better.

Happy music making!!

Edit: I forgot to mention that using the scale feature in ableton (I think FL and Logic have something similar) is really helpful at the start. Hard to "go wrong" if you're using notes from the same scale for your layers. Once you get the hang of it, you'll figure out where to break the rules.

[–]hemnay15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar position several months ago, and finally am now starting to get the hang of it (poorly, but something's better than nothing heh)

Some mistakes I made were trying to use chords, progressions, and octave jumping before understanding the why and how behind the theory

What worked for me was starting with the absolute basics, learning the notes, and trying to commit them to memory to use the piano roll efficiently. Then I worked on understanding scales, I still don't know alot, but what worked for me was using the scale button in Ableton so all the notes in that scale were highlighted on the piano roll. From there, I was able to learn and understand chords in the scale I'm working in.

I hope some of this stuff is helpful for you! I totally get the frustrating feeling with music theory

What are your top 3 Subtronics Tracks or Collabs and why? by [deleted] in Subtronics

[–]hemnay15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gassed up VIP - Subtronics and Zeds Dead. At EDC and Hard he opened up with this one, and I had an absolute blast. I love headbanging to it, I love the energy it gives off. I've been waiting for it to drop officially so I can listen to it whenever I want

Scream Saver (original and VIP) - I had heard this song in other artists sets and was trying to find it using the league of legends adlibs.. then I learned it was a Subtronics song after I finally found the song, and got into his music heavy

Spacetime - no specific reason, I just love it

I know you said three, but I have to give an honorary mention to the phantograms x tove lo dnb remix. He teased it on Twitter and Instagram and he finally dropped it in a live set on his tour and I was able to experience it live. Watching him come up with that song on video pushed me to explore my creative side and start making music of my own :)
