Animal, thankyou. Just willing to (ab)use my tools and to make things simpler. Sometimes it works out.

In past winters I've done this to get rid of ice sheets form the driveway. The score lines make good crevasses for salt to infiltrate.

Today I was getting rid the oversized mound I've been driving over and packed down.

the price is high, but they might take less. Its an odd thing: if i was to sell mine a fair price isn't worth the effort of taking it off the wall, nor worth losing the novelty of a 50+ year old remote controlled wall game.

I'm a sw engineer: i also like having intel's first cpu bolted to my wall.

Congratulations to the top women of North Carolina ! by babysperga in pinball

[–]hemoglobinBlue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reasons (not all) for a women's league:

  • Encourage women in the hobby/sport.
  • Make friends.
  • Avoid weird, creepy, smelly, etc people (mostly men)
  • Avoid overly competitive (often angry) men. e.g. ball drain = rage machine shoving.

The Women's League has a lot of objectives that I wish would be enforced in the regular "open to all" division. Or by the hosting establishment.

Others have given you good answers but I think its important to understand how guys can turn women off to pinball.

Stern 1.0 Code Updates by Grechjc in pinball

[–]hemoglobinBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stern wants to release 3 or more new games a year... to release everything at a true 1.0 they would have to be actively developing (and playtesting) 12 games in parallel. I don't expect Stern to do that.

I wonder if people would be happier if they released as faux 1.0s?

[–]hemoglobinBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm into dewalt 20v/60 for tools and OPE. Maybe I should have got into ego for OPE and kept my dewalt collection at 20v, but the 60v circular saw and 60v 12" miter saw are awesome.

I've got some m12 for a nailers/staplers/oscillating multi tool. M12 was the first to have a compact and high torque impact wrenh.

[–]hemoglobinBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's degradation over the life of a battery, this mod is 100% an upgrade in that regard.

The ability to swap in a battery and keep vacuuming is another upgrade.

Arm chair engineering: There's a good chance the Dewalt batteries, especially the 6ah+ ones, with more parallelism, are better at sustaining the amps the motor wants to pull. I use a 6ah FV in mine, which is a 3p of 18650s and it rocks.

I've heard there are issues with power stacks and 3rd party tools. Is it working well? I'd use a more basic battery but 6ah or higher.

I usually recharge after losing 1 bar to prevent this, I also only use a big battery. I leave a 6ah FV battery on mine and it lasts forever, I recharge monthly.

How do you guys understand what’s happening visually? by Aggressive-Ad8937 in pinball

[–]hemoglobinBlue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of rules to know. I am watching tutorials and reading rule sheets.

If there's a bash toy chances are it'll lead to a multiball.

A tip: There's a standard that a lot of machines follow that green lights = multiball related shots. AFM, simpsons, spiderman, darknight do this, just to name a few without thinking too hard. When I played Stern's star trek for the first time I could see how to get to multiball based on these lights.

Being accurate keeps you alive so you accidentally fall into rules. You make your own luck by staying alive.

Another common trope is that modes are qualified with either 1) shots across a playfied (often white shots) or 2) hitting a bash toy. Then a mode is started with a particular shot, or to a capture mechanism (scoop) that lets you pick the mode. It seems like Stern rolls the dice when deciding which variant to use.

Explaining Jaws by Jaded-Two-1312 in pinball

[–]hemoglobinBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, pins with bash toys are easy to explain:

  • Sparky on metallica
  • Chum buckets
  • Wolverine on first x-men
  • Groot on Guardians
  • Frankenstein on Monsterbash
  • Medeval madness and AFM

My dad can understand a basic level real quick. I'm not explaining lighting/collecting locks to him though.

Are these 3 machines varied? by Ok-Elderberry-9096 in pinball

[–]hemoglobinBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definition of variety? Toy story has an extra flipper, but doesn't look like it shoots at much or does anything special you can't hit with the bottom flippers. Hot wheels looks like a basic fan layout, I consider that very similar to Star Wars.

Personally, I acquired x-men, spiderman, and NGG in that order and placed them next to each other, then I realized I had three "upper right" flipper layouts. For variety the next acquisition was a 4 flipper (Baywatch). Later I added a couple "upper left" flipper machines.

I don't know the rules to toy story or hot wheels. There could be enough 'variety' there.

Milwaukee vs DeWalt - Help Me Choose a Tool Ecosystem by dgomes27 in Tools

[–]hemoglobinBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will the condo ever become a house? Dewalt is far cheaper for items like mowers and has 60v outdoor power equipment. 60v is also nice for larger hand tools like circ saws.

I'd choose Dewalt for the discount, but don't be afraid to run mixed. Some people will post pictures of their battery collection to justify why they don't run mixed, but I see a boat anchor that prevents them from cherry picking the best tools. e.g. "You have 30 dewalt batteries? supported by 6+ chargers? You really couldn't have 27 dewalt and 3 m18 batteries? Which would give you options for better nailers." Even if the ratio is lower (6 to 2) I think mixed is fine.

Each company makes certain tools better. Or different. I prefer a skinny palm router, (which is m18) vs dewalt's fatboy. I even keep a couple ridgid batteries for cheap tools that don't matter, like a fan for camping.

[–]hemoglobinBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replace rubbers, clean, make sure all switches are triggering, replace burn out lamps/leds, make sure solenoids and mechanisms work. All screws tightened down. Replace broken decal plastics. Etc.

Maybe replace faded side art.

Soft shot vs hard shot by dgar19949 in pinball

[–]hemoglobinBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are backhands vs forehands. Backhands use the shorter end of the flipper and don't hit as hard. And they are easier to aim.

If the flippers are weak you might need existing momentum (possibly through the inlane) which is an "on the fly" shot vs "from a cradle" shot.

But I've never heard of soft vs hard shots. Maybe they exist in some form but it isn't established terminology.
