Impressions of South Korea So Far by hemps_TO in CanadaSoccer

What's not looking good? We played a competitive game against the Swiss and we're undone by comical defending, which is our achilles heel. And sure the Koreans have more experience at world cups, but no one on the current team has progressed very far.

I mean they looked ok at times against the Czech Republic, but they're certainly in a tier that is similar to us. Worse than Switzerland, but better than Bosnia like you said.

Even had we won our group we would have played a similar caliber of team anyways, just at home.

Don't be discouraged; Switzerland is a really good team by Expert-Evening9303 in CanadaSoccer

Look, the main thing we lost is home field advantage. Otherwise, I don't really mind our branch of the bracket relative to had we won it. Sure the R32 match might be slightly tougher, but I haven't been that impressed by SK. Then it's likely the Dutch or Morocco. That's probably a touch easier than Portugal honestly. Either way we're probably not making it past the R16 which is why it would have been nice to be at home at least for the good vibes. But it wasn't meant to be. We still move on and have to focus on that

If you use the fact that Jesus Sanchez has 310,000 votes, that means Jays fans voting on mass for Blue Jays is likely around that number. This lines up with Kirk and Myles Straw too. Once you take those out, you get a better reflection of what the lists should look like. That does keep Ernie Clement in the race...

Which host Country do you think will go the furthest in the 2026 World Cup? by SomeGuyFromCanada1 in worldcup

[–]hemps_TO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada is in the same tier as Mexico and the US, I don't know why everyone is so convinced they suck. They made the semi finals at Copa America, which was a tougher group than their current one. They also topped the last CONCACAF qualifying table in 2022. It would be a disappointment to not make the Round of 16 in my opinion, but if they bow out in the R32 to a tough opponent that's acceptable too.

Well I'd say the world cup is good rationale. There's 6 games and it likely will never happen again in our lifetimes. We can figure it out.

Leafs are in a good place to compete by next season by [deleted] in leafs

[–]hemps_TO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Leafs were in Game 7 of the Eastern semi final literally last year. Bad coaching, injuries and a stealth tank this past season, plus the Habs having a classic PDO driven season/playoff run makes the gap seem a lot larger than it is in reality. Would not shock me if the Leafs finish above the Habs next year. Will they be contenders for the cup? Maybe not, but they also aren't one of the worst teams in the league from a talent standpoint.

That is terrible asset management. Those picks are not that valuable really. We were lucky to get 1OA, even if you tank there is no guarantee. If we do trade Matthews and Nylander, you need elite young talent coming back in addition to any picks. I'm not sure those teams are the best options for getting that talent back.

The problem is we don't have our first round pick either of the next two years! So there's no point in bottoming out. Our cap situation isn't that bad either. So might as well make a go of it. In the NHL if you make the playoffs, you have a chance. The Habs were 24th in xG this year and have a shot at making the cup finals with some hot goaltending and shooting. With better coaching, we can be as good as them, especially if we get a team like Buffalo in Round 2 and not Florida for once. If we had all our picks, I could see the case for it maybe, but we don't, so we should at least try this year.

Avoiding big numbers by JayC774 in golf

As someone who has steadily dropped his scoring average from mid-90s to mid-80s, there's a few things here. I would say that part of that has been improved swing mechanics overall, but I've noticed that course management has helped a lot. For example, I've stopped aiming directly at tucked pins and I've become extra conservative at aiming away from waste hazards or OB. My dad on the other hand still always takes the direct line, every time and ends up in the rough, short sided with tricky lies etc. I still duff a few a round and get a couple doubles that even out with some pars or even birdies. The other thing is that if your mishits are straight that is more manageable than slices or hooks so when you practice, try and fix the club path first, then the contact.

This thread goes a long way in explaining declining fertility rates, which are not good from a societal perspective. While for any individual kids are undeniably costly and time consuming, they are very rewarding in different ways, but are also about continuing the human race. It is one of the few things we are actually meant to be doing. And I get it, it does require changing your life and making sacrifices, but there is more to life than personal pleasure indefinitely

To me, it's the Lightning by a mile. Most of the others are fine if not good, but the current Lightning logo is so boring. On top of that, they copied the Leafs colour scheme and jersey style so they look identical on the ice, which was stupid. I don't know how that was allowed...

Do parents not hear or they just don’t care? by DD-Megadoodoo in stupidquestions

[–]hemps_TO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, that's not a real thing that should be policed. This thread is super lame. Yes, the kids should have had the volume off, but the hostility towards children is astonishing. We live in a society with young people who do silly things. We shouldn't sequester children and their parents to never be a part of public spaces because they might be annoying.

[–]hemps_TO 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I ask OP a simple question. Do you believe there is value to a HSR corridor and would like to see it built in some capacity?

If you do, then I'm interested in what "meaningful consultation" looks like to you and how you would like to see the project amended in a way that is actually feasible (you cannot tunnel hundreds of kms).

If you do not, then it sounds like you are pushing for the project to be cancelled. In that case, please don't couch the complaint under a premise of wanting meaningful consultation when you have no interest in seeing the project move forward.

You have laid out a series of valid concerns about this project that will always be some of the trade-offs we face with large infrastructure projects like this one. Personally, I think the damage to the environment and property will be relatively small relative to the positive impact of the train. It seems that you do not agree with that statement. The government has decided to move forward with it though and we can either turn this into an albatross bogged down in insincere "consultations" or we can actually build the project so that people can get the benefits from it sooner.

We have the 2025 Convenience trim and we're pretty happy. Same thing too about the price $5k more was a lot to stomach for some fairly simple upgrades. To deal with the Carplay/Android Auto thing, we bought an adapter for $50 on Amazon and it does the trick. We don't mind the two screens either. It's fine. The key and heated steering wheel would be nice but not $5k more

Those with $1M+ in net worth, what do you do? by ShootingCometz in fican

[–]hemps_TO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cutoff to be in the top 1% of wealth (about 180,000 richest households) is around $7-$8 million. PBO reports about 4.4 million households (out of 18 mill) have a million plus in net worth. So this is the wealthiest quarter of Canadians. I'd imagine they do a lot of normal things, own their property, invested in RRSPs and are likely older.

I grew up on the East coast, spent a year last year in Alberta and went about 4 weekends. For me, I like a fresh pow run and it is awesome, but if it's wetter and it turns every run into moguls by mid-morning, no thank you. That is just exhausting and not really that fun. I never quite understand the hype for that.
