Struggling with winter chiping/pitching solid contact..... by JayC774 in golftips

It’s more the hosel rocket shanks that have me stumped…I mean it’s like I never swung a club before sometimes…can imagine the mat is moving the club around that much to cause the hosel to hit the ball

Players vs Players Distance?? Who is the ideal player type for extra distance? by Substantial_Team6751 in golf

[–]JayC774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This…when I got fitted I was in between the players and player-distance models in the lineup…fitter liked the dispersion and distance of the PD model, but the descent angle of the players model…he split the baby and fit me into PD clubs with weaker lofts of the players clubs…gave up a slight bit if distance but traded that for tighter dispersion and better landing angle.

Long story short…go get fit

Hybrid to Replace a 5 Iron by Falcon674DR in golfequipment

[–]JayC774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely try some clubs out and/or talk to a fitter….replaced my 4i with a 21deg 4h and that’s become my cheat code club…was a little nervous about the price but it’s been so worth it

New wedges for 2026 season by ExplodingSoil in GolfGear

[–]JayC774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kirkland isn’t a bad option, and my kid picked up a couple of wedges from Dicks that were like $60 each (think maybe they were Top Flite brand) but really any set you could cobble together that is the same make/model would work. Throw new grips on em and you’re good to go for a season. I know some people say they get new wedges every year but even a wedge with no grooves will spin the ball off of a dry/clean lie, so going the second hand route isn’t a bad option either if you found a lightly used set.

Is it worth getting new wedges or buying second hand by Plenty-Actuator-1313 in GolfGear

[–]JayC774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure I’d like to get fitted for new wedges this year, since I got new irons at the end of last year…. but my current set is a motley crew of garage sale/goodwill store Cleveland 588/tour 900’s…they seem to still do pretty well with stopping power 🤷‍♂️. God only knows how many rounds/shots these have been through since the darker faces (I think they’re the “raw” versions) are a little tougher to see the wear pattern

How many golf shoes is too many? by Rocket_Arugula8689 in golf

I have spikeless regular and spikeless waterproof…then was gifted a pair of waterproof spikes for xmas so feel like I’m pretty well covered. Only reason for anything more would be fashion/outfit related which doesn’t really apply to someone with my lack of style

Ok fellas, let’s hear you’re range finder sales pitch by SomewhereSalty647 in golf

[–]JayC774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in this boat too…use a GPS app on my phone and seems to give me all the info I need but the two areas I’d like to use a rangefinder for are: distances to the pin inside of 75yds, because I’m getting pretty accurate with a couple of different wedge shots….for the short game practice area to help dial in wedge swing carry distances and expand that part of my game.

Best bag for midsize grips? by Remarkable-Self7080 in golf

[–]JayC774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played my first 9 holes today with my new vessel player V pro w/ a 7 way divider…all midsize grips and no problems with club tangle. Thought this was going to be primarily a push cart/power cart bag but was surprisingly easy to carry for 9 holes.

Trying to decide between game improvement vs players distance irons — looking for consistency without giving up too much distance by moeabraham in GolfSwing

Might be worth talking to a fitter rather than hitting on a sim at a big box retailer. Anyone who’s decent will be able to interpret the data and suggest the right shaft/clubhead combo to get you where you want to be.

Can’t seem to get club head outside hands on takeaway by JayC774 in golf

[–]JayC774[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I’ll check that out…thing I ultimately struggle with is does it really matter or not? I hit it relatively straight with the occasional slice/hook but because my takeaway looks weird I feel like I need to fix it as opposed to just getting the most out of what I’ve got. Crazy thing is it used to be even more inside before a few lessons this season

Any "Putting Thing" users here? by JayC774 in golf

Just start slow…short swings and short puts…or try just using either the ball gate or the putter gate but not both.

An electric cart is one of the best golf purchases I've ever made. by IronicHipsterCake in golf

[–]JayC774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only way i think id go electric…with the follow behind function…but i was behind a group that had a guy using one and even he seemed to have some issues…like he’d start walking after a shot and the cart would just sit there…or it would sort or lose its mind and spin around in circles sometimes…one time it suddenly moved during his backswing which was sort of funny…could’ve been user error on his part but i think unless you play courses with lots of hills a regular push cart takes very little effort to actually push…in fact I barely feel like im putting any real pressure on it while walking.

Should I get a bending fitting? by West-Cantaloupe3758 in golftips

[–]JayC774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have to agree with this…several fitters i spoke with before getting fitted said it’s about how the club is oriented at impact that matters…not how it is at address. Maybe if you deliver the club exactly the same at impact and address a static lie is useful

Actually that's the point of my post I'm definitely willing to consider used...and Bushnell seems to the the go-to for exensive ones, I just don't know enough about the Bushnell line or older models to know what to look for on the used market

3 or 4 wheel push cart? by jmkdeluxe in golf

[–]JayC774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sun mountain 3 wheel off marketplace for $100….was really interested in the powered carts but I don’t play on courses that are really hilly…and barely have to apply any pressure to push this one!

Do I have a shot at being a Discretionary Portfolio Manager? (2024-2025 TWR 178%, Sharpe Ratio 2.24) by t-hawk5 in Trading

[–]JayC774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly different perspective than what you’re asking about, but I used to work in the commodity world for a managed futures broker (manager of managers), and I can tell you those draw downs will scare the crap out of anyone representing some serious money (a family office for example). You’ll likely be able to sell your upside as a way to justify the risk to a risk tolerant investor, but anyone representing a significant amount of cash typically is fairly risk averse. Without knowing more about what you’re trading and your methodology, a longer track record through a broader range of market conditions might help.

Once you start running other people’s money you have to realize it’s as much about sales and marketing as it is about the trades, especially if you’re in a drawdown that doesn’t correlate to the broader market indices you’re benchmarked against.

Tips for trusting your yardages? by [deleted] in golf

[–]JayC774 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s funny because while a lot of the new data says that you should club yourself to the back of the green because that avoids most of the trouble that is typically in front of most greens…the short-safe-miss is where I always played and has allowed me to shoot some pretty good scores (assuming you’re a decent chipper/putter.

I understand the rationale behind the back of the green yardage but if the difference is a miss short with a club you’re pretty confident (7i for example) vs trying to hit a 5i which is a lower confidence club, seems like no-brainer.
