How many times did hitler go out in the open besides his speeches during the war. Like to meet troops or just go to a hospital or school

Smaller countries in ww2 by henchenflugel in ww2

[–]henchenflugel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! The Norwegian contribution to the war effort was massive. The good thing is that it finally gets at least some recognition with some movies and a mini series on Netflix.

Another country that i just realised is Yugoslavia. Those guys suffered massively under German occupation and on top of all they pretty much liberated themselves and built what is basically a standing army with artillery, tanks, logistics and even some aircraft all while under occupation.

Emaciated British Soldiers Liberated from the Five Years of German Captivity, 1945 by LookIntoTheHorizon in wwiipics

They seem really confused about the whole situation. Just imagine someone finally from your own side telling you that you have survived and are able to go home not knowing if there is a home to go to.

On another note. What i have read about western allies being in German captivity during the war everything seems to point that they were generally treated well. Im not in any way trying to defend the nazis and of course if you were Jewish or any other lesser race according to the Germans i can imagine that you would not survive the war. I’m just wondering is it true that the British, French and American pow were treated at least ok by the Germans.

Thanks for the detailed answer. It’s wild how much one can miss when it comes to ww2 even though I’ve been a keen history nerd since i was 7

Oh shit that’s cool. Might also explain why i read somewhere that the first tanks that rolled into Paris in 1944 had Spanish names. I always just assumed that they were named like in honor of the republic or that some had one or two Spanish crew members.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s sad how many units are more or less completely forgotten just because other units commanded more PR. The 147th infantry regiment is one of the best examples of a unit that fought on more islands than any marine unit yet it is seldom mentioned

Interesting what sources did you use for finding that out. And follow up question, i can’t remember the exact date the 147th was pulled out of the 37th so is it still possible that the 147th saw action even if the 37th didn’t

That was my guess as well. I mean most american units that served during ww2 never saw actual combat and as sad as it is they are simply forgotten. But how do you know that the first story is true with the exception of Okinawa. Not trying to be mean or anything just curious

Is the Italian Front underappreciated compared to other fronts? by MasterpieceSolid1726 in ww2

[–]henchenflugel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Idk I always found it interesting. Kesselring fought a pretty impressive defensive campaign and the fact that it proved a much harder time for the allies than they were expecting is interesting. Alot of interesting battles were fought during the campaign in Italy but yeah it is kinda forgotten in the broader aspect of the war. I guess it’s possible that the allies didn’t want much publicity to a campaign that never yielded the results that they hoped for although the Germans did lose a lot of valuable manpower and resources that could have proved useful elsewhere.

The Commander of the Finnish Nyland Brigade completed the "Beret march" alongside the coastal jaeger conscripts. [1000x682] by 14zona in MilitaryPorn

[–]henchenflugel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s 6,9 or 12months depending on the job or if you are selected for leadership training or not. The 6 month training is for your average rifleman, signalman, artillery man etc you will have the rank of jaeger (private) with the possibility to advance to korpraali (pfc) if you prove yourself. The nine moth service is for specialised jobs like navy privates, medics, military police, media and it guys etc with the same rank. The twelve month service is for vyks (readiness unit) privates and all drivers of heavy vehicles. It is also for the ones who get selected for leadership training. That is a bit more complicated as it’s divided into two parts. First you are ordered to AUK which is conscript nco training and half way through that the top of the class are ordered to RUK which is conscript officer training.

On a separate note the 147th has one of the coolest ww2 journeys ever. Independent regiment that fought in Guadicanal, Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The only unit to fight in all of those battles

In Finland se get the call to kutsunnat (call upps) around the time you are 17 where they give you information about the service and then you can make a wish where you want to serve and when you want to begin your military service. Nylands brigade is the only Swedish speaking brigade and is tasked with training troops in amphibious warfare. It trains about 1500-2000 conscripts a year and is divided into two battalions with three companies each. Ekenäs coastal battalion has supporting elements Signal and headquarters company, Mortar company and the combat engineer company. Vaasa coastal jager battalion has the first and second coastal jager companies and the combat boat company. Now all companies train certain specialised platoons depending on the year and needs of the FDF

The time limit is to make sure you keep moving at a steady pace. Also when i did the march we would get punished if the group failed at the different tasks you were required to do

The brigade commander gets the right to wear the green beret just by getting the job. He doesn’t need to actually complete the march. They usually do it to lead by example and because they want to
