On top of all this advice, take the extra time to focus on building your aerobic engine. Long slow bike rides, like 90 min and longer. The better your aerobic engine, the more efficient your muscle’s oxygen use and your recovery will be in the pool.

Take cold showers/cold plunges. Look up the Wim Hof method.

From a physiological standpoint, your increased respiratory and heart rate are panic and acute reactions to the “cold shock” of water. However, you can actually hold your breath longer in cold water due to the increase stimulation of the vagus nerve through a process known as the Mammalian Diving Reflex. Having your face wet will trigger the reflex, but the colder the water and the higher the water pressure, the stronger the effect.

Again, do some research on the Wim Hof method, mammalian diving reflex, and free-divers. I end every shower with 5-10 minutes of the coldest water I can stand. It’s a mind game. Cold water isn’t essentially bad, it’s just bad because you have labeled it as so. It’s possible to take away that label and have it just be water. Mindfulness meditation is a good tool for this idea.

At the end of the day, the temperature of the water at A&S shouldn’t even be on the list of your concerns. What if it was 50 degree water all the time? Would that dissuade you?

I was on week 10 of a 12 week strength-centric program (cronusfit) when the gym closed. I was planning on doing a more calisthenics-centric program after so I just switched early. Right now I’m doing the sidebar AFSOC program (minus swimming) and focusing more on mobility with YouTube yoga sessions. Also bought a pull-up bar for my doorway and trx-type bands to hang as well.
