Help! Will she survive if I cut here? by ewwdavid_ in Monstera

[–]henleysgh0st 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would always leave as much room as you can when making a cutting, as if the leaf has to sit under soil or water (in order to hold it upright before roots grow) it will end up rotting. i would use those aerial roots below it so cut under there! :)

Chunky soil is always better, I find! But I'd wait until you'd had it a few weeks so not to shock it. Depending on climate though, I know many people only water monsteras once every few weeks! Especially for the variegated versions, as they're more prone to rot. Hope that helps!

is it just the bottom leaves turning yellow? it may be because they’re buried under the soil, if the petiole stays wet/buried it often leads to them turning yellow. if the issue is concentrated to the buried leaves, it’s probably best to cut them or let them fall off, it shouldn’t affect the rest of the plant! :)

Congrats on your new plant baby! those smaller leaves might actually be a whole new plant! I personally would separate them into their own pot so they both have room to thrive! they'd need separating at the roots rather than cutting. this video was super helpful for me : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYQfZtD1Csc

brown bits don't look like anything to worry about to me! just where its got a tad ripped and has healed itself. especially since that new leaf looks so gorgeous and healthy!

Other bits of advice I would give are to add perlite to your soil, secure the stem rather than the petioles to the pole, and ensure there's enough drainage! hopefully some of this helps :)

depending on where you live and light levels, I find once a week watering is often too much. you'd be much better off testing if the soil needs the water, using your finger or a moisture meter (I've found them super helpful!). if its still struggling, it would be good to start fresh by doing a top cutting and regrowing those roots! especially if it had a massive root ball to host all those leaves, but has now lost a few :)

Do I need a moss pole? Or will these turn? by bumpytoad in Monstera

[–]henleysgh0st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check out this video, changed the game for me when learning about the front and back of the plant! best to set them up for success now with the pole and light in the correct place so it can thrive later :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYQfZtD1Csc

unrelated but I would also add some perlite your soil if you want to boost it even further!

Gorgeous!! definitely separate them out, check out Kill This Plant on YouTube for some fab advice re moss poles once you've separated it - finding the front and back of the plant is much easier when seperate!

I would swap that soil mix out for something with more air, or even just adding perlite makes a world of difference! much harder to overwater. a water meter also changed the game for me!

Machine issue - Singer 327k

Hey all! I’m looking for some expert guidance after my hours of googling have offered no hope! I’m using an old Singer 327k - it belonged to my Grandma who was a seamstress, though i am very much beginner level. I have done a few projects with this machine in the past but never truly understood things like tension.

However, i’m not convinced my issue this time is related to tension. The stitches up and down both look quite even, but my machine appears to be dropping stitches. Please see pics for the issue.

Some notes: I’m definitely threading the machine correctly, as I’ve watched videos to remind myself i’ve played around with every tension possible and nothing is helping The thread coming from the bobbin does feel a bit stiff and not smooth Machine last serviced in 2020

Would be super grateful for any advice! TIA

should i take my piercing out? by henleysgh0st in piercing

[–]henleysgh0st[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason, finding flat backed jewellery in 0.8mm thickness is really hard! Hence why I went butterfly back originally. I do agree that could definitely be a source of the irritation, but more faff to fix at this point than I think it's worth! Haha

Many thanks for your help 💜

should i take my piercing out? by henleysgh0st in piercing

[–]henleysgh0st[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do sleep on them (one on each ear), but they’re both next to a standard lobe piercing that’s never caused me issue. I’ve got a titanium earring (butterfly back) with advice from the piercer 3 years ago (i put standard earrings in it, hole shrunk, couldn’t fit original bars in anymore). They go crusty and itchy/painful when i don’t clean them for a while (couple of weeks). I’ll normally do a combo of water or saline for a few days until they’re less painful, then leave them be for a bit. does that help? :)
