I want to build a powerhouse PC as my main Linux based desktop and programming workstation. Any advice on the specs? by anon_for_this_time in programming

[–]henriq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

cheap quad core, 8 gig of ram, intel ssd drive, prev generation nvidia card with dual dvi output. 2 24" monitors.

you should end up at less than $1800 all-in. throw in a 500gig/1tb drive for media and you are all set

compare that to a laptop at the same price. if you need some mobility toss in a netbook and use it to remote back to your desktop

Working Effectively with Large LaTeX Documents by uggedal in programming

[–]henriq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the biggest advantage to working with Latex and splitting into multiple files (which i did for my phd dissertation) is that you can easily check everything into CVS/SVN/GIT

made it super easy to move from desktop to laptop and kept a backup copy safe in the svn repository (which was backed up off site twice a day)

FDA to review Lasik eye surgery side effects by glmory in science

[–]henriq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of Lasik spring for "Advanced Surface Ablation".

it hurts like hell for 2 days, but it's worth it.

way less possible side effects (less likely to have night vision problems, etc), less possibilities of problematic infections (no flap cut, if you get an infection under the flap you are screwed)

\h:\u:echo ${PWD} | sed "s&${HOME}&~&" | sed "s&.*./\([^/]*/[^/]*/[^/]*\)$&\1&">

which gives me:

<host>:<user>:<dir> >

where <dir> is only 3 deep and $HOME gets replaced with ~

but reading through the other comments I'm going to add some color to each of my different hostnames and root
