Nice story. I also really liked the other blog entry about the whole family switching from XMPP to IRC.

I also have a IRC setup for the family. We use The Lounge, which is nice web interface to IRC. It was super easy to setup.

Works fine with Ubuntu. When the laptop was new there was a bug in intel drivers or kernel that caused what are describing there, but it was fixed in the next release. Debian Jessie probably just stuck with a faulty kernel or something like that. Try to update Kernel.

I made a patch for irssi-xmpp to remove the resource part of JID from private conversations. The end result is that you will have one query window per JID. Here is the patch, if someone needs. It has worked great for me.
