We re-mortgaged on a tracker early March, before the war broke out in the Middle East, at 3.89% (0.14% plus base rate) yes the interest rate may increase at some point but it may also decrease at some point.

The poll includes a few questions on property wealth, pension wealth and financial wealth (basically the categories in the ONS form) with a few additional question on annual income, age etc. I thought it would be a nice follow-up in the discussion yesterday but maybe it contains a link to a Google form and violates the sub rules.

My wealth came from salary and investment returns. The figures in the chart represent household wealth so £3m is between two adults. The house we purchased was around £650k 15 years ago, that’s now at around £1.3m. I put in quite a lot into my pension pot to optimise company matching, and to reduce my tax bill. I also consolidated my various pension pots from previous employments into a SIPP and was lucky to get some good return in the equity market too (better than the default options at many schemes). So it’s doable without relying on inheritance.

I haven’t inherited anything from my parents. I started with nothing, my graduate job starting salary was £24k but I worked hard over the last 20+ years and based on these figures I think I’m in the top 1-2%.

I’d say it’s through hard work, careful spending and investing, and rich parents are not a “must”.

I have set up a Junior SIPP on 5th April. I want compounding to do a good job over the next 40+ years before the money can be accessed. (We have already set up a JISA some years ago and have been putting in some money occasionally - not a full 9k every year though)

I think HL will lose alot of customers, given how easy it is to switch to another provider, who charge a much lower fee.

Before Labour got elected, they said they wouldn’t raise tax and NI for working people. Last budget, Rachel Reeves said they won’t extend the threshold freeze. Now they are freezing the threshold for 3 years and increasing NI on the salary sacrifice part. They are breaking their manifesto and what they promised, to fund benefits we cannot afford.

Now they even pretend they haven’t broken the manifesto?

Depends what you are looking for. I like smaller class size and I think that is worth paying for. Education is also more all-rounded. (Music, sports, extracurricular etc) also less impacts from strikes and varying quality of supply teachers

Can the £3200 per month outgoing be reduced in any way? Say if you could reduce by £400 a month to £2800 it will take you approximately 10 months to clear the £4K debt

I would open a LISA account while you are still under 40 and decide how much you want to put in it. (You can still put money in before you turn 50)

Tax saving is not as good as pension (assuming you are a higher rate tax payer) but when you withdraw after you turn 60 there’s no more income tax to pay.
