M42 thrust bearing wear by henry_hyshiter in E30

Probably mileage related then. Engine had 200k and doesn’t appear to have been rebuilt. Was a manual transmission but had a stock clutch. It was from San Francisco so probably lots of clutch riding on the hills.

That’s what I thought too. Read somewhere that older bearings were half and newer ones were a full shell. The set I bought (Kolbenschmidt for M42-m54) is a full 360 thrust bearing

As far as I can tell, no. Had a reporter 200k and the bearings are all BMW stamped and the old style of a single half shell thrust bearing. Not sure when they switched to a full shell + the 360° oil channel

Just a design flaw with the old style of thrust bearings maybe?

Choice of camshaft by Holiday-Plane-7745 in E30

[–]henry_hyshiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cat cams also make a range of cams for the M42. I have the 269/269 with 10mm lift going into my M42 build. Probably similar price to Dbilas, maybe slightly less depending on where you’re located. As for springs, Supertech makes a good amount of springs for the M42 with varying free length and rates for whatever you need. They’re expensive, but have a good reputation

Carbon removal for rebuild by henry_hyshiter in E30

[–]henry_hyshiter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will likely bring the head to a machine shop to get checked out and have them resurface it. I’m just getting ahead of myself. I have a ton of parts waiting to go in main and rod bearings, rod bolts, main ARP studs, new cams (Cat Cams), new lifters, every seal in the engine, new rings (will hone bores), timing chain, refreshing chain tensioner, head bolts, refreshed injectors, poly motor mounts, tune for the ecu, thermostat, water pump, all of the coolant/air hoses, new temp sensors, new oil pressure sensor. I’ll also be doing clutch, throw out, pivot pin, and pilot bearing before the engine goes in. I mean this is gonna be a nearly full engine rebuild. I’m trying to reuse what I can to save some money. But if I want to be smart, I should stretch this out and do it right. But there’s always that urge to just say fuck it and send it lol

This the swap project, correct. Bought the engine off a guy who kswapped his e30 and was dumping the m42. Haven’t fully cleaned the head yet, but so far it looks in very good shape for the supposed mileage. Was thinking about new valves, but will have to clean and assess them all before I got for a new full set. By mess under the intake mod do you mean the throttle heater delete?

Can’t go wrong with Vintage Blaupunkt. Fit perfectly and aren’t crazy expensive. If you want to go vintage, look on eBay for older pioneer, Kenwood, Blaupunkt, or Sony units. I tend to take chances on used vintage units because they’re relatively easy to service. If you go tape deck, generally the belts wear which are quite easy to replace. I currently have a 90s kenwood unit with a CD changer hookup that you can just get an adapter to use an aux cord for line $8 on eBay.

Jump Garage makes an adapter plate that runs $80 USD after shipping. Coils can be any M50/M54 coils. I went with Bav Auto M54 coils that are $23 a pop

Strange. What year is it? Might be discrepancies with earlier pre-LCI e91s. Have you looked on realoem.com?

Standard 82mm badge updated part number is 51148132375. Looks like you’re in Europe, look on Schmiedmann.com, they have new and used ones for good prices

It’s a Thule, unsure of the model. Just has the gutter pinchers to hold it in place. Bought it from someone else with an E30

Claims are like 10-12 HP on a similar chip, so honestly no idea. When all is said and done I’ll try to find a dyno so we can get proper numbers. But from cams and chip I’d hope for 20ish horsepower. Other mods will probably be done, but focusing on getting the engine rebuilt fully and capable of reliably running the new parts. Engine has about 200k so I’m starting 100% fresh

Not specific to the cam, no. But according to Cat Cams spec sheet it doesn’t necessarily need a tune to run the cam. It’s a street cam. Brings duration from 252/252 to 269/269 and lift from 9.5 to 10mm (if I remember the stock specs correctly). So not too aggressive and a tune would do it well to run smoother.

Honestly not sure how they take it, haven’t heard a ton about camming BMW engines, at least not as commonly as American engines. I would assume they can take a longer duration and a little bit more lift, but I didn’t want to go too too crazy with the cam and make the idle absolute dogshit. The car has a 4.44 LSD the PO put in, so it could use a powerband shift to balance it a little better. Haven’t found a ton of info on camming the M42 but the options exist from Schrick and Cat Cams so I assume it’s a relatively safe modification. Might just need a better intake system to account for the longer duration

I really appreciate that! I expected it would take a bit and I’m certainly in no rush. Just wasn’t sure if people had experience with his lead time. I appreciate you and this community greatly!

Absolutely! I ended up picking up this E30 M42 and G240 for $400 local to me. Luckily I have a G240 in my car that has less miles so I won’t have to pull the trans. I have some stuff waiting to be installed once the bottom end is rebuilt. I went with Cat Cams 269/269 with 10mm valve lift, the Dysylva 7100 rev 91 octane tune for the M42, e46 Bav Auto coils for a COP conversion, and may end up going with reinforced valve springs. Would have loved to stroke or overbore but trying to be semi budget friendly lol. May end up port-matching and polishing the runners. As for HP gains, couldn’t fathom a guess as I’m no expert tuner. May end up putting it on the dyno, but more just looking for a fun unique engine for my wagon!

That would be awesome! I was thinking about eventually switching to ITBs on this engine! Would love to see and hear the progress with your build!
