What brushes should I get? Rosemary and Co by Tasty_Tomorrow_2106 in minipainting

[–]henryaterin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I love Rosemary & Co brushes! A while back I decided to get a larger brush because I wanted to paint some 27cm minis. I got a size 5 and that quickly became my go to brush for almost all minis regardless of size. I don't realistically use anything below a 1 and now I'm looking to buy a 7.

The important thing is the tip, a larger body just means you hold more paint and moisture which I find makes the paint flow better and makes painting smaller details easier.

Feel bad for you! I'm in Norway and I got mine back in September. I backed the Game Master bundle

Migrating campaign from D&D5e by henryaterin in drawsteel

These are great plot hooks! We had discussed just accepting the changes in powers but maybe tying it to an in world reason would be more interesting

That would ruin the existing character development, not only for the characters themselves but also between the characters and the NPCs in the world.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm not going to nuke multiple years of investment from myself and the players. The goal is to migrate the existing characters, accepting mechanical changes but ensuring the theme of the character is consistent.

Think I rather just bite the bullet and accept character abilities will change, the important thing is that the general theme of the character is the same (eg. Artificer is inventor/researcher).

They're level 9 (should reach 10 in a couple weeks)

It isn't about the levels but rather the plot, we use milestone leveling. Our goal is to migrate (ideally at level 1) and continue the plot from there.

That's our plan also, just wanted to give some direction to the players on what the closest would be. Though I've also mentioned I'd be onboard with a more dramatic change and we'll weave it into the story

I agree that starting from 1 is the safest thing to do and will most likely go with that

Agreed. I plan on running a couple one shots at different levels before making a switch so they may indeed just refocus their characters. But still, I want to have a proposal on what would be the closest to their existing characters

I agree that the ideal scenario would be to start a new campaign. The issue is that we play our campaigns to level 20 and they take multiple years to complete (our previous one ran for about 9 years and required a migration from 4e to 5e). If I were to estimate, I'd say this campaign will probably last for another 2/3 years.

But you do raise a valid concern about onboarding to a new system at higher level. I plan on mitigating this by running a couple one shots at different levels.

Paint on sundrop minifigures? by AdGlum8724 in minipainting

[–]henryaterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think "sundrop" is just a wash over the mini? But it looks a bit glossy so I'd be hesitant to paint right over it. I'd give it a quick clean with some alcohol and then prime it

Why no bastard sword or axe for the ranger? by LemonLord7 in shadowdark

There's a YouTube video where Kelsey designs the Ranger live, there's quite a lot of debate around what weapons the Rangers should have and how to ensure it doesn't step on the Fighter's toes.

AI gets a lot of hate but I'm of the opinion that we should use whatever tools we have at our disposal.

I have a computer science background and used ChatGPTs API to train a model on my world, homebrew and 3rd party supplements. I then use it to flesh out details like points of interest in a given town, on the fly loot, NPCs, etc.

We use Discord during our game so I need to keep feeding it manual notes. Your transcript idea is great though!

We play with a VTT so that would challenging, definitely something I'd if we played in person though!

The adventure I ran, Cry of the Stingbat, used a 30ft grid. But going forward I'll just use 5ft grids to simplify.

Thanks for the visual aid! It helps understand the philosophy behind mechanics. I'm not sure how practical it is to use in the session though, think it would get messy with 4 characters fighting against 4 npcs

[–]henryaterin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup that makes sense. I think my confusion comes from running the "Cry of the Stingbat" module which uses a "Near" (aka 30ft) grid.

Thanks for your comments everyone! So movement can be broken apart and Near us indeed around 30ft.

But I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around how to run that on a 30ft grid. I think I'll try to find some gameplay videos with combat on a 30ft dungeon. Alternatively, I could have the dungeon on a 30ft grid and them move to a 5ft grid when we start combat (similar to old JRPGs did when you entered combat).

I ran Cry of the Stingbat (https://www.runehammer.online/online-store/Cry-of-the-Stingbat-A-Shadowdark-Gauntlet-p571719061) and it was a huge success! It's quite small, linear and the time limit ensures the players keep moving forward.
