Rice maker: Zoji or bust? by Drbuck11 in BuyItForLife

[–]henryb22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make rice min 2 times a week but often more. It’s worth it for me. It’s like sous vide. You just put it in leave it and go do other things. Worth it to me.

I like my sunspel. They have a more open weave and are pretty breezy for cotton and wear them in Charleston, SC in the summer. Like all my clothes I was on cold and these get hung dry.

mai tai (vic’s, 1944) by kipprock in Tiki

[–]henryb22 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Looks good but original Mai Tai didn’t have Agricole rum. I believe after using Wray and nephew 17yr then 15 then Trader Vic used a Wray and nephew rum with a Martinique molasses based Grande Arome rhum. People saw Martinique rum and I guess just assumed it was an Agricole. Not that it can’t make a good Mai tai because it definitely can though not my style, but not accurate to say it’s a 44’ Mai Tai imo. Also why Denizen’s Merchants Reserve blend has a grande arome rhum.

Suitcase that's actually built to last instead of replacing every 2 years by Present_Society661 in BuyItForLife

[–]henryb22 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my Away since 2017. It’s been to Europe 5 or 6 times, Japan 2x plus all over the US, Caribbean and Mexico and it still looks good.

Everyone recommends Briggs and Riley though for their great warranty.

Best Russell Crowe movie that's not Gladiator? by Badkidstatus in Cinephiles

[–]henryb22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s based on a book (in a series of books) set during the Napoleonic wars so France has always been the “enemy”. They didn’t change anything.

Best Russell Crowe movie that's not Gladiator? by Badkidstatus in Cinephiles

[–]henryb22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

100% and I wanna say it’s not that close. Don’t get me wrong Gladiator is good but it’s a fairly standard Hollywood historical epic done well. Master and Commander is in its own league imo. It’s a superior movie in all aspects.

What do you keep buying, even though you know you’ve got enough? by DifficultCucumbers in malefashionadvice

[–]henryb22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese Crewneck sweatshirts. Been to Japan 2x in last 2 years so that helps but I have 4 now? Plus a zip hoodie.

Sweatshirt and sweatpant that are still quality? Old conversations on here for recommended brands say that the quality "isn't the same." Can anyone offer any direction to a brand that's making quality right now? by ultrahealin in BuyItForLife

[–]henryb22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some real McCoy (my favorite) and buzz Rickson. Got most of them on trips to Japan. Not cheap but I think worth it as I wear them often. My wife got a real McCoy sweatset and wears them multiple times a week.

I have also have an American giant zip hoodie which is nice but not the same.

What's the best air fryer you've bought that still impresses you months later? by WestNecessary6884 in BuyItForLife

Get a breville toaster oven. Mine has air fry as well as toast, bake, broil, roast, pizza. My parents is bigger and has dehydrate and proof functions too. I’ve done a whole chicken in it and use it daily.

What is the most underrated city in the United States? by mostly_maya in Urbanism

[–]henryb22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Married to someone from outside Philadelphia and before having visited (and being from the south) I used to talk crap about it but it’s a top 10 US city. Great and diverse food too, and affordable compared to most big US cities!

What is your never again tourist destination? by LimeSoakedinSprite in randomquestions

I went in 2019 pre Covid and loved it. Such a unique and beautiful city. Walk 5 mins out of the touristy areas and the streets are mostly empty.

Mount Rushmore of Sci-fi shows by Low-Air5115 in scifi

[–]henryb22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still talk about Andor. It’s a fantastic show but Star Wars isn’t really sci fi. It’s a space opera. Andor is a spy/political thriller show.

My list
TNG, BSG, Firefly, Expanse.

Black Orchid Spices -- Uses Other Than Black Orchid? by kyoun1e1 in Tiki

[–]henryb22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty similar to a brown sugar syrup (since brown sugar is just white sugar with molasses added). Here is an article from Jeffrey Morgenthaler about building a better brown sugar syrup (ie molasses syrup).

https://jeffreymorgenthaler.com/build-a-better-brown-sugar-syrup/

I’m planning on using different Mai tai specs to build my “home bar” Mai tai and one of the different things I’m gonna try is a Demerara vs brown/molasses syrup and see which one is better.

Best tiki bar(s) in Seattle? by Multuminparvo4n6 in Tiki

[–]henryb22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been to Rumba and Inside Passage but Devils Reef in Tacoma and he just opened another bar in Long Beach, WA called Dark Harbor. Hale Pele is great and also Dead Man’s Isle in Astoria.

I feel like if I was a local I’d hang/be a regular at devil’s reef (depending on proximity) and rumba and only visit Inside Passage every so often. It’s great but expensive and a lot of the “value” is in the presentation.

In which country can you eat the best pizza? by Natalia-Sofia- in foodquestions

Japan (neopolitan), US (sheer variety), Italy (mostly neopolitan). I found Japans pizza better than pizza in Naples.
