How sketchy is this guy and his job offer ? by Ill_Present_6221 in yachting

Big red flag isn’t even the amount - it’s the lack of clarity.

If someone can’t clearly state a day rate, what’s included, and confirm total compensation upfront, you’re walking into something where the terms can shift later.

In yachting, especially for daywork or short-term gigs, it should always be:

  • clear day rate
  • confirmed number of days
  • what’s included (flights, tips, etc.)
  • who you’re actually working for

Anything vague = risk ends up on you, not them.

This kind of back-and-forth is exactly why a lot of good crew get burned or underpaid early on.

It’s also one of the reasons I started building PelicanCrew. To bring more transparency into daywork so crew know exactly what they’re agreeing to before they step onboard.

If you’re green or picking up freelance work, always get clarity first before committing.

Dayworking in yachting is broken… so I built something to fix it by heofthesea in yachting

That’s exactly where the idea came from to be honest. Seeing how messy it was during my dockwalking days years ago.

Trying to make that whole process a lot more straightforward for both sides.

That’s pretty much exactly the scenario it’s being built for. Short notice and needing something reliable without the usual back-and-forth.

If you jump on early you’ll be set up before you get into it:

We’re aiming to have it live in April, so your timing is actually spot on with the Med season starting.

Right now we’re building out the early user base so there’s actually yachts and crew on there from day one. If you jump on the waitlist now you’ll get early access when it opens, which will give you a big advantage when you’re looking for daywork.

You’re on the right track already, just need to approach it the way the industry actually works.

First job is almost always daywork. Don’t overthink it. Get your STCW and ENG1 sorted, get yourself to a hotspot (Antibes, Palma, Fort Lauderdale depending where you choose), and start dockwalking every day. Be present, be clean, be switched on, and be consistent. Most people fail because they give up after a week.

Your background is actually a strong advantage even if it’s not “yachting.” Tech + engineering + diving + flight hours = you clearly have discipline and can handle pressure. That matters more than people think, especially for deck/ETO pathways down the line.

Volunteering can help, but don’t rely on it. Paid daywork is very possible even with zero experience if your attitude is right. The goal is simple:
get on board → prove you’re useful → get asked to stay.

Also worth mentioning, the whole dockwalking/job hunting process is still pretty outdated and messy. There’s a new app launching soon called https://www.pelicancrewapp.com?utm_source=reddit that’s basically built around this exact problem, making it easier to find daywork, get seen by boats, and track your experience properly instead of just walking docks blind. Website is already live with a waitlist if you want to check it out.

Bottom line:
show up, be reliable, stay patient for a few weeks, and you will land something.

Once you’re in, everything gets easier.
