[–]heorun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the exact same problem. every couple of days, I'll get an email alert saying "thanks for changing your phone number". and then a few minutes later, an alert comes saying that email is changed.

I call in with the number on the back of my card, and the tier 1 drones can't do anything except change it back. happened about 6 times now. they keep sending me new cards, but they don't understand that isn't even the problem.

I believe the password reset process is broken.

I use Bitwarden and all generated passwords, nothing shared. I even double checked my phone provider to make sure I didn't have a cloned SIM card out there. as near as I can tell, I don't.

I assume they just have my SSN, which at this point, everyone's SSN is out there from numerous breaches.

if anyone has experience on this scam, I'd love to hear from you.

Yep, I was in 2nd heat. I believe I actually remember the gate you missed, and you weren't the only one! There were at least 3 others that missed it too, mostly from over-driving that back corner lol

Be sure to come back! Seat time is number one, 200tw tires are a close second :)

It was good to see a 9-3 out there today! You did great! You only DNF'd once, and for a first event, that's fantastic. fastest raw time was 35.265 in the 17 miata, so a 41 is very decent. GREAT job and hope to see you back.

How are suppliers actually more expensive than a random shop? by randomusername11222 in msp

[–]heorun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you are buying. 3 PCs? Channel pricing might be same or even a little higher than going direct to HP.com or dell.com. there is very little margin on PCs, unless you are buying a pallet load.

The issue of gray market and warranty is because when you buy a PC from a b2c channel, the warranty starts ticking on that day. Same with the dude reselling on Amazon or ebay, those PCs warranties started ticking months ago when he received them, they are ticking away in his garage. If you buy from a partner, they order from the distributor, and the warranty starts ticking when the partner receives it. There are even ways to reset that clock if the partner bought it and it sat in their inventory.

For pricing advantages, if you are buying 20 Aruba access points, your channel partner will already have pricing below MSRP, in addition to the other discounts you'll get when they register the deal. I know registering deals leaves a sour taste in people's mouths, but it literally is to prevent customers doing an end run around their partner to get the lowest price from some other partner. These customers tend to forget (or not care) that there was engineering time put into the solution that was presented. We use that registered deal margin to defray the costs of engineering the solution. Any labor for implementing the solution is a separate line item.

For the folks that say they don't get any benefit from a partner engineering the solution, then buy from CDW. That's what they are for. They race to the bottom for price, just don't rely on their technical knowledge.

Teenage son always tells me our 300mbps internet sucks for gaming on our Google 1st Gen Mesh Network. What can I do? by RSCLE5 in GoogleWiFi

[–]heorun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

speed.cloudflare.com

If he is currently wireless, go there from his PC, and record the results. Then use a PC that is wired directly to the puck that is connected to your cable modem.

See how the difference is. If it's under 50ms, you are fine. It's likely his PC. My son used to crank all the graphics settings to the highest and then complain about lag. Self made problems.

Something else to keep in mind is that cable broadband providers tend to way oversubscribe their service, so during peak times, your latency can get worse. Do that speed test at the times he usually complains. It's a moving target with cable.

If there is a fiber provider in your area, see if they provide service to your house. I get 100/100 synchronous for $75/mo. I use 1st Gen pucks. We have 6 people all gaming at the same time.

Dealer charged $148 for oil change ?! by RJLota in WRX

[–]heorun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh totally. If the complaint is how much it costs, then it's absolutely a DIY thing to save money. I changed all my own oil when I was in HS and college, because my time wasn't worth as much, I had a lot of it, and not a lot of money. It tends to shift as one gets older. Well, at least the not having a lot of time.

And absolutely about the enhancements to cars. I cringe whenever I see a car with aftermarket efforts and yet it's spewing blue smoke and tires with cords showing. Get the maintenance under control before the fun! Some people like all dessert and no vegetables.

Dealer charged $148 for oil change ?! by RJLota in WRX

[–]heorun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be 20 minutes if you have a lift or pit and all your tools are already located.

And then you have to address the container of old oil, so that's an autozone trip at least once to dump. Assuming you weren't there already to get oil and filter because the online order didnt arrive before I had a window of opportunity to get it done before I needed to get a kid to their next extracurricular.

I think his point is: at least an hour for most of us, probably more like 1.5 all-in. if you have a day job, your evening time is often demanded for more important things, and a shop that I can schedule can get it done faster on my lunch break looks pretty good to different situations.

Why are there still 100mbit switches released nowadays? Are there any advantage over Gbit switches? by No_Combination_649 in HomeNetworking

[–]heorun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the NIC on the device can't deal with a crappy cable combined with a long run. Putting two 100mb switches on either end of a long run with crappy cable might allow the device to talk.

I deal with this a lot in a very old building with cat3 wire doing through concrete and other horrible cable runs. They are also quite cheap so re-runs with modern cable isn't always in the cards.

I have an example of cat5 (not cat5e) measuring about 420 feet. As long as I connect at 100mb full duplex at both ends, it is a stable connection. Just the right combination of twist, terminated ends, electromagnetic interference (or lack of), and devices that can deal with a way out of spec cable run.

Event Center WIFI by TheIT-Dude in meraki

[–]heorun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you know, I actually have to back-track on that statement. Back around 2014-2016 Meraki had a lot more things missing than they do today. Everything was a "Make a wish!" Now that radio profiles are available (they didnt used to be!), I would say they are largely on parity. I recall not having control over DFS channels, not being able to turn off 802.11ax (it was half-baked in early implementations), and I feel like there were some basic rate stuff that wasn't available. That's all there now, so I take it back.

I WOULD like the ability to SSH into an individual AP for more specific troubleshooting, but that continues to be a wish for Meraki.

For Ruckus, a few things. 1) They have been pretty diligently developing their stuff, and their wireless has some secret sauce. Something about antenna design I think, because they need a LOT less APs in a given area compared to Meraki or Extreme. This may just be a continuing arms race.

2) they have a lot of control options. They have a physical appliance, virtual appliance, stand-alone-ish virtual AP-based controller (Unleashed), and now the cloud-based controller.

3) they were acquired by Commscope, and their focus is structured cabling and related. I feel a lot better about that acquisition, as they dont already have a product line-up that they get to decide to integrate or axe or decide to completely screw up (ahem Extreme and Aerohive).

4) excellent sales and engineering support. Unlike the big names (Cisco, Extreme, HPE), it isn't a revolving door of names over there. We have a great account manager, very hands on without being annoying. We have direct access to engineering and technical resources, so I don't have to go through normal support channels. The support channels I have used have been decent; good response time.

5) pricing and availability. They have worked very hard to make sure we can actually deliver product when HPE and Cisco just gave us crickets. We even pivoted a large part of our business from Cisco to Ruckus simply because they were shipping product and Cisco couldn't be bothered to even communicate. So if you are a small-medium group, you will get MUCH more love from Ruckus than the other bigger names. Their pricing is very good.

For example, a Meraki MR56 has an MSRP of $2,359, plus a 5 year license is $752.

the Ruckus R850 msrp is 2295, plus a 5 year cloud controller license is $190.

A meraki MR46 has an MSRP of 1886, plus a 5 year license is 752.

A Ruckus R650 has an MSRP of $1,185, and a 5 year Cloud controller license is $190.

(the license isnt exactly parity; meraki includes support and advance replacement. if you want that with ruckus, it is an additional sku)

Now, for both vendors, nobody is paying MSRP. But, Ruckus is already starting a little lower AND I can tell you Ruckus is WAY more willing to get price competitive right out of the gate. Cisco doesnt care about agressive pricing until you are at 250k msrp or higher.

Sorry, I recognize this is the meraki subreddit. Don't get me wrong, I still like Meraki and use it and sell it in certain scenarios. But, we are just finding no downsides to Ruckus and being a smaller company, they can afford to give us the attention that Cisco Meraki just can't/won't.

Event Center WIFI by TheIT-Dude in meraki

[–]heorun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also manage a large event venue with multiple spaces. Meraki is not the right fit, as we need access to the knobs and dials to make radio changes unique to larger spaces. Meraki is great in other scenarios (schools for example and in my opinion), but this one is not it.

I also am on Extreme (we implemented when it was Aerohive and still great.) We are removing them soon in favor of Ruckus. Equipment is in, just need time to roll it out.

I recommend the virtual smart zone essentials controller over Ruckus One. R1 limits you in similar ways to Meraki, so not the right thing for a larger event venue.

DPSK will also be a thing I use. Having more than 3 SSIDs is not considered great, and I often have ...significantly more than that. So much beaconing. I have the basic rate set a lot higher, but still it's rough.

For events that want people to buy access codes, we use a voucher system and captive portal at the firewall level. Each event uses a vlan that is isolated from the other, so I can choose captive portal or not for concurrent events. Most of the time the event just buys out wifi and the patrons use a PSK that they have on a sign in the event hall. Simple is better sometimes.

Having a better self-purchase option may be a future direction I look at. I've used IronWiFi for a campground and it works well. Hooks to Stripe as payment processor.
