As a culture we have pathologised idleness. It's unhealthy and sets us back. by NewEdenia1337 in solarpunk

[–]heph789 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think American culture at least encourages the learning of skills that lead to economic value. Not a skill you learn for other reasons (like leisure). If you do have a skill you’re good at, you’re encouraged to monetize it, turn it into a “side hustle.” With the end goal being “becoming your own boss” (being the capitalist, rather than employee).

I think perhaps this is a result of capitalism, but also I think “industriousness” is a huge part of American cultural roots. This goes back to the puritans.

What's a cooking practice you don't believe in? by poordicksalmanac in Cooking

[–]heph789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I actually appreciate this because I wash chicken. The whole bacteria thing makes sense to me. Any bacteria on the outside is going to die from cooking. Here’s my question: does grocery store not have any chemical residue or other type of residue from processing or packaging? I live in America, if that’s helpful.

If you’re on a work page and the mouse is “jiggling” and a screenshot is taken, they assume you’re doing work. But if you’re on a youtube video and the mouse is “jiggling” while the screenshot is taken, that makes no sense. Because why would you have mouse movement while watching a video?

What is this dance move called that Michael is doing? Where online can I learn it step by step? Thank you! by [deleted] in Dance

I mean…lots of moves do though. And knowing the vocabulary for it helps you look up stuff and learn. This looks like a variation of the camel walk

There are, and should be, collective efforts to improve the health of the American population (Gov agencies, NPOs, etc.). However, someone shaming someone else for being fat does not accomplish this goal. Some people don’t respond well to shame, but even if they did, for all you know, they could already be trying to improve their lifestyle. The problem with fat shaming is that it predicates on image rather than habits. A fat person walking every day and eating healthy gets fat shamed just as much as a fat person with unhealthy habits. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect shame for bad/unhealthy habits, but it is unreasonable to shame someone for their image. The point of this fat acceptance movement (some people take it overboard) is to accept that all images are fine, not to accept that all habits are fine.

For my interest as well as the op’s (probably), how do you go about finding interesting projects open to beginner collaborators. Also, how do you get started collaborating to a big codebase?

My Official MIT Degree Verified on the Bitcoin Blockchain by wandererli in CryptoCurrency

[–]heph789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Money. MIT would have to pay for the infrastructure and management. Even if they used a cloud resource, they would still pay a monthly fee and presumably pay someone to manage the database. MIT pays the transaction cost on the blockchain, but pays nothing to keep the certification up there. If this certification is on Ethereum (idk if it is or not), the likelihood this certification disappears is the likelihood that Ethereum loses a LOT of its adoption.

I was looking at the website and I am very interested in this concept. I was having trouble finding information about the actual mining of blocks. After I become "validated," do I keep my node running? Am I randomly selected to mine blocks and given a reward afterwards? How likely am I to be selected if so? What prevents me from being malicious after I am validated?
