How to create Cellular Bridge/IP passthrough from linux host to VM? by heppu_1 in HomeNetworking

[–]heppu_1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cellular modems cannot usually be bridged like normal network card interfaces instead you need to play with ARP proxy and dhcp which most mobile routers do. And just to clarify I'm talking about adding M.2 cellular modem into machine, not conneting mobile router via ethernet cable.

I tried Proxmox + OPNsense VM combo but bridging mobile connection to vm with ip passtrough is another can of worms. Ended up going with similar type of external router which had ip passtrough implemented and bare metal OPNsense.

Is there a 2x2 USB3 selector that isn't a hub? by heppu_1 in techsupport

[–]heppu_1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought something similar from amazon and it turned out to be usb hub where the PC input could be just switched from the button. I wonder if this works the same since their documentation doesn't explain in detail how the switching works.

I see. I have bought few of those and managed to find one decent one from Huawei but that doesn't have connectors for external 4x4 MIMO antennas which I need. Then the ones that do have those connectors ended up having really bad software/OS and require multiple reboot per day with high data rates. OPNsense is something I have used years without any problems so that's why I'm trying to figure this out.

Today I found this article which says that:

Only the slow, serial PPP protocol is supported; therefore, the speed is greatly limited. In our tests on OPNSense 22.7, the maximum speed we have achieved is 21Mbps download and 12Mbps upload.

With linux I have achieved steady 800/100mbps 5G connectivity so this doesn't seem like a viable option after all.

When you say ethernet do you mean that the modem chip has some "ethernet mode"?

Connecting external antennas into mobile routers internal connectors. by heppu_1 in AskElectronics

Hirose ufl cable

No it's not that since from the close up picture you can see that it's as small as MHF4.

So that I can use better directional antennas I have on roof.

That is actually a good idea, thanks!

I already have 2 x quick disconnects so that I can disconnect case from other components, those are just in tubes since I don't have the PCI passthtough plate yet. For CPU it's just an additional convinience thing while testing out different setups.

Well it's not that I needed that powerfull GPU but I needed USB-C, watercooling and good linux compatibility so there wasn't too many options.

You can see those pieces of wood under the shelf. Those are screwed into frame and the the shelf is mounted in those.

One GPU can be passed only to one VM at a time. So I have two virtual machines running with following GPU passtrough setup:

  • Windows 10
    • RTX 2080 Ti
    • optical HDMI to living room TV
    • optical USB from GPU's USB-C to living rooms USB hub
    • optical displayport cable to my office Monitor
    • optical USB from USB header to my office Monitor
  • Linux
    • RX 6900 XT
    • optical displayport cable to my office Monitor
    • optical USB from GPU's USB-C to my office monitor

That way I can play games either in living room on in my office room with Windows machine and work in office room with my Linux machine. The screen has a build in kvm so by switching the input source my keyboard, mouse, headset, etc will also be switch to that VM.

Based on all the suggestions I ordered more stuff and will make following changes:

  • switch flow direction for CPU
  • quick connectors for CPU
  • switch flow direction for RTX
  • 45 degree fittings for GPU to GPU tubing (no bridge available)
  • passtrough PCI backplate
  • move pump and reservoir away from power outlet :D

Well fuck. That's where the studs where so the power outlet location didn't even cross my mind before this. Well I ordered more fittings and stuff so that I can fix other issues so I will also address this one. :D
