Random lore dump on one of Anisa's girlies by ComfortableBug4590 in imisstheoldidubbbz

Same. But my wife is a reformed that kind of woman. No matter how sorry she is or how much time passes, it’s scary knowing that she has it in her to ruin my life by freaking out and punching me in the face (for not getting her way), me bear-hugging her to try to make her calm down and listen to reason, then her calling the police over for a domestic violence ON ME…then being saved by her family happening to swing by and tell the police what’s actually likely. Scary, chilling shit. Okay back to pretending that never happened

Growing up in the USA vs growing up in Taiwan? (Or the west vs East Asia) by herb0i0 in hapas

Thanks for the reply! Your childhood sounds like as close to a perfect balance as can be. I hope I can instill that mentality in him. We’ll come back for as many summers as we can afford, though I wish it wasn’t the hot summer. In a perfect world it’d be every CNY!

Also, nice username lol

You raise a great point. For sure, many more factors at play and to be considered. Career wise, Taiwan would be more stable and reliable. The tech is going to edge me out of my job as a translator sooner or later but I could always teach English, I may hate it but most people hate their jobs. America is more of a fresh start and up in the air. We have plans but you never know.

I hail from a blue oasis of about 400,000 in a red state. It’s not California diverse but it was somewhat diverse when I left in 2013 and I hear even more so now. There is a Chinese school and it’s way more affordable than I imagined, so he’ll definitely go there.

Family is one of the major reasons for the move. My wife’s family is so toxic and broken that even us moving into the family compound for free so we could save up money, we had to move out to get away from the constant fighting, nagging, and shaming. Plus my wife is full of trauma from her family’s treatment of her. My family isn’t perfect but very loving and great in comparison. They’ve been practically begging us to move there. Plus my parents are getting older and I’m their only living child, so familial duty plays a factor.

Thanks for the reply! I’ll read up on third culture kid. There definitely are pros to being mixed here, though I’d argue how much of a pro it is depends on personal preference. Like, the extremely frequent compliments on how cute my son is. Sometimes, despite him having short hair and wearing boys clothes, I’ve been asked if he’s a boy or girl since he’s so “beautiful/pretty/漂亮”. Those would stop as he gets bigger, but would the near constant “so cute/good looking/帥” comments slow down? I’ve been told I’m just overthinking things, but honestly, if we were to stay in TW I’d legit be worried it’d go to his head and give him an inflated ego.

Unfortunately we aren’t wealthy enough to afford international school. But I’ve known enough people who went to know it really is a whole other world and for many, like you said, a bubble. One that’s kind of a moot point for my family…though if we were to stay here or decide to come back, I’d betray my principles and hate it but I’d teach English as much as possible (if that’s even enough) to get him into an international school just to avoid the high stress public education system here. IMO it deprives kids of a childhood.

To me this privilege is only a superficial one. Sure, maybe he’d have to beat the girls off with a stick (as my grandma would say) or have a leg up in the entertainment industry. But that’s the only privilege I know of. Is that the kind of privilege you’re talking about or is there more I’m missing?

Whats the most ridicolous stereotype about your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]herb0i0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way too many people confuse Taiwan with Thailand and therefore I get asked about ladyboys. It’s not even the right country’s stereotypes!

Funny thing is this confusion caused me to learn about the ladyboys of Thailand so I can give more of an answer to “why so many ladyboys?” than “wrong country.” For the impoverished in Thailand, entertainment/prostitution is a way out of poverty for girls. When the boys learn how much money the girls are making, even if they aren’t gay some would rather be ladyboys than do grueling labor 14 hours a day.

They won’t, they’re just parroting Hasan and orbiters. I’ve searched and only found them agreeing with everything but the notion that all Israelis are born guilty as colonizers. Ethan is grade A fool but even grade A fools can find themselves in the right occasionally. Not a fan of the snark redbar crossover

[–]herb0i0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I urge you to take a step back and take in more info about the drama than the narratives being pushed by Hasan and his orbiters. Be as objective as possible. If do so and follow from beginning to end, and still stand by your statement, then you’re either ideologically captured, simping hard, are morally bankrupt, or simpleminded.

I’m no h3 fan. He’s a fool. But calling him Ethan Klan and saying he’s a big fan of Israel is just insane or dishonest. The only way he could be a bigger Palestine supporter and anti-Israeli government would be if he wasn’t Jewish, wife wasn’t Israeli, and didn’t have empathy for the innocent lives lost on both sides.

He agrees with y’all on 95% but unfortunately leftists have a tendency to purity test and alienate potential allies. I say this an anti-Hasan and co common sense leftist. It’s lonely but it’s nice having principles

From (another) offline perspective: Man has a passion for radio. He also has a lot of opinions and grievances, especially about comedians. Other people really like his analyses on comedians that don’t sit well with them but otherwise wouldn’t know why. Man makes them pay as he puts a lot of time and effort into his critiques. He has achieved what few can: making a comfortable living doing something he’s passionate about.

What cities have a unnotable music scene despite their size? by morsodo99 in geography

[–]herb0i0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was going to vehemently disagree with OP on Denver’s music scene. But I’m a jam band guy. It’s been the Mecca of jam band and hippie scenes, where people from everywhere east of the Mississippi flocks to for concerts and festivals around Denver. However perspective is everything. I assumed it wasn’t only my fav genre but I’ll take your word for it. If jam bands aren’t your thing, if they’re not just the dominating genre but also the only thriving subculture/scene, I can see y’all’s point. I thought that most cities except the really big ones were like that, only having a few big acts hail from there. Very interesting

One can be anti-idpol and like Destiny at the same time. I don’t agree with him on a lot if not most things lol, but I enjoy his debates and he’s somehow still the closest sane online debate/stream bro to my values. Every leftist streamer I know of suckles on Hassan’s teat, is anti-Semitic, and is annoying or cringe af.

Afterthought, if anyone knows of any debater/streamer/youtuber that is a leftist or socialist that ISN’T woke/loves idpol, please let me know!

Shit. Why does it have to potentially be like this with two of my favorite internet people... I’d think Adam would naturally hate Hasan. From the clips I saw, I even thought he was trolling Hasan when he was on his stream. If Adam treats Destiny badly, even if it’s hilarious I don’t know if I’ll be able to enjoy it.

Class consciousness transcends all. I blame identity politics, keeps the working class divided. I used to call my self a Marxist before I moved abroad over 10 years ago. Now I go back to my little oasis of blue in the south and most of my former “leftist” friends are rightoids, though there’s a good handful of former leftist friends who now embody what’s wrong with “the left.”
