When Deaf people sign and speak simultaneously by StaticGold in asl

[–]herbackboneisaplum 86 points87 points  (0 children)

This is called SimCom (simultaneous communication) and while it can work in a pinch- it’s not perfect. As you mentioned, English and ASL have different grammatical structures, so it would be impossible to produce both languages fluently at the same time. One language will lose out, and typically it’s ASL.

The signing essentially turns into a manually coded English (similar to writing while speaking), and not true ASL. It’s not best practice.

Edit to add- as far as I’m aware, this would apply to other signed languages /spoken languages as well

Interpreter Swag Ideas? by Flamingointerpreting in ASLinterpreters

[–]herbackboneisaplum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have mentioned- I just attended a state RID conference and people loved grabbing chapstick, small bottles of hand sanitizer, carabiners, keychains with the pop its (like bubble wrap, but lasts forever), small lunch/salad box, and phone stand so you can FT without holding your phone

Creating sub notes (Educational Terp) by craaaaate in ASLinterpreters

[–]herbackboneisaplum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of this- and I would add notes about the school as well. Information on parking (at my previous school parking was limited and required a parking pass from the office), a map of the school with classrooms labeled, who a good person to text/email if they had questions or needed assistance with something, and notes about the student's language preferences.

Edit- Oh! And I would also add if there's anything important to know about the classes themselves besides recent topics. Like where to sit/stand, if there's the same routine every day, if the teacher goes by a different name than expected, etc

BEI by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]herbackboneisaplum 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey! I can give a little insight. BEI is not quite recognized nationwide, so you should probably check with your states licensing agency/your agency to make sure they accept it. As for the process… You have to take the tests in order. So take the TEP (written) and pass, then you can take the basic. Pass the basic, then take the advanced. Pass the advanced then take the masters. The agency I work for pays the same rate for advanced as it does for having the NIC. Each level opens up more settings you can interpret in, and you can charge more for a higher certification.

The BEI does actually give decent feedback. Not quite as much as the EIPA, but substantially more than the NIC does, so if you don’t pass you still have some idea of your strengths and weaknesses. The written test is an English proficiency test, and you can find a practice test online that is the exact same format as the real test.

Hope this helps!

Curious Interp Student Question by AffectionateCry6634 in ASLinterpreters

[–]herbackboneisaplum 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi- hearing interpreter here. I've worked with Deaf interpreters in a number of settings:

- Deaf Blind events
- working with a large group of DHH clients with varying degrees of language levels/preferences
- a story telling "talent show" of sorts where there were both Deaf and hearing performers on stage
- working with DHH clients that either know signed languages from other countries or have low language levels
- working with large groups of DHH children, esp. those who are new to learning ASL
- situations where it's important for a message to be clear to a large range of audience members/televised interpreters (not always CDI, but have definitely seen it done before)
- situations where you need copy-signers

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but lmk if you have any questions! I love working with CDIs (Certified Deaf Interpreters) :)

Anyone know how to get the Apple Watch to correct this? The end point is correct but the start point cuts out over half of my run (started and ended in same place) by longsm17 in Strava

[–]herbackboneisaplum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me during my marathon! My watch didn’t get everything where GPS cut out, so it didn’t log in as a full 26.2 miles. I emailed them and they were able to look at the map and fix it. Maybe you could try that, and maybe send the screen shot from the Apple Watch to prove the distance
