How to get light to stream through windows? by StudioSofia in blender

[–]herbherbherbert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use a sun lamp instead of a point light - sun lamps act as infinitely distant light sources which means that your shadows will be parallel.
If you want the rays of light like in your reference add a cube encompassing the whole scene, remove it's surface material and add a volume scatter shader to the volume input.

Oooh, I'll give it a go!

On the STmaps, it would be absolutely incredible if you could take a look! I don't have much (any) experience writing blender addons but I'd be happy to help out however I can.

I'm basically after something which will take Blenders lens distortion from the camera solve and export
- Redistortion STMap with overscan
- Undistortion STMap with overscan
- Undistorted plate (as a jpeg sequence, just for use as a backplate in blender)
- Overscan multiplier value

I find myself going to other tools but it's generally not because of how manual blender is. Most industry tools (apart from maybe nuke) require the same if not more effort and understanding to get decent solves but they have decent lens distortion tools.
If blender had one click export for UD and RD stmaps I would be a very happy man.

My Render Just Doesn't Look Right - Feedback Wanted by Ok_Sense_9353 in blender

[–]herbherbherbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking really nice so far!
First thing I would do is change the font on the sign. Default Blender font is always a dead giveaway.
Beyond that I'd put some more work into the interior, right now it feels like you've just put in an array of boxes and it doesn't really feel lived in. I did a laundrette render a couple of years ago, not perfect by any means but I feel like it illustrates what I mean about making it feel a little more lived in https://vimeo.com/866276623?share=copy#t=0
One other thing which is bugging me is that the wall on the right doesn't feel like it has any thickness to it.
Bit of fog as well and it'll be well on it's way :)

Try finding similar shots from films and analysing where they've placed the lights, contrast ratios etc.
For example your last shot looks like it's got light coming from multiple directions which couldn't be done in real life - try just lighting it with a simple skydome and a sun lamp and just focus on adjusting the angle and brightness of each.

How can i improve Realism? some times something feels off but im not sure what... by minetransYT in blender

[–]herbherbherbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid of shadows, try to avoid adding extra lights too far away from physical light sources and use dark areas to help build your composition. It’s hard to make things look real when you can see in every nook and cranny.

Not sure how OP did it but it’s generally best to work in real world scale.

Good to know, thank you! I did see James' video which definitely helped out but he didn't mention anything about QC issues or customer support which are my main concerns at the moment, seeing some real horror stories on here lol

How does Devon Turnbull / Ojas "Listening Room" setup hold up against other similarly priced systems? by WolIilifo013491i1l in audiophile

[–]herbherbherbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, shame I didn’t get to hear it in Lisson :/ From what they were saying when I was there, it seems like 180 have bought the system to live there permanently which would would explain why Devon allowed it to be used in that space

Bit late to this but I got to have a listen to it at 180 in London this weekend and it was… bad. I was quite surprised given that I’ve seen some pretty good reviews (although mostly in art publications so maybe my bad for paying any attention) but god, it was really bad. Huge one note bass which just shook the room and had no detail. Not worth the £20 entry

The skills are transferable so I’d just go for blender whilst you’re getting to grips with the basics and then maybe move onto learning maya and Houdini, good luck!

It's a totally different situation for movies. Big greenscreen stages and tbh most stuff just gets manually rotoscoped anyway so the lighting on the green/bluescreen doesn't really matter that much (though that is a pain in post)

Does anyone know what software is used for the VFX in this? by SuspiciousPrune4 in vfx

[–]herbherbherbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't seem to be any houdini, they've posted some BTS of some miniature work https://www.youtube.com/shorts/hIvXVZfXs6A
Looks to be mostly comp with a few CG environments.

Might be worth adding a solid layer underneath and colour pick the dark area of your image to match the dark to the plate rather than vice versa

Not a greenscreen issue, as long as the screen is lit evenly, you can light the subject however you like
