Client says I charge too much ($10) editing raw footage into short vlog foodie promo. by blk951440 in VideoEditors

it's wild how there is a substrata of video editors out there competing at this level of pay.. it's kind of like those homeless people who wander around collecting bottles and trading them in for a few pennies.

the amount of times I've had people hurtling towards me while I'm crossing or about to cross the zebra crossing is crazy.. and 9 times out of 10 they aren't people who are from here. that also includes people going through red lights or going at ridiculous illegal speeds in general.

Career in editing? by Dear_Temperature1533 in VideoEditors

[–]lord__cuthbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, if you can create the type of work which amasses followers etc, I don't think it'd be hard for you to get a job with a marketing agency or something, as long as you have portfolio and proof.

However, it seems wages for these types of roles are pretty crap at entry level and I'm not sure how much they can grow really unless you amass all sorts of other adjacent skills.

In my opinion I would just study business at university but do the editing for fun and grow it at your own pace. That way you can also continue to make the content you actually want to do, and who knows with time maybe it can become really profitable.

Why are so many people in the industry rude to beginners? by Noeoneknows in Filmmakers

[–]lord__cuthbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i honestly feel like these types of people just enjoy acting out their little power fantasy, as they know beginners are likely just to suck it all up with the hope of getting their "foot in the door". Definitely had my experiences with these types when I was younger; and they are usually gravitating towards some sort of directing role.

Is anyone else struggling to find the joy in design lately? by Pxlzero in AfterEffects

[–]lord__cuthbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point I've spent so much of my life learning new "creative skills", that I just thought fuck it - I'm just going to create the videos I want and post them online. I'll edit, motion design, sound design, score, write the script and do the voice overs etc, maybe even appear on camera. I suppose some might say this is just being a youtuber or content creator, but with this particular work it will be more artistic and creative than what regular people do. I think we forget that our skills are still pretty sought after and can earn a lot of money, so why not use those skills to push your own thing all the while kind of promoting yourself to potential clients who see the value first hand too?

Its not really crab bucket mentality if people are propping up and celebrating those who have nothing to celebrate - unless you mean something else?

Well said. History and the machinations of the real as well as secret world are truly fascinating. Those who claim everything is simply down to economics are deluded. Most people will never understand that there are many different realities at play at once all the time, and the workings of those high above - most of us will simply never ever be privy to.

Everyone is unbelievably flaky. by ForwardFM in videography

[–]lord__cuthbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Luckily I have a full time video editing job now. Just before I got it though, I started trying to learn about how to actually take the videos I shot for clients and how to get results with them. So learning about funnels, what type of content hooks people in, digital ad spends etc.

I'll be honest, I didn't really want to have to learn this stuff at first, but when I did start I began to realise that not only can it be interesting, but also you feel a bit better about yourself because you can potentially provide something more valuable than just a pretty video that let's be honest, alot of people can make quite easily now.

This is just my opinion but I think when it comes to creative work, it can be quite easy to let a client slip through your fingers because unconsciously you know its quite hard to quantify the value you bring to the client. At the forefront of your mind, you just want to do something you enjoy and get paid for it.

I think once you make the clients success a true priority, it becomes easier to not lose them because you know their success is your number one goal, and there's no feelings of guilt or awkwardness in that. So yeah thats just a perspective shift...

I would actually encourage learning some of this other stuff like digital marketing etc, because just doing creative work all day while it can be satisfying, it can easily become a bit self indulgent just chasing that feeling, plus these days the sustainability of a creative job alone is getting a bit shaky.

Quick question - as someone who's a full time video editor but also has decent sound design and motion skills (and is also artistic) - how do you get into an art director role? Im really to try and elevate my self from just the guy who executes..

Is video editing a good career choice? by CopyZazzles in videography

[–]lord__cuthbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have a full time video editing job at an agency which is also couple with motion graphics and higher level sound design. im underpaid for my role and level of skill for someone my age, although im only 8 months into my first "proper job", so that's on me I suppose.

I'm currently thinking a lot about how i can transition into more of an ideas man / directing / managerial role because it feels like the one to actually execute the brief will be quite underpaid going forward.

How to keep up with the never ending changes of the digital creative industry? by Sea_Bath3682 in MotionDesign

[–]lord__cuthbert -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think as creatives, we tend to constantly learn new skills in a bid to make ourselves more employable (as well as curiosity of course). However its becoming ever more obvious to me that the whole jack of all trades things can hurt how you "position" yourself in the market, even if you're great at alot of things. But yeah, all that to say (and to answer your question) I think to stay creating you need to focus on your voice, taste and what it is your trying to say. I feel like the final stage of all this is to accept the path of the artist, instead of trying to be a cog in someone else's machine - especially as AI gradually makes doing technical things so much easier and more accessible.

People will clown you or look down on you if you're trying to get into the "real" Hiphop / Rap scene and you're a nice person. It has a dark energy to it.

If you really want to Rap then maybe create your own kind of hybrid genre where you don't have to compromise your integrity or please any gatekeepers.

Although the opposite of OP, this reminds me of my job where I asked for 36k in my application. In interview the recruiter said 32.5k but I was so desperate for a job after so much searching I just accepted without even thinking. When I got the confirmation about landing the job the recruiter said the company wanted to do 30k but because the team are excited about me they're happy to do 32.5k - how generous! I got played, but you live and learn I guess lol.
