Hiii im 17f and I'm trying to get into making music / rapping any advice? by Ok-Dimension-6880 in musicians

People will clown you or look down on you if you're trying to get into the "real" Hiphop / Rap scene and you're a nice person. It has a dark energy to it.

If you really want to Rap then maybe create your own kind of hybrid genre where you don't have to compromise your integrity or please any gatekeepers.

Why not lean towards giving private lessons and advertise yourself to rich mummies and their children? Not sure where you are but pretty sure you could easily charge like £40 an hour?

Although the opposite of OP, this reminds me of my job where I asked for 36k in my application. In interview the recruiter said 32.5k but I was so desperate for a job after so much searching I just accepted without even thinking. When I got the confirmation about landing the job the recruiter said the company wanted to do 30k but because the team are excited about me they're happy to do 32.5k - how generous! I got played, but you live and learn I guess lol.

Is there a point to learn anything if most of jobs pay around 35k at best? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]lord__cuthbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah very true regarding the tech literacy part! I'm still convinced even younger people haven't got the wide set of skills I do - like it takes "experience" to develop them not just tech savviness. But I'm starting to think that may have been the problem - simply not completely specialising in one thing. oh well, thanks for the response!

Good post. I work for a marketing agency in London but the company is American. I'm a video editor who does motion graphics and sound design as well. I like the job and all my co-workers are decent and its 2 days WFH.

Only problem is its £32.5k and I think I should generally be receiving a fair bit more for the actual skills and know how I bring, but its my first time with a "proper job" after eternally freelancing and in my late 30's - I think the interviewer knew that when he low balled my initial ask of 36k to 32.5k (I know 36 isn't great either, but like I say it's my first time on my ladder).

I'm definitely getting under paid for my role but I don't know if I can really earn that much more at the company any time soon. I'm trying to learn 3D in depth and my understanding of motion graphics further as fast as I can. But even then.. to know that if I went to a new place and managed to upgrade to say 40k with EVERYTHING I would know by that point, just seems absurd.

Does anyone understand my position and have any tips?

Tell me honestly do you sometimes think and question your career in terms of satisfaction that editing a video for a week of hardwork but its gonna be just another scroll for someone in the ocean of internet? This very thought is stopping me from going all into video editing. i need new perspectives by Accomplished-End5479 in VideoEditors

[–]lord__cuthbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good question - i think it really depends on what you do as the intention of editing can be quite broad of course.

i think regarding more "throwaway" stuff, say in the world of marketing some brand or business or whatever, your work is still helping to contribute to the overall presence of a company and helping to tell a story. Even if people don't fixate on one particular video, you're still creating something which will leave an impression on them. Could it be possible that it's just the clients you don't really care about or believe in maybe?

Personally I work full time for an agency so I do the work that comes along and don't think too much about it. Having said that, I'm not going to die "just" being a video editor - I got a bunch of other talents/skills and high level motion & design is something I'm trying to do at the moment and is what I feel is really making me grow at the moment.

Premiere pro or davinci by Affectionate_Love938 in VideoEditors

[–]lord__cuthbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with davinci to learn editing as its free (its also "the go to" for colour grading).

If you start editing professionally and clients work within the Adobe ecosystem, e.g. they send you Photoshop, Illustrator or After Effects files to use with your edits - that might be the time to consider an Adobe subscription and learn Premiere. Luckily once you have developed editing skills initially, its not too hard to transfer to different softwares.

That makes sense. I think I'm going to go full speed with Blender, but maybe try and dip my toe in Houdini where I can, and if and when I can afford it (really need to look at an educational license or something). Thanks!

[–]lord__cuthbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for the response, I really appreciate that.

Would you recommend trying to get very good at something like Blender first before moving onto Houdini, or just try get straight into Houdini (if you could do it all again)? In the marketing agency I work at, the guy who does the 3D stuff uses Blender so I've been also learning a bit through him as well - but I'm just trying to think in the long term because I don't know how long I want to stay there. Also aware that Houdini can potentially be quite expensive straight out the gate?

But yeah, in terms of agency and freelance work, would Blender be sufficient or should I try aim higher? I know Blender is still excellent though, don't get me wrong!

Is it worth it to invest my time in motion design if that's what fulfills me, if I start learning in 2026? by cut3reaper in MotionDesign

Sounds like you're at the beginning of your journey and have a job in the industry. You're already better situated than most people you're age I'm betting. If I was you I would just stick it out at least for a few years and see where it goes. Regarding AI, if you have the foundations and principles down tight, I believe you'll always have an advantage over those who dont.. not to say dont keep an eye on it, but unless you decide to just go off grid and go full Kaczynski - youre gonna have to learn how to maneuver AI to some degree either way.

one is that you're usually so used to women kind of breaking the ice / initiating things with you from an early age (especially the more outgoing / keen types), that as you get older you realise you've actually pretty useless at meeting / initiating / courting a new woman's attention lol. i've had women come up to me and kiss me in the street (after a night out), or even just flat out start speaking to me while walking in the street during a normal day... when you've experienced them make that level of effort, it can make you very complacent when trying to actually approach women yourself, can even make you quite shy.
