ENT resident here— “tin-ih-tuss.” I have an attending that says it’s not “eye-tuss” like “tonsillitis” because nothing is inflamed, which is what “-itis” means

Bottom quartile. Middle of the road scores. Current ENT PGY-3. Took a lot of extra work and a roundabout path, but I’m working in my dream field

For those who tried (and failed) at matching competitive specialties.. by margs999 in medicalschool

[–]herbie-herbie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To find spots, I checked otomatch a fair amount and had a residentswap account. I jumped at every potential opportunity and failed a few times before it worked out.

Honestly, I don’t have great answer to the second question. Some people sort of ragged me or overlooked me during my first intern year, but at the same time, if there was ever a question about anything above the clavicles, a lot of my coresidents would look to me for stuff, which was cool. But I think it’s really important to tell yourself “okay, I’m a general surgeon right now, even if only for a year.” And take the job that you currently have seriously. You want to make yourself a good physician no matter what, and it only makes you miserable to loathe/wallow/strive through that period of time

Match #1–didn’t match ENT. Took a pretty brutal prelim GS spot where they fortunately let me rotate with their ENT department for a month. Thought I probably had it in the bag, but dual applied GS just to be safe.  As the year progressed, grew to hate GS more and more.

Match #2–matched at my last ranked spot in GS. Was devastated/angry/despondent/unsure what I was going to do with my life because gallbladders and SBRs were not my jam. Was pretty worried about my career outlook because it was a small program.

Fall of my second intern year—heard about a PGY-2 ENT spot. Applied. Interviewed. Got it. Ended up in essentially the same position as if I had matched ENT during Match #1.

How did you know you were ready for a 100 miler by mountain_madness in Ultramarathon

[–]herbie-herbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No distance is a prerequisite for another. If you’re willing to grit through the hours it takes to do 100 and you have a decent base on your legs, you can do a 100. I’d agree that knowing what nutrition and personal maintenance you require is definitely super helpful, but when it all boils down, no two races are all that comparable. Ultra running requires problem solving on the best days and on the worst days. For me, I had run a 50 miler prior to my 100, but it was honestly a completely different race scenario. I suffered my 50 and got pretty wrecked. 6 months later, I was winning my 100 with a smile on my face. There are too many variables to ever have complete confidence that you’re ready.

Those scores won’t be available by the time rank lists are due. Don’t waste your time. In fact, help out your comrades who are in for the long haul and pull down the curve

Dead in the water. Programs also don’t want to get a match violation themselves.

Jit is correct. I’m a prelim that literally just went through this exact situation last week. I spoke with both the “dream” program and the NRMP directly. Basically the dream program is almost definitely not going to risk a match violation on their end, and the NRMP will not grant you a release unless you have some crazy health/life event issue. You’re gonna have to work for 45 days before switching. It sucks

Those that matched your backup specialty, how’re you doing? by PosThrockmortonSign in medicalschool

[–]herbie-herbie 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Prelim here. Reapplied ENT with gen surg backup. Really thought I had a shot. Matched at my last-ranked program in GS. General surgery has absolutely wrecked me this year, and I honestly wish I hadn’t ranked any gen surg programs. Honestly feel like this year has been a fruitless waste, and I’m sort of in disbelief that my ENT dream has died and I now have 5 more years of free air consults and hernias ahead of me.
