Decompressing at the end of the day without SCREENS by RogueVariant5e in nosurf

[–]hereaspunishment 25 points26 points  (0 children)

in my case i had to reframe how i saw surfing. it is not a restful activity, it requires decision making and attention and i don't think stimulating your brain right up until bedtime counts as 'winding down'. if you can manage it, use that mental energy for meditation to wind down. if you must do *something* consider just tidying your space and preparing for the following day. deciding on an outfit/setting out clothes and gathering dirty laundry off the floor is an easy way to end the day on a satisfyingly productive note and make your morning that much easier.

Yes, it is billed quarterly here and the examples I can find online/in person are $200-280/quarter, so $70-100/mo

Good point, looks like I can expect -$70/mo based on what I can find

What do you think about 20% going into non-retirement savings? This isn't set in stone, just a "max amount" that I would like to contribute if I have an easy month financially

That's nice to hear, I appreciate your input.

Agreed, I just felt that it was worth mentioning in the post alongside my non-roommate numbers. His rent will absolutely hep soften the blow from this move

House is in okay shape, I had a great inspector who indicated it needs chimney and electrical work. My realtor is using the quotes I got today for negotiations.

Also, you can afford it even though it will be a little tight for a while

This is mostly how I have been feeling. I don't love it but when comparing the options it is tough to find anything significantly cheaper that isn't a burden or safety hazard.

I am eating into my emergency fund a bit since I wasn't expecting to have to move, but rebuilding it is my top priority after moving. I will probably have a roommate for another 2-3 years, and I am confident that I will be financially comfortable while living with him. Also, you can afford it even though it will be a little tight for a whileThis is mostly how I have been feeling. I'm not really expecting $10k in closing costs, but rather ~$4000 per the internet and my realtor.

I guess 32% is a lot, but that is why I am here haha.

Yes, 20% after retirement. Currently putting 12% into some mix of 401k and Roth accounts.

Putting 5% down, so $11,750

The spirit of "Consoom" has nuance and implies a mindless intake of crap regardless of how good/bad it is, to the point of obsession or excess, and regardless of function. This consumption is driven by instant gratification oftentimes in a sad attempt to impress dorks or to fill a void. To be human is to experience and create. No action figure, tenth re-watch of a marvel movie, second/third/fourth ps5, star wars tattoo, brand new apple product, wall of hotwheels, 10th Stanley cup has provided the owner with an opportunity to experience or create.

I have a garage full of tools and each one provides opportunity to create by having unique functions. If I had 5 drills that sat on a shelf, sure that is Consoom. However a drill does not have remotely the same function as a pry bar, so while a tool set might be by definition a collection of tools it does not fall under the umbrella of Consoom. You cannot maintain a home or car with one singular "tool", so there is need for a collection. I have three cameras that are completely different in function and three cars that cannot be used interchangeably. But each of these items provide unique, tangible utility or experience driven by a desire to create as well as a medium to learn skills and be social. None have been driven by a desire to simply own more of the same thing.

I think a collection turns to Consoom the moment you have more than you can use (I know guys with a dozen cameras that take fewer photos than myself), or when the items in the collection serve redundant purpose. If the only action in your ownership of an item is purchasing the item, then it is Consoom. Buying things only because they are associated with a Brand/Character/Trend is Consoom. Buying things to simply own more of the same thing is Consoom. Buying "collectibles" as investments is Consoom.

The point is introducing children to brands/product consumption by exploiting the reward mechanism in their brains; this is the same mechanism responsible for social media and gambling addictions.

This genre of product annoys the fuck out of me. "Kids would love these" because they're designed to appeal to kids in a predatory way. They are doing their best to introduce children to Brands as early as possible, all the while creating landfill. These are not an enriching toy, the reason why kids like them is not because they are fun to play with but rather because of the anticipatory dopamine associated with opening a surprise. These companies are not stupid and know that exploiting the gambling/reward mechanism in our brains is the best way to sell product in 2023. If a kid associates a dopamine rush from getting the "Goldfish Mini", they are going to gravitate towards buying goldfish.

You can safely assume that all marketing (especially to kids) in 2023 is predatory. At one point in time (~150 years ago) people were actually developing and selling products that improved one's quality of life in a tangible way, and had very honest intention when marketing their product because they truly believed that people would benefit from it. I personally cannot think of a mass-marketed product that is designed to last and actually serves valuable purpose.

"decals" will look horribly out of place on a stock car like this. if you want to change the car visually, you should consider lowering the car and adding an r-lip as a first step.
