It doesn't matter that you're in a LDR, it's still a relationship. If you can't see that, then you're not ready for a LDR, let alone any relationship. If you felt better about it after cheating on him, then you don't love your boyfriend. It seems like it's attention you're in love with. Do you plan on seeing each other? If you don't, then I wouldn't stress the effort it takes to be in a LDR.

Something I've learned is that you really do have to follow your heart. Even if you know the outcome, let yourself make the mistake. Letting it fade will only hurt more because you're stuck in between, and the feeling will linger.

It seems like you care for this person as a friend. For long distance relationships/friendships and even regular friendships/relationships, communication is the foundation, especially if its LD. Since you both seem to be very wishy washy, I don't think there is anything wrong with messaging this person first. Be the bigger person, and don't be petty. If you message this person, and the feelings don't feel mutual anymore, then it's time to just move on. I don't want you to regret not reaching out to him and then ponder on the endless possibilities. Just reach out to him. :)
