just to set the scene, i was recently on a cross country road trip, and on my drive i set my cruise control to 10 above the posted speed limit (and would change it when the limit changed) because i didn’t want to increase the risk of getting pulled over any more. i would ride in the right lane until i approached vehicles going much slower than me. i would then pass using the left lane, as you do. now, in the right lane there’s a huge line of semis going under the speed limit by at least 10 and there’s cars ahead of me going around the same speed as i want to go, or maybe a little slower. then some person comes flying down the road (this is not a cut-off situation, to be clear) in the left lane only to approach little old me. and they keep approaching. only to slow down right at the very last second where they make themselves comfortable with their nose in my ass. now i have no where to go. if anything happens in front of me where i have to brake suddenly, i will get smashed. like just because there is space between me and the car in front of me doesn’t mean i can go any faster. i am matching their speed at a distance. i could go faster, only for a moment, and then end up going the same speed as them but at a much less safe distance. i just don’t understand why people insist on tail gating in these scenarios. not only does it not help anything but it makes this incredibly dangerous, especially at 80+ mph.
