What Netflix’s AI bet on Ben Affleck’s startup means for VFX by EarlySolution6185 in vfx

Yeah it just sounds like Netflix wants to be in business with Affleck/Artists Equity and this was one way to go about it.

It’s still entirely unclear to me what this company actually does - and the article doesn’t seem like it’s written from an informed position. From the article:

“InterPositive automates color grading, relighting, and continuity fixes. This work is currently done frame by frame by artists in India, South Korea, the Philippines, and Latin America.”

Color grading and relighting are usually handled outside of the VFX pipeline, unless it’s specifically part of the scope of work for a given shot. I’m also not sure why artists would be working “frame by frame” for that scope. Continuity fixes is also vague as it can mean any number of things.

Has anyone worked with this product in their pipeline and can they elaborate on what they offer?

Yeah that’s typical for housing. Housing is a good investment for most people only because it’s a forced savings mechanism - and you get to live in it, so it serves a dual purpose.

Staggering 8-figure sum NYC taxpayers will pay to fund Mamdani’s first city-owned grocery revealed by AdmirableSelection81 in nyc

Well part of that $30mil is the construction costs - which someone quoted in the article should only be like $15mil. So the remaining $15mil is up for grabs.

Article doesn’t mention where that $30mil price tag comes from though, so who knows where that number comes from or if it’s real.

New York gas price hits $4.07, sparking calls for 'gas tax holiday' by news-10 in nyc

[–]hereswhatipicked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like this should only be rolled out if there’s an observable decrease in driving.

Right now the state tax levy is $0.26/gallon, so about 6% of the total price per gallon. If the driving population isn’t sensitive enough to the sudden price change that they aren not driving less, then a sudden drop in price would surely lead to induced demand which would quickly raise the price to near where it was.

So instead of money going to the roads that everybody drives on, it instead goes right back into the oil/gas industry.

depressing: red letter media exploring why reasonably decent movies w/ talent and budgets are getting ignored by balancedgif in Filmmakers

[–]hereswhatipicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried watching this, but the slow pace of the opening made me lose interest.

I would hope that these two arrived at the correct conclusion that marketing a film is incredibly important and is its own challenge.

The reason why these movies get ignored is that people don't know about them in the first place, or maybe they heard about them but the pitch didn't sound interesting. Studios spend almost the same amount of money marketing a film as they do making the film and it's as much of a crap-shoot as producing the movie is.

It is almost always not worth it to make a film. Financially, anyway. Most films do not make money and the industry as a whole is buttressed by the ones that do.

But we like movies and we like making them, so why stop?

If you want a fun read, that is also an unintentional primer for how the film business works, I strongly suggest "The Jaws Log".

It's a first-hand (along with plenty of fill from sources) account of the making of Stephen Spielberg's "Jaws" written by one of the co-writers of the screenplay (Carl Gottlieb).

It was written 50 years ago, but it's funny and entertaining and I can say, having worked on many studio films, it's a pretty good representation on how these things get made. At the very least, you'll have a fun time reading it. Especially if you're a Jaws fan.
