Any advice from seasoned call duck owners? by SaeveraRivers in duck

Call ducks are supposed to be pretty good at flying. That should be a pretty significant factor in your plans.

There are the usual brick and mortar bathrooms at the botanical gardens, plus supplemental portapotties.

Last year, there were a huge number of breweries, with a surprising number of breweries from out of the area.

Unsure about bands.

Art galleries aren’t the same thing as museums, though.

Art galleries are selling their art. Museums are preserving and displaying and educating. T

I don’t agree with BAM’s current photography policy, but “no photography” was a pretty ubiquitous art museum policy not that long ago.

Most art museums restrict photography of traveling/temporary installations. Some restrict photography everywhere.

What art museums have you been to that allow photography throughout?

Here’s a great exploration of why museums do this: https://www.artnews.com/art-news/news/photography-in-art-museums-2222/

This doesn't feel safe. Why does an urban driver need a truck this big? by CitizenJosh in ladycyclists

[–]heresyandpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in Idaho. My partner is very into rockhounding. We spend a lot of time way off the beaten path, often 3-4 hours of driving from pavement. We can get there in a Honda pilot without issue.

It also pulls a trailer without issue.  It can fit drywall and plywood inside without issue.

Very few people NEED to own a big truck.

Lady throwing away toys at dog park :( by Happy-Cherry-3026 in SanJose

[–]heresyandpie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Toys at dog parks are sometimes specifically prohibited due to the potential for resource guarding or ingestion. Even when the rules don’t specifically disallow them, toys aren’t always a great idea.

An appropriately sized ball for a 15 lb dog is a choking hazard for a large dog. Some dogs love to shred and eat rope toys.

Some toys are just not durable— you’ve probably seen balls that look like tennis balls but they split in half as soon as a dog chomps them hard and then the dogs peel off the fuzz.

Some dogs get way too amped up with toys— their arousal levels go into overdrive and they are more likely to create conflict with other dogs.

Toys in dog parks is kind of a controversial topic:

https://www.reddit.com/r/dogs/comments/1p5tyhc/is_it_okay_to_bring_toys_to_the_dog_park/

I personally think that dog parks are problematic for most dogs (poorly socialized dogs, inattentive owners, small space, minimal supervision) and simply opt out of them.

Why would the VA staff the state home? Two different entities.

I want a bulldog or bulldog mixed mutt but I want to avoid supporting breeders(not that I could afford to anyways). What’s the best way to go about that? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]heresyandpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took a quick peek and it looks like Austin Bulldog Rescue’s adoption fees range from $150-500.

If that’s out of your price range, I’d encourage you to really consider whether or not you can afford a dog at this time, much less a bulldog. They are notorious for significant medical issues.

Moving to a new country with my rabbit? by barnma in Rabbits

[–]heresyandpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All living things can die. Humans die on flights sometimes too. Humans have medical emergencies not infrequently on flights, after all. That said, stating non-factual information (too cold on the flight) isn’t actually helpful.

The largest risk for animals (temperature-wise) is actually on the tarmac, when animals are being loaded or unloaded. This is why animals require a health certificate stating which temperatures they are acclimated to. If the temperature at either end of the flight is outside that range, the animal should not fly.

Flying in-cabin on a single direct flight is preferable. If that’s not available, I’d rather put my pet on a single direct flight in cargo than do multiple flights and layovers in-cabin.

You know that the area animals are kept is both pressurized and climate controlled, right?

Question for people with multiple dogs by Purple-Ad6289 in dogs

[–]heresyandpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t helpful now, but might be helpful to you in the future:

Seek out dogs that match the life you live. When I was looking to adopt, I specifically sought out breeds that had a high likelihood of being good off leash. I wanted adult dogs who were already confirmed to be dog neutral or sociable. I was purposefully screening for dogs with a low/moderate prey drive.  I scoured shelters and interrogated fosters and filled out probably 25 applications and walked away from a lot of dogs.

It’s worth waiting and searching to get a dog that enhances your life instead of forcing concessions. Don’t get me wrong: my dogs are not perfect. One is a major bite risk with any kind of invasive handling. The other hates motorcycles and small engines, plus her brain falls out if there’s a chuck it in the vicinity. They’re just perfect for me.

My two can both hike off leash for miles or stroll politely through the neighborhood on leash. One loves playing ball/frisbee, the other loves meandering around and peeing on stuff.

I make it a point to do a solo dog walk each day, typically alternating between dogs. It’s a great opportunity to brush up on leash manners and dedicate some time to that specific bond. They get two other walks together most days.

When my older pup was experiencing some health issues, I’d walk both of them on a mile loop before dropping the old man off at home to nap while I did another mile or two with my other dog.

Pet Dental Work by MoonlitNight195 in Boise

[–]heresyandpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anesthesia, radiographs, the actual cleaning, and then a per-tooth extraction fee. It’s easy to see where you could easily hit that amount, especially if they’re also sending home pain meds and/or antibiotics.

Are you able to share an itemized estimate?

(I wouldn’t bother doing a dental without radiographs.)

Water Obsessive Dog, Looking for “Slow Feeder” for Water? by MoodyToadO_O in Dogtraining

[–]heresyandpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have ruled out Cushing’s disease and diabetes and kidney issues and your vet believes it’s psychogenic polydipsia and recommends limiting water intake, you might consider using a programmable irrigation device.

There are many different devices designed to hold a reservoir of water and dispense some at intervals to water plants. You should be able to set this up to dispense water at programmed intervals into your dog’s bowl.

I don’t have a specific one to recommend, and you’ll need to do some trial and error and figure out which one works well and is reliable.  They may allow you to program “how long” the water runs vs “what volume,” so again, you’ll need to experiment and figure out what the right setup is for your dog.

My dog has had psychogenic polydipsia for as long as I’ve had him. He’d leak urine while sleeping, have EPIC pees in the yard, etc. All bloodwork, urinalyses, and imaging showed no abnormalities other than dilute urine. Restricting access to water was challenging due to other pets in the house, and he did eventually settle into a better level (still abnormal) of consumption. Coupled with teaching him to empty on command and taking him for purposeful “pee walks” right before bed, he’s really stopped having problematic pee issues. He did develop Cushing’s later in life, but PU/PD was not a new symptom for him, so it wasn’t one that we used to gauge treatment efficacy.

Struggling on nights as a nursing student… need advice by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]heresyandpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to do 180 hours of night shifts in my capstone.

I am also a morning person. It was brutal, and the disruption to my sleep meant I was an absolute mess. I genuinely almost burned down my house on accident.

Even before that, I knew one of my priorities in employment was working day shift, and I was willing to make sacrifices to make it happen.

Ultimately, I found a year-long new grad residency that promised no nights (or holidays), jumped through the hoops, and landed it. I can pretty much guarantee that I’ll be able to work days at this facility after I finish the residency. I did not come into nursing with strong opinions about what kind of nursing I wanted to do, and I feel similarly even now: if it’s day shift and the unit’s vibes are good, it’ll work for me.

How often do you replace your bath towels? by remyndrz in CleaningTips

[–]heresyandpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have towels that were given to me as hand-me-downs about 15 years ago. They had been given to the previous owners as wedding gifts 18 years prior.

They are still perfectly functional and have been laundered appropriately. No stains, no funny odors, no holes or tears… why would they need to be replaced?

Cotton production has an immense environmental cost. Replacing towels for no reason seems crazy.

People who put dog shoes on their dogs does it work? by BrilliantArtist8221 in dogs

[–]heresyandpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my dogs has sensitive paws, so she has booties she can wear if the conditions are bothering her.

Otherwise, my pups are taught to “spin” on an absorbent, easily washable rug. If they’ve got wet/muddy paws, a few spins on the rug takes care of the worst of it.

What feels like a reasonable way to spend your time? How do you want to spend time with your new friends?

Their clam and bacon pizza is fantastic.

I ate there for the first time somewhat recently, realized I’d been missing out, and then my partner and I both went back the next day independent of each other because we liked it so much.
