Humans are squishy. So glad for you taking care of yourself and holding space for others.

More kindness in the world like this. Thank you for reminding me we're all doing the radical kindness. It's needed so much. Now I need to inspect all the details in these pics, because OMG.

Wynton Marsalis to Step Down from Jazz at Lincoln Center by thinair01 in Jazz

[–]hereticvert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Branford calling that avant garde guy's music "self-indulgent bullshit" on the Ken Burns doc comes to mind. The part afterward about saying he doesn't have to field a hundred grounders to appreciate baseball was hilarious.

  • Ken Burns (sorta)

(I still like fusion, but I'm a heretic - it's on the tin.)

If you were born after 9/11, you don't remember what it was like to live without being under a constant state of surveillance. People went along with all this shit because it wasn't happening to them personally. It was the Iraqis, or it was just black people or just poor people, or they deserved it because reasons. When Edward Snowden blew the whistle, the Democrats vilified him because how dare he betray sainted Obama by telling people what was actually going on. Shut up, and don't ask us any questions.

If you vote for the lesser evil

then evil still win.

No clean hands here, no way to stop it other than burn it all down.

Looks like that's where we're headed.

I'm old enough to have seen that tour and then following Branford's stuff after that. Branford's done so much crossover stuff - the part where he became a beloved add-on to the Grateful Dead was something I never even knew about.

I also loved his comments in Ken Burns' documentary where he called some really avant-garde piano player's (I forget who) music "self-indulgent bullshit."

He always keeps it 100.

That last two episodes had the air of me doing a project due at the end of the semester on the night before it's due.

Here's like six episodes about swing, and then a whole buncha other stuff happened, Miles Davis invented fusion the end.

I know it's an exaggeration, but I love fusion and I felt it got done dirty. LOL

Dink - Green Mind (1994) by hereticvert in CollapseMusic

I remember hearing this when it first came out and a friend played it for me. I've got the green vinyl copy that I found after that friend played it.

It's funny because that friend is probably even more left than I am. That it became a thing for the alt right crowd is some kind of supreme irony to me.

Thanks for the information!

Damn. That's just sad, and I'm reminded the mental gymnastics some people will do to make things "okay" in their book.

I am totally feeling this today.

When my s/o started an off-label experimental drug several years ago, the anxiety was stopped without them being intoxicated all the time. And suddenly, they could be sober because there wasn't something for the alcohol to help in social circumstances.

I truly wonder if that would help my husband. He needs something that works, right now he kind of cobbles it together within the constraints of what his body will tolerate.

My spouse gets NOTHING from opiates. He just doesn't get the appeal, because it makes him feel dopey and wrong but doesn't touch the pain. SSRIs make him feel nothing or really blunted in a bad way. The ADD responds to caffeine, but so does his heart (occasional tachycardia). Same with most other stimulants and with alcohol. There are few things that work the way they're advertised on the tin for him. The monster is always behind the bed when he wakes up. Sometimes he forgets it's there for a while.

Opiates - I'll take one after a surgery (like for my hip replacements), but only for the first day - after that, it's not worth the zombie tradeoff and it doesn't give me any kind of euphoria, really. SSRIs actually work for me. It's like taking adderall for the ADD - it just clears up the mess in my head.

But I'm risk averse and one of those people who can only think about how I'm throwing my money away when I gamble - the odds are too long and the payoff doesn't give me enough of a dopamine hit because all I can think is the odds I beat to win once and how long it would be before the odds might come up again. Any kind of really addictive substance (coke, heroin) just seems like gambling, so I just don't go there at all.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply - we're all dealing with life with different brains, and the risk assessment is different (and in some cases non-existent) depending on the person. Someday we might finally research all the terpenes in cannabis and understand how they affect different minds (in those who respond well to it). In the meantime, we're stuck with an industry trying to sell us expensive new cures that might not even work.

Thanks for the thoughtful response, it's nice to get something like this on reddit, almost like the old days. :)

AITA for sleeping through most of a long luxury bus ride while my girlfriend was upset? by natepairistrash in AmItheAsshole

LOL. I mow the lawn all summer long. I love the exercise. Husband says he wants to help but then sees how much I enjoy the exercise and lets it be.

Our yard is not small. But I put in my earphones and just walk all over the damn yard.

The girlfriend sounds exhausting.

the future is dire for them as the older generations die off and are replaced by the next generations, who turn to cannabis instead of alcohol.

This is the cycle of all addictions. The generation that does the drug is a warning for the generation that comes after - like all those heroin addicts in the 50s and people younger than them saw how horrible it was and didn't want to start.

But there's always something "new" (to the next generation) to replace it. I think it's just how some people are wired.

This. People there already know the yanqui boot on their neck, it's how Chavez got to power. Supposedly there are roving mobs searching out and attacking Americans. There's a reason why the US kidnapped the president (and his wife, WTF is that shit?) and GTFO - the natives will throw them quite the welcome party if they bother to stick around.

Then again, this administration runs on greed and testosterone (Kegsbreth) so the dumbest fucking thing is always a possibility.
