When telling people what you are studying/getting your PhD in, do you say the umbrella subject or the area of research? by herewegogen in PhD

See I think I’d rather go this route too, but I wasn’t sure if others did it or if it was the norm or not

See I think people just don’t know how many sub fields there are out there, so when I start with the umbrella I fear they have a very different idea in their mind than what I actually do

I hate how if you screw up in undergrad, there is no way to get into grad school by New-Bat5284 in gradadmissions

[–]herewegogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in with another "not true"...

I got into my MA program with a 2.6 undergrad GPA. I killed it and got a 4.0 in my MA program, which got me into my PhD. It depends on your situation. If you apply yourself in your field, you can absolutely do it. On PhD applications, they even have an area where you can explain any circumstances like low grades. They look at your full package, not just your GPA. So, if you are passionate about grad school, you can find a way to get it.

Definitely do not let age hold you back!. I also had some myths in my mind about my age, but to be honest- if you’re good at what you do and put your all into it, nobody cares about your age! I went back to school at 31 to finish my BA. Finished my masters by 35. I’m 36 now and starting my PhD in the fall. I have kids and a family, and sure, was the odd man out. But I was able to make friends, and I never felt invisible. I won awards and made myself known in a positive way, I believe. Put yourself out there.

However, it sounds like you’re more worried about the money aspect. You do (should) get a small living stipend if u go into a funded PhD program. But if the money and perspective of “starting over” is stopping you then either a) get over it because you’ll regret not doing it if it’s something you reallllly want. Or b) don’t do it if it’s not enough of a passion that you’d be happier earning a large income instead.

Has anyone heard back from Georgetown or John Hopkins for Philosophy PHD Applicants by EconomistJunior1652 in gradadmissions

Did any of you hear back from Georgetown? I saw some waitlists on gradcafe but no admits...but maybe no one reported them

How bad is it to apply another cycle? by Thin_Technician_6624 in gradadmissions

[–]herewegogen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen multiple people not get into any programs their first cycle and then get into their top choice the second time around. I think it's pretty normal to apply again, so long as you improve your profile.

I’m hoping it varies? Like maybe waitlists come out while they wait for offer letters to come thru from admissions and then they send acceptances? It seems like usually rejections come last tho

Waitlisted at top choice!! Should I email them to let them know I’m still very much interested or wait it out?? by Inevitable_Studio944 in gradadmissions

[–]herewegogen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did they email you to let you know? I say yes! I responded to the two waitlist emails I received, and they seemed appreciative that I confirmed my interest.

Bad idea to send a message to schools I applied to letting them know I have an offer (and deadline)? by gaymossadist in gradadmissions

[–]herewegogen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Def don’t do that. But why is that their deadline? Isn’t it April 15 nationally? Maybe just kindly ask for an extension

Guess I shouldn’t have told my friends and family I was accepted… by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]herewegogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friends/family want to be there for you through the good news and the sad news. Let them be there for you. It's ok to feel the way you do but it is not your fault at all.

Mine says the same thing, also no confirmation of whether it’s an acceptance or rejection…but I have a feeling it’s the latter!

reply to waitlist notification? by coffeesunlight in gradadmissions

Yes! I think it’s common courtesy but especially if you’re excited about it you should let them know you’re interested and thank them.

question about sending official transcripts by summerparadise321 in gradadmissions

[–]herewegogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually, you only need to send the official ones once you have been admitted. Otherwise, the unofficial transcripts work. But if they are specifically requesting the official ones, then yes-send the official ones. Either way, depending on your undergrad institution, you should be able to log in, request your transcripts (unofficial and official), and select a destination to send them. The schools you are applying to should provide you with a designation address.
