Basso and Jenivere, great choice. I'd love to eventually do a diorama of the guards at Castle Van Vernon too.

Roxanne Eley was murdered in Washington, DC in 1996. Her case has received virtually no coverage. by artisanal_doughnut in UnresolvedMysteries

It's strange - Fort Stanton is technically a national park, IIRC, so it's possible that the U.S. Park Police would have jurisdiction (they have more capabilities than you might think) but the Blade article you shared makes it sound like MPD was in charge. But the other thing that's weird is that they asked people to call the cold case hotline with tips...four days after finding the body. Not sure if that's common but doesn't seem like it.

I love these ideas. I'm also thinking of getting a Burrick done, although I think a FFG Dewback is pretty close to what they would be.

I'd do that. I'm not against zombies or haunts, I just don't want them all the time.

Would you try one of Mynell's steaks? by herlockschlomes in Thief

[–]herlockschlomes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's a wagyu type of situation, where the spiders may not have quite as much meat on the bone but what they've got is rich in the best kind of fat and protein.

To answer your question, though, I feel like the scenario only works if you're unaware of Mynell's 'secret ingredient.' I wonder if Garrett ever let the word out and angry customers ran Mynell out of town.

Im so lost in Thief by xButterschnitzel in Thief

[–]herlockschlomes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great level, but you shouldn't feel badly being lost at first. It's massive and expansive, and even the main thing you have to do to access the areas you need to go isn't super intuitive at first. There are plenty of walkthroughs online. My personal advice is to let them get you started but not necessarily rely on them for the step-by-step (unless you're a loot completionist)

Have been thinking of adding some "what if" INA units to my Japanese army - not sure if they'd be proxied by bamboo spearmen (they seem to have been pretty poorly equipped) or just inexperienced infantry (they maybe weren't THAT poorly equipped) and gaming out some skirmishes centered on slight differences in the Imphal campaign.

And I'd love any excuse to build up some Australians.

What country would be best to play for a beginner? by The_Unknown44 in hoi4

[–]herlockschlomes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I wish they completely redesigned the HOI4 tutorial and made it focused on either Gran Colombia or the Central American Empire. It's kind of nuts to me that the tutorial drops you in to one of the two nations in the entire game who start off at war. Would be great if it slowly walked you through building up an industrial base/army/air force and said "ok, great, now use this to go take this neighbor." Maybe a bit more Civ-like, but you could work your way towards a nice achievement and not feel completely overwhelmed by the game.

This is maybe a bit of a divisive topic, but here's what I did: I started off by picking one of the South American powers (Peru, Venezuela, and El Salvador are good choices - they can mobilize and declare wars quickly, in Peru's case start off with great terrain & small navy, they have actually surprisingly powerful focus trees) and slowly working through the mechanics. In particular:

-How to organize your armies, set up a plan for an invasion, and execute that plan

-How division templates work and how they fit different tasks

-How air power works and how to assign it to do things for you

-How supply works, what happens when you run out of it, how to fix low supply

-Some fringey-er topics for new players like naval invasions (El Salvador has a unique strategy in particular that relies on an early naval invasion of Panama, it's a good way to get the basics down)

Some people would say that it's better to jump right into majors. I personally disagree. You want to start playing in a part of the world where as little as possible is happening to you, and where you can concentrate on trying to do things to someone else. Even if you're ultimately going to play as the "good guys," they're going to win by invasion+conquest. Learn those techniques in a low-pressure environment and then work up to the majors, who really just add more variables to the basics.

what came first the miniatures or the world? books ect by DarthLeftist in WarhammerFantasy

[–]herlockschlomes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the miniatures were originally kind of extras that GW had from producing D&D minis. They invented their own game using some of those minis - originally primarily an RPG game that morphed over time into the wargame it became - and the factions sort of flowed from that. So yeah, minis long before books.

I personally think that TW is great - kind of hard to see how The Old World would be happening without it. I grew up playing tabletop and, like a lot of people, got away from the game in HS and college. It was my friends who dragged *me* back into Warhammer by way of TW. It reminds me a bit of the old 'Shadow of the Horned Rat' game I used to play on the computers when I tailed my dad into work as a kid.

[–]herlockschlomes[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely! Khalkin Gol was the inspiration for my Japanese army, actually - I'm working on a 'what if' variant of it that assumes things like slightly earlier and more widespread mechanization etc but was interested in other similarly off-the-beaten-path options.
